What Does Announce Notifications Mean on iPhone? How to Turn It Off

Announce Notifications lets Siri read incoming app alerts aloud. Here’s how to switch it off for all apps or just selected ones—and what the setting does not change.

Announce Notifications is an iPhone setting that lets Siri read incoming app notifications aloud, including through compatible headphones. To stop all spoken notifications, go to Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Announce Notifications, then turn the main switch off. If that route is missing, check Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications or search Settings for the feature’s name.

What Announce Notifications means

When Announce Notifications is on, Siri can speak incoming notifications from apps. Apple lists Messages and Reminders, and supported third-party apps can also use the feature. Depending on the app and its options, you may be able to have Siri announce every notification or only selected types, such as time-sensitive alerts or direct messages. In supported apps, you can also reply to some announced messages by speaking to Siri.

For headphone announcements, Apple says you need compatible headphones paired with an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later. The headphones must be worn, and the device must be locked. Some notifications that an app classifies as time-sensitive or direct messages may be announced automatically.

How to turn off Announce Notifications

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Tap Announce Notifications.
  4. Turn off the main Announce Notifications switch.

Apple also documents a route through Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications. iOS menu labels and locations can vary. If you do not see either route, search for “Announce Notifications” in Settings.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Turn off announcements for one app instead

If you want Siri to keep announcing some apps but not others, open the app’s entry in Announce Notifications and turn off its control. Where the app provides notification-category options, you can choose a narrower set rather than disabling announcements for that app entirely.

If you have added the Announce Notifications control to Control Center, Apple says you can use it there to toggle the feature. This is useful when you want to change the setting temporarily without navigating through Settings.

Why Siri may still announce notifications

  • Another app is still enabled: Turning off announcements for one app does not turn off the master setting or other apps’ controls. Check the app list under Announce Notifications.
  • Speaker announcements are enabled: Apple documents a separate setting at Settings > Accessibility > Siri > Announce Notifications on Speaker. Check it if Siri is speaking notifications through the iPhone speaker.
  • The Control Center control changed the setting: If you use an Announce Notifications button in Control Center, check whether it is on.

Announce Notifications is not the same as turning off app notifications

Announce Notifications controls Siri’s spoken announcements. Turning it off does not, by itself, disable that app’s banners, sounds, or other notifications. To stop an app’s notifications altogether, go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and turn off Allow Notifications. Apple documents that as a separate control.

Announce Notifications versus Announce Calls

Announce Notifications is for incoming app notifications. Announce Calls identifies incoming phone or FaceTime calls. Changing the notification-announcement setting does not turn off call announcements.
