When Power, volume and navigation respond normally, troubleshoot the TV’s network, voice setup, microphone controls and surroundings before replacing the remote. If other buttons fail too, check the remote’s power, reset and pairing. Steps vary by remote and TV model.
First, tell whether the fault is voice-only
Try Power, volume and navigation. If those work but voice commands do not, focus on the TV’s connection and voice-recognition setup. If several buttons are unresponsive or slow, include remote power and pairing in the checks.

Check the TV’s voice setup
- Check the internet connection. Confirm the TV is online and its network connection is stable. Samsung says voice recognition may depend on a connection to Bixby servers. See Samsung’s voice-recognition troubleshooting.
- Confirm the assistant and voice recognition are configured. Check the settings for your TV model and make sure the intended assistant is available and set up. Language, account and model support can affect which voice features work.
- Check for a TV microphone switch, if your model has one. Make sure it is enabled. Not every Samsung TV has a physical microphone switch, and its location varies.
- Reduce background noise and speak clearly. Move closer to the remote and hold its voice button while speaking, if that is how your remote operates.
- Check for a TV software update. Menu names and available options differ across models. Use the TV’s manual or Samsung support page for the exact model if these settings do not match your screen.
Samsung’s older guidance also identifies network setup, Smart Hub terms, disabled voice recognition, background noise and speech that is too quiet as possible causes. Treat it as general context rather than a current menu guide: Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s voice-recognition guidance.

Check remote power, reset and pairing
Battery-powered remotes
Install fresh batteries of the correct type and orientation. Samsung US’s reset procedure is to remove the batteries, hold Power for eight seconds, reinstall the batteries and test the remote. Samsung Canada also advises removing and reinserting batteries for pairing issues and notes that weak batteries can cause intermittent response. Solar or rechargeable remotes
Do not assume these remotes take replaceable batteries. For a solar remote used with a 2021-or-newer TV, Samsung US specifies holding Return and Enter—the center of the navigation pad—for ten seconds, then pairing the remote again. Check your model’s instructions before using this sequence.
Pair the remote again
Samsung’s regional pairing instructions differ. The US procedure says to hold Return and Play/Pause together at close range for at least five seconds; the Canadian procedure says at least three seconds. Use the instructions for your remote and region, and wait for the TV’s on-screen connection message rather than treating either duration as universal.

Use the camera test only for the Power button’s IR signal
Samsung US suggests pointing the remote’s Power button at a digital camera or phone or tablet camera, then holding the button while watching the camera screen. A visible colored light indicates an infrared (IR) signal. If no light appears, try fresh batteries and repeat the test; Samsung advises replacing the remote if the signal is still absent.

This test checks the Power button’s IR signal only. It does not test whether the remote microphone can hear you or whether the TV’s voice-recognition setup is working.

When to replace the remote or contact Samsung
If the reset and model-appropriate pairing steps do not help, look up the TV’s full model number and verify that a replacement remote supports voice and is compatible with that set. Samsung says remote designs and functions vary; do not choose a replacement based only on appearance. Samsung Canada provides model-based remote lookup through its regional parts channel, and Samsung US advises contacting support if a Smart Remote still will not pair after the prescribed steps.
A universal IR remote may restore basic control, but it may not provide voice control or all Smart Remote functions. It is a fallback for basic operation, not an equivalent replacement for a voice-enabled remote.

Use the TV while troubleshooting
If the TV is already set up or you can approve the connection, Samsung Canada says the SmartThings app can provide a virtual remote on your phone. The TV’s own buttons may also provide basic control. Neither option repairs the remote microphone.
