What Documents Banks May Ask for When Reviewing an International Transfer

Banks may ask for identity and beneficiary details, the purpose of an international transfer, or records showing where its funds originated. Requirements vary by bank, route and risk review.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Banks do not use one universal document checklist for international transfers. Depending on the bank, countries, payment route, amount, customer profile and risk review, it may ask you to verify your identity, confirm beneficiary details and explain the payment purpose or where the money came from. If your bank has contacted you, its specific request—not a general online list—determines what to submit.

Which documents might a bank request?

A review can involve several different kinds of information. Identity verification, details needed to route a payment, an explanation of its purpose and evidence showing the source of funds answer different questions; a requirement in one category does not automatically mean the bank needs every document in another.

Identity and customer details

A bank may ask for information or documents to establish who is initiating or receiving a transfer. The acceptable evidence depends on the country and provider. For covered UK payment-service-provider transfers, GOV.UK lists a passport, photocard driving licence or government-issued documents as examples of independent verification evidence. This is a UK regulatory example, not a global identity-document list. GOV.UK’s payer and payee information guidance describes the relevant framework.

In Canada, FINTRAC says financial entities must verify the identity of the person requesting initiation of an international electronic funds transfer (EFT) of CAD 1,000 or more, and the beneficiary receiving such a transfer, subject to the specified rules. This is an identity-verification threshold in Canada; it is not a worldwide threshold for source-of-funds documents. See FINTRAC’s identity-verification guidance.

These examples illustrate why it is important to distinguish a regulatory identity check from a bank’s request for records about a particular transaction. A threshold in one country does not tell you which document a bank in another country will accept, nor does it establish that every transfer above that amount will trigger the same source-of-funds review.

Beneficiary and receiving-bank details

You may need to provide or confirm the beneficiary’s name and account identifier, along with the receiving bank details required for the destination. These can include an account number or IBAN, the bank’s name, a SWIFT/BIC code, and bank or beneficiary addresses. The exact fields depend on the bank and payment corridor; no single form demonstrates that every field is required everywhere.

For example, River City Bank’s outgoing international wire form, updated July 2025, includes fields for beneficiary and bank details. It is an example of one bank’s form, not an industry-wide checklist. Check the spelling of the beneficiary’s name and the account identifier against the recipient’s instructions. Accurate routing details are different from evidence of where the money came from: providing an IBAN or SWIFT/BIC does not, by itself, explain the transaction’s funding.

Purpose of payment

The bank may ask why you are sending the money. A clear explanation might identify a payment for goods or services, a family gift, a property purchase or another actual purpose. River City Bank’s form includes a payment-purpose field and a reference field, but each bank decides what explanation and supporting records it will accept.

For a business payment, an invoice number or account reference can help the bank associate the wire with the relevant transaction. The explanation should describe the real commercial purpose rather than simply repeat a vague label. If the bank asks for supporting records, an invoice, contract or business accounts may be useful depending on the circumstances; the cited guidance does not make any one of them mandatory for every business transfer.

Source of funds for this transfer

Source of funds means where the particular money being used in the transaction originated. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) gives examples such as employment savings, an inheritance, a gift, an asset sale, dividends, investments and pension income. The documents that may support an explanation depend on which source you identify. Examples include:

  • Employment income: payslips or an employment contract, with relevant account statements if they help show the deposits.
  • Sale of an asset: paperwork confirming the sale, such as documents for a property or share sale, and records connecting the proceeds to the transfer funds.
  • Inheritance: estate accounts or other relevant inheritance records.
  • Gift: records that support the explanation and, if relevant, the movement of the gift into the account used for the transfer.
  • Investment or pension income: records supporting the relevant investment returns or pension income, alongside account records where useful.

HMRC’s supervisory handbook defines source of funds as “the origins of the money used in a particular transaction.” That makes the transaction—not just the balance of an account—the focus. A bank statement may show that money is in an account or trace its movement, but it may not explain the activity that generated those funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HMRC distinguishes evidence that money is in an account or passed through it from evidence of the activity that generated it. A statement can help trace funds but may not explain how they were acquired. Its guidance puts the principle plainly: “It is not enough to know the money came from a UK bank account.” For example, if you say the funds came from salary, payslips may help explain salary deposits shown on statements; if you say they came from a sale, sale records may help connect the proceeds to the relevant deposit. These are ways to make an explanation coherent, not guaranteed document combinations or universal bank rules. See HMRC’s definition of source of funds and its guidance on source-of-funds verification.

When choosing what to send, think about whether the records help explain both the claimed origin and how the money relates to this transfer. For instance, account activity may help trace movement, while employment, sale or inheritance records may explain the underlying source. Which documents are relevant depends on the source you describe and the bank’s review; the examples here are not a complete checklist.

Source of wealth is a separate question

Source of wealth concerns how you accumulated your overall assets, rather than where the money for one transfer came from. If broader wealth checks are relevant to a bank’s due diligence and risk assessment, possible evidence can include audited accounts, share registers, property or investment records, estate accounts and employment records. These are examples for circumstances where a broader check is relevant, not routine documents required for every international transfer. HMRC explains the distinction and risk-based context in its Economic Crime Supervision Handbook.

Business payments

For a business transfer, the bank may want to understand both the commercial purpose and how the payment relates to the underlying transaction. An invoice number or account reference can help identify a payment. Depending on the case, an invoice, contract or business accounts may help support the explanation, but the available guidance does not establish that any one of these is required for every business transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might the bank ask for more information?

Financial institutions may use source-of-funds checks as part of ongoing monitoring when they need to assess whether a transaction fits what they know about the customer, the customer’s business and the associated risk. A transfer funded from an account that is not in the customer’s name, or activity that differs from an expected pattern, can lead to additional questions. A larger amount or a particular destination may also be relevant, but there is no universal amount at which every bank must request the same documents. HMRC describes the risk-based approach in its supervision guidance; Wise’s consumer guidance likewise notes that provider, destination and transfer value can affect requirements.

A request does not mean that the bank has decided the transfer is improper. It means the institution is seeking information for its review. A change from an expected pattern, a funding account held by someone else, or a transaction that needs more context can be relevant to that assessment. The cited guidance does not establish that any one of these circumstances guarantees a request or a particular outcome.

Keep regulatory examples in their proper scope. FINTRAC’s CAD 1,000 figure concerns specified identity verification for international EFT participants in Canada. Separately, GOV.UK describes a €1,000 verification condition for covered payment-service-provider transfers. Neither figure establishes a universal trigger for banks to request source-of-funds evidence. The applicable rules and coverage depend on jurisdiction and circumstances; consult the bank for its request and a qualified adviser for advice about a legal obligation.

What to do when the bank contacts you

  1. Get the precise request. Ask the bank which documents or details it needs, the relevant date range, acceptable file types, whether translations are needed and how to submit the material securely. These practical details vary; there is no universal rule for them in the cited guidance.
  2. Explain the payment plainly and truthfully. State what the transfer is for and how the money was acquired. Keep the explanation consistent with the actual transaction.
  3. Choose records that support that explanation. Use evidence appropriate to the stated source, such as employment records, sale paperwork, inheritance documents or relevant account statements. A statement can show movement of money, while a record of the underlying activity may explain its origin.
  4. Check the details before sending. Compare names, amounts, dates and account details across your explanation and documents. Inconsistencies can make it harder to understand how the records relate to the transfer.
  5. Clarify unclear or unusually broad requests. Contact the bank using a known official channel and ask what specific issue it needs the documents to resolve. Do not alter records or create evidence to fit a requested explanation.

If your bank’s request seems to ask for more than you expected, do not assume a general internet checklist will resolve the issue. Ask the bank to explain the specific information it needs and whether it wants proof of identity, the payment’s purpose, the funds’ origin, or broader information about your wealth. Submit accurate, relevant records through the bank’s confirmed secure channel, and keep a copy of what you provide.

What the guidance does—and does not—establish

The cited sources help explain common review categories and give examples, but they do not provide a universal checklist, a standard response deadline or a promise that a particular document will satisfy a bank. HMRC’s material is UK supervisory guidance on due diligence and risk; it is not a binding customer checklist for every country. FINTRAC’s threshold is Canadian and concerns identity verification. GOV.UK’s payment-message guidance applies within its stated framework. A single bank’s form illustrates possible fields, not standard requirements across the sector.

For that reason, send relevant, accurate records requested by your own bank rather than assembling every document listed here. If you are also considering a different transfer provider, compare the total cost and exchange rate, amount the recipient will receive, estimated delivery time, supported destination and currency, customer service, and that provider’s verification process. A change of provider should not be treated as a way to avoid legitimate review.

Cost and convenience are only part of the comparison. A provider’s destination coverage, currencies, estimated delivery time and customer-service options may matter alongside the exchange rate and total amount received. Requirements and program availability are provider-specific, so confirm current terms directly. No provider should be treated as a guaranteed way around legitimate identity or transaction review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents do I need for an international bank transfer?

There is no universal list. A bank may ask for identity details, beneficiary and receiving-bank information, the payment purpose, and records supporting where the funds originated. Follow the checklist from the bank handling your transfer, because requirements vary by institution, countries, route, amount, customer profile and risk review.

Why is my bank asking for proof of source of funds?

A bank may use source-of-funds checks as part of ongoing monitoring to assess whether a transaction fits what it knows about you, your business and your risk profile. A transfer from an account not in your name or activity that differs from an expected pattern can prompt additional questions, but no single circumstance guarantees a request.

Is a bank statement enough to prove where the money came from?

A statement can show that money is in an account and help trace its movement, but it may not explain how it was acquired. Depending on your explanation, employment records, sale paperwork, inheritance documents or other relevant records may help explain the underlying source. Ask your bank what it needs for your particular review.

Is there a transfer amount that automatically triggers a source-of-funds check?

The cited guidance does not establish a universal amount that triggers the same document request at every bank. FINTRAC’s CAD 1,000 figure relates to specified identity verification for international EFT participants in Canada, not a global source-of-funds threshold. GOV.UK also describes a €1,000 verification condition for covered payment-service-provider transfers; its scope is not universal.

Can I use a different transfer provider to avoid a document review?

No provider should be treated as a way to avoid legitimate review. Verification processes and requirements vary by provider, destination and transfer value. If comparing providers, consider total cost and exchange rate, the amount the recipient will receive, estimated delivery time, destination and currency coverage, customer service, and the provider’s verification process.

The Bottom Line

There is no one document list for every international transfer. A bank may ask for identity and beneficiary details, the payment purpose, or records that explain the origin and movement of the funds. Give a truthful explanation, provide relevant and accurate records, and ask your own bank to clarify anything unclear; examples and regulatory thresholds in other jurisdictions are not universal rules.
