A stranger may be able to connect your name to contact details, past addresses, relatives, work history, property, or public records through search results and people-search sites. A quick audit can show what is exposed and where to request removal. The key distinction: deleting information from its original website is different from asking Google to stop showing that page in Search.
What can a stranger find about you online?
People-search sites, a type of data broker, can combine information from other brokers, public-facing social profiles, and federal, state, and local public records. Their reports may connect a person with current or former addresses, relatives, employment history, property, and civil or criminal records, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

What appears depends on the person and the sources available. A search result is a lead to investigate, not proof that every detail is current or accurate.

How to check what is exposed
- Search your name in more than one search engine. Try your full name, then add a middle name or initial, a common nickname, current or former city, employer, or profession. If your name is common, extra context helps separate your results from someone else’s. The Center for Internet Security’s online-presence guide recommends checking multiple engines because results can differ.
- Search contact details selectively. Try your phone number, email address, or home address if you are comfortable doing so. Keep queries private and avoid posting personal details publicly while checking.
- Check people-search sites. Look for your name and, where their search tools allow it, a phone number or address. These sites may show a profile that connects information not obvious from a general name search.
- Record each relevant result. Save the page URL, the detail exposed, and who appears to control the page. This makes it easier to choose the right removal route and confirm what changed.
Choose the removal route based on where the information lives

Request removal from Google Search
Google’s Results about you can monitor matching home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and government ID details. You can enter name variations and multiple contact points and receive notifications about matching results. Some features are rolling out for adults in certain markets, so availability may differ by location.

- Open Google’s Results about you tool and add the name variations and contact details you want monitored.
- Review matches carefully to confirm they refer to you. Submit a removal request for results that qualify under Google’s policies, and use the tool to check request status.
- Contact the website that hosts the page if you want the information removed at its source. Google explains: “When you remove a result that shows your personal info from Google Search, it doesn’t mean that the info is gone from the internet.”
Google may keep pages that it considers to serve the public interest, and its policies may not cover information you control directly. Removing a result from Google does not remove it from other search engines or the source website.
Opt out of people-search sites
For each profile you find, search the site name with “opt out” or “remove my information” if the site’s removal process is hard to locate. Follow the site’s instructions and retain the profile URL and any confirmation for follow-up. The FTC notes that opting out of one people-search site does not erase public records, remove the same information from every other site, or necessarily prevent it appearing in another person’s report. Information can reappear, so check periodically.

Paid removal services are optional. The FTC recommends checking which sites a service covers, whether it provides a report of sites handled, and how often it checks for new or reappearing information. Do not assume a service covers every broker or guarantees permanent removal.

On February 10, 2026, Google announced that Results about you was expanding to monitor government ID numbers. Google said the capability was rolling out in the United States first, with additional regions planned; that announcement does not establish universal availability. Google also reported that over 10 million people had used Results about you. That is Google’s product-use figure, not an independently audited count of successful removals or people who achieved deletion. Details are in Google’s announcement.

Make the cleanup repeatable
- Keep a simple list of the URLs you checked, the exposed detail, the site’s owner, and the request status.
- Revisit broker profiles and important search results periodically; removals may not cover related profiles or prevent information from returning.
- When a result points to a page you do not control, pursue source deletion or correction as well as any eligible Search removal.
