MRPL’s share price is influenced by expectations for its refining profitability and risks. The key operating measure is gross refining margin (GRM), but it is only one part of the picture: product crack spreads, inventory gains or losses, throughput, efficiency, crude mix, crude-price volatility and foreign-exchange movements all shape results. These factors help explain the company’s business exposure; they do not, on their own, explain a particular daily share move or predict the stock’s direction.
How refining margins affect MRPL
A refinery processes crude oil into products such as diesel, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and petrol. A product’s crack spread is the difference between its market price and the crude-oil price used as a reference. Cracks vary by product and reflect global supply and demand, including refinery capacity additions and outages.

Cracks are an important input to refining economics, but they are not the same thing as MRPL’s reported GRM. The company’s realized results also depend on the crude grades it processes, product yields and mix, operating efficiency, and the volume refined. CRISIL’s June 2026 rationale attributed MRPL’s FY2025–26 GRM recovery to healthy product cracks as well as high inventory gains amid crude-price volatility. Inventory effects can therefore make reported GRM differ from the underlying market-margin picture. CRISIL Ratings

Crude prices alone do not tell an investor whether MRPL’s margin will improve. A lower crude price can coincide with weak product cracks; rapid price changes can also produce inventory gains or losses and foreign-exchange effects. The sources identify these sensitivities, not a fixed rule linking a particular crude-price move to MRPL’s share price.

What the recent GRM figures show
MRPL’s reported GRM moved substantially across the fiscal years covered by the company and CRISIL:
| Period | Reported GRM | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FY2023–24 | $10.36 per barrel | MRPL FY2024–25 annual report |
| FY2024–25 | $4.45 per barrel | MRPL FY2024–25 annual report |
| FY2025–26 | $9.22 per barrel | CRISIL Ratings, June 2026 |
The FY2024–25 annual report said cracks for high-speed diesel (HSD), ATF and motor spirit (MS, or petrol) fell by 42%, 36% and 33%, respectively, in that fiscal year. MRPL described demand changes and new refinery supply among the factors. The report’s statement was: “The cracks (difference between crude oil & refined product price) of HSD, ATF and MS dropped down by 42%,36% and 33% respectively.” MRPL annual reports

The contrast between FY2024–25 and FY2025–26 illustrates why a single year’s margin should not be treated as a stable run rate. The figures are historical fiscal-year results, and the FY2026 explanation includes inventory gains; they are not a forecast or a direct measure of what the stock should be worth.

A refinery’s unit margin is only part of its earnings potential. Throughput affects how many barrels are processed, while utilization, product yield, fuel and loss, maintenance and shutdowns influence how effectively capacity is used. MRPL’s FY2024–25 annual report recorded crude throughput of 18.18 million metric tonnes and distillate yield of 81.93%. CRISIL reported about 17 million tonnes of throughput at about 113% utilization in FY2025–26.

These operating figures provide context for the margin data: high throughput or utilization can support volumes, but does not insulate a refinery from weak product spreads. MRPL’s annual report also described varied crude processing and new grades that added margin in FY2024–25, illustrating how crude flexibility can affect realized economics.
Crude sourcing, currency and financial risks
CRISIL says around 80% of MRPL’s crude requirement is imported. That exposure makes crude-price volatility and foreign-exchange movements important factors to monitor, alongside working-capital needs. Inventory values can move as crude prices change, while currency fluctuations can affect the rupee cost of imported feedstock and other obligations. The direction and size of the net effect depend on timing and operating conditions; the available figures do not establish a simple one-way relationship.

Profitability has also varied sharply. MRPL reported profit after tax of ₹51 crore in FY2024–25, compared with ₹3,596 crore in FY2023–24. CRISIL reported operating profit before depreciation, interest and tax of approximately ₹6,235 crore in FY2025–26, compared with approximately ₹2,380 crore in FY2024–25. These are different financial measures and should not be compared as if they were the same metric.

It reports that ONGC owns an effective 88.58% stake in MRPL and characterizes the refinery as strategically important to the group. These factors inform a broader assessment of financial risk and support; they do not replace analysis of refining performance.

A practical framework for assessing MRPL
When reviewing a company result or market update, separate the operating evidence from the market reaction. Useful questions include:
- Market margins: What happened to diesel, ATF and petrol cracks, and were supply, demand, capacity additions or outages relevant?
- Reported GRM: Is the figure for a full fiscal year or a shorter period, and does the explanation identify inventory gains or losses?
- Operations: How did throughput, utilization, yields, maintenance and operating efficiency change?
- Feedstock and currency: Did crude mix, sourcing flexibility, crude-price volatility or foreign exchange affect costs and inventories?
- Financial position: What do earnings, working-capital requirements, borrowing and parent-group context add to the operating picture?
Keep definitions and periods aligned when comparing MRPL’s GRM with any market benchmark. A company-reported annual GRM that includes inventory effects is not automatically comparable with a market crack spread or another refinery’s figure.
What these factors can—and cannot—say about the share price
Refining margins and operating results help investors form expectations about MRPL’s earnings, but the available sources do not establish that a specific GRM change caused a particular share-price move. They also do not provide an authoritative current quote, recent return series or valuation multiple. A share price can reflect expectations and risks beyond a single operating indicator, so these figures are best used to understand business sensitivity rather than as a standalone buy, sell or price forecast.
