CVIA brightness is a projector light-output rating associated with China Video Industry Association standard T/CVIA 114-2023. ANSI lumens are another brightness label, but the two figures come from different measurement contexts. There is no authoritative universal conversion established here, so do not convert one into the other with a fixed multiplier.
What does CVIA brightness mean?
CVIA brightness refers to projector light output measured in connection with the China Video Industry Association’s T/CVIA 114-2023 standard. Standards indexes describe that document as covering light-output requirements and test methods for fixed-resolution electronic projectors using LCD, LCoS, or DLP projection, while excluding laser televisions. The standard’s full text is not available in the sources cited here, so those scope details are reported by the indexes rather than confirmed from the standard itself (standards index; standards index).

The label is useful because it indicates a measurement basis rather than an unqualified “lumens” figure. However, the CVIA name alone does not tell buyers every condition or procedure used to produce a particular product’s rating.

No. Both labels concern projector output, but they should not be treated as interchangeable units or as proof that two products were tested under identical procedures. JBMIA’s explanation of ISO/IEC 21118 (JIS X6911) describes a nine-section approach: illuminance is measured at the center of each section, the readings are averaged, and that average is multiplied by the projection area. JBMIA cautions that brightness values produced by different methods may not be directly comparable (JBMIA explanation).
#1 Best Overall
- Measures luminosity from 0 to 200,000 Lux and ambient temperature
- High accuracy of ±3% rdg ± 8 dgts (10,000 Lux)
- 4 digital color LCD screen, MIN/Max readings, data hold, auto power off, and low battery indication
- Wide range of application, use lux light meter for set design, factory, office or home use
- lightweight and compact, 2 years long period warranty
That description provides context for standardized projector lumen claims; it does not establish a complete, direct comparison of every ANSI and CVIA test detail. BenQ describes CVIA lumens as a nine-zone average similar to ANSI lumens, but that is a manufacturer’s explanation, not a substitute for the full CVIA standard (BenQ’s explanation).
Can you convert CVIA lumens to ANSI lumens?
Do not rely on a fixed conversion unless a manufacturer or credible independent test provides comparable measurements and explains the conditions. A conversion page from Yeoan claims approximately 1 ANSI lumen equals 0.5 CVIA lumen, but the available sources do not establish that as an authoritative or universal ratio (Yeoan conversion page). A number presented without its measurement basis can make unlike ratings look more comparable than they are.

- Exposures accurate down to a tenth-of-a-stop for both ambient and electronic flash light readings in full-stop mode.
- At ISO 100 the ambient EV range is 0 to 19.9 flash f/stops range from f/1.0 to f/90.9 with a shutter-speed span of 60-seconds to 1/8000th-of-a-second (1 sec to 1/500th for flash).
- Photo Mode: for still image photographers featuring shutter or aperture priority display of a full range of ambient and flash functions including cord and cordless flash measurement
- HD Cine Mode: perfect for DSLR and mirrorless videographers who need to take exposure readings and control light using shutter speeds and frame rates
- Cine Mode: designed for use with cinema grade cameras, allows users to select from the most useful frame rates and shutter angles for exposure control with one-tenth stop accuracy.
How should you compare projector brightness ratings?
- Find the stated unit and standard. Check the detailed specification for CVIA, ANSI, or another named method. A bare “lumens” claim may not identify its measurement convention.
- Prefer like-for-like claims. Compare figures using the same stated standard where possible. JBMIA warns that results from differing methods may be unsuitable for direct comparison.
- Check who provides the figure. Note whether it is a manufacturer specification or an independent test, and look for an explanation of operating and image conditions.
- Relate the rating to your setup. Screen size, image conditions, and room lighting affect perceived brightness. The sources cited here do not establish a numerical correction for those factors.
- Ask for comparable evidence when units differ. If one projector lists CVIA and another ANSI, look for measurements made under explained, comparable conditions rather than ranking the products through arithmetic conversion.
What should you take from a CVIA rating?
CVIA identifies a projector-output measurement context associated with T/CVIA 114-2023; it is not a promise that the image will look equally bright in every room or at every projected size. For a meaningful comparison, use the named standard and testing basis, and treat figures from different methods cautiously. The exact method-by-method differences between CVIA and ANSI are not established by the sources cited here.
