The disclosure’s examples include controller buttons; it does not establish a mechanism for the player to manually change analog-stick resistance.

The filing’s priority date is September 21, 2023, its PCT filing date is September 11, 2024, and it was published March 27, 2025. The patent page reports the application as pending but cautions that its legal-status information is an assumption, not a legal conclusion. These are distinct concepts: physical button force that can respond to game action, software changes to the values reported by an analog input, and calibration logic for a stick’s resting position. Their shared connection to controller input does not make them evidence of a single manual stick-tension feature.

The adjustable-tension stick patent is assigned to Mattel
US7338374B2, titled “Adjustable tension analog stick for a video game pad,” does describe a mechanism for changing stick resistance. Its record names Mattel Inc. as the original assignee and Michael Hammond and Lee Wing Hang as inventors. It was published March 4, 2008, and is listed as expired. It is not a Sony patent.
What a patent filing does—and does not—show
A published patent application documents a disclosed invention; it does not show that a company has built, announced, or plans to sell a controller with that feature. The records discussed here do not establish a shipping Sony controller with manually adjustable analog-stick resistance. They also do not provide product testing or performance measurements.
