Crypto hash rate is the number of hash calculations a miner or proof-of-work network performs per second. It measures computational throughput—not a coin balance or transaction speed. A miner makes repeated attempts to find a valid result, while a network-level figure estimates the combined rate of that work.
What a hash rate measures
A hash function takes input data and produces a fixed-length digest. In Bitcoin mining, miners repeatedly hash a block header while changing inputs, searching for a digest that meets the network’s current target. The output is unpredictable, so miners cannot know which attempt will succeed; they make many attempts instead. Bitcoin’s developer guide explains the proof-of-work target rule.

Hash rate expresses the pace of those calculations: hashes per second. Bitcoin.org describes it as the measuring unit of the Bitcoin network’s processing power in its Bitcoin vocabulary.
What TH/s, PH/s and EH/s mean
Because mining involves enormous numbers of calculations, hash rate is commonly expressed with metric prefixes. Each step in this scale is 1,000 times the previous one:

The same units can describe one mining device or a whole network. A device’s rate refers to its own processing capacity; a network’s aggregate rate is an estimate inferred from mining activity and protocol data, not a direct count of every machine.
Hash rate and difficulty are different
Hash rate is how quickly miners try hashes. Difficulty describes how challenging the target is relative to a baseline. A lower Bitcoin target makes a qualifying hash less likely, so miners need more attempts on average to find a block. Bitcoin’s developer documentation describes this relationship.

When more hashing capacity joins Bitcoin, blocks may arrive faster at first. The protocol adjusts difficulty using the time taken to produce the previous 2,016 blocks, with a target interval of 1,209,600 seconds—two weeks. The adjustment is intended to bring the average block pace back toward its target; Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes the intended average as about ten minutes per block. These are Bitcoin parameters and should not be assumed to apply to every cryptocurrency.
What hash rate does—and does not—tell you
Hash rate helps describe the computational work being applied to a proof-of-work network. On its own, however, it does not establish any of the following:

- Mining profitability: This also depends on hardware efficiency, electricity cost, rewards, fees, coin price and network difficulty.
- Energy use: A hash-rate figure does not state how much electricity the hardware consumes; device efficiency and the power source matter.
- Decentralization: A large aggregate rate does not show how mining power is distributed among participants.
- Security against every attack: Security depends on the network’s rules, the distribution of mining power and the attacker model, among other factors.
Bitcoin mining is competitive, and Bitcoin.org’s FAQ says specialized hardware is the cost-effective approach for Bitcoin mining today. That market condition can change, and the point does not establish that any specific machine will be profitable.

Before treating a published network rate as a current fact, check which network it refers to, when it was measured and how the estimate was produced. Network estimates are inferred from observed mining activity and protocol data; a machine’s advertised rate, by contrast, is a device-level figure. The sources cited here do not prescribe one estimator for network hash rate.

Hash algorithms, practical units, block schedules and difficulty rules can differ among proof-of-work networks. Bitcoin’s target and adjustment mechanism are a useful example, not a universal crypto rule.
