“Cable TV killer” is an informal label for a service, platform, or device seen as able to replace or disrupt a conventional cable TV subscription. It is a metaphor, not a formal technology category—and it can describe very different things, from on-demand video to live-channel bundles.

What the phrase means

The word “killer” is figurative: it suggests that an alternative could make cable less necessary or challenge its role in watching television. The phrase does not identify one specific product, service, or technical standard, and there is no single official definition.

Its meaning depends on what is being discussed. A streaming subscription, a broad online video platform, a live-TV service, and a device that brings internet video to a television may all be described this way, even though they do different things.

Why it can refer to different kinds of alternatives

On-demand streaming services

On-demand services offer a catalog of shows and films to watch when you choose. They may replace some viewing that a household once got through cable, but an on-demand catalog is not the same as a cable lineup of live channels.

Video platforms

A broad video platform can be called a cable alternative because people watch video there, but that does not make it equivalent to a channel-based TV subscription. A March 26, 2026, B.C. Catholic column used “cable TV killer” for YouTube while distinguishing the general video platform from YouTube TV, which it described as a channel-based subscription service. This is an example of the phrase’s journalistic use, not an authoritative ranking of services.

Live-TV subscriptions and streaming devices

A live-TV streaming subscription may offer selected channels over an internet connection. A streaming media player, by contrast, is a physical device used to access internet video on a television; the device itself does not determine which channels or subscriptions are available.

That distinction is visible in a historical example: in a November 16, 2009, article titled “Is Sezmi a Cable TV Killer?”, Harry McCracken described Sezmi as combining broadcast stations, cable channels, internet content, and a set-top box. The article also mentioned Roku devices for internet video, while noting that their channel offerings were not identical to Sezmi’s. The example illustrates how broadly the label has been used; it does not establish current product features or make a present-day recommendation.

Does the phrase mean cable has been replaced?

No. The phrase expresses a possibility or claim about disruption; it does not prove that cable is obsolete or that a particular service fully replaces it. A useful alternative depends on what someone wants to watch, including whether they need live channels, local news, sports, or particular programs.

U.S. survey data show both widespread streaming and continued overlap with cable. In a survey of 9,397 U.S. adults conducted by Pew Research Center from April 14 to 20, 2025, 83% said they watched streaming services, while 36% said they currently subscribed to cable or satellite TV at home. Pew reported that 28% both subscribed to cable or satellite and watched streaming, while 55% watched streaming without a cable or satellite subscription. These self-reported figures describe service use; they do not show that streaming caused cable’s decline or that one service can replace every household’s cable lineup. Pew Research Center’s July 1, 2025 report also said 72% of U.S. adults said they ever watched Netflix and 67% said they ever watched Amazon Prime Video.

No. “Cable TV killer” is an informal expression, and its first use is not established here. It appears in coverage across different eras and can be applied to different kinds of video services or devices, so it should not be treated as the name of a defined market category.
