Short answer: An NFL listing has two separate pieces of information: the scheduled kickoff and the outlet carrying that game. The league schedule commonly displays kickoff in Eastern Time (ET), while a LOCAL view or the location-aware Ways to Watch guide shows what applies where you live. The network or streaming label identifies the listed outlet, but your market, subscription, device, provider login, rights restrictions, and blackouts determine whether you can actually watch.
How to read an NFL listing in a few seconds
Start with the time-zone label, then identify the game window and the listed outlet. Do not assume that a clock time is local simply because it appears beside your team’s logo. On the official NFL schedule, times such as 1:00 p.m. ET or 8:20 p.m. ET are explicitly marked as Eastern Time. The same schedule interface provides a LOCAL display, and the NFL’s Ways to Watch guide can personalize listings after you enter your location and viewing services.

These labels describe scheduling and distribution, not the quality of the broadcast or a universal entitlement to it. Treat the game-specific listing as the final authority.
What time is kickoff in my time zone?
Use the NFL schedule’s LOCAL view or enter your location in the official Ways to Watch guide. Those are safer than mentally applying a fixed subtraction to every game because daylight-saving transitions and the rules of your particular time zone affect the result.

When the schedule says ET
ET means Eastern Time. A listing of 1:00 p.m. ET is a 1:00 p.m. start in the Eastern zone, not a promise that the game begins at 1:00 p.m. on your wall clock. The schedule also commonly shows 4:25 p.m. ET for a late Sunday window, 8:20 p.m. ET for Sunday Night Football, and 8:15 p.m. ET for Thursday or Monday night windows. These are recurring windows, not a guarantee that every game will use one of them.
Using LOCAL instead of guessing
- Open the official NFL schedule for the relevant week.
- Find the time-zone control or display option and select LOCAL rather than ET.
- Confirm that the page has your correct location; a browser, account, or manually selected city can affect the result.
- Check the date as well as the clock time. A daylight-saving change between two weeks can alter the difference from ET.
If LOCAL is not available in the view you are using, enter your city or ZIP code in the NFL’s location-personalized Ways to Watch guide. A location-aware result is preferable to a generic time-zone chart when you are close to a border, traveling, or checking a game around a daylight-saving transition.
Why a familiar window can still be different
Sunday afternoon games often occupy 1:00 p.m. ET or 4:25 p.m. ET windows, while national night games commonly use 8:20 p.m. ET or 8:15 p.m. ET. Late-season flex scheduling, Saturday games, international games, and Week 18 selection can produce different start times. The window is a scheduling pattern, not a rule that overrides the time printed for the specific matchup.

Does the time on the NFL schedule mean Eastern time or local time?
Unless the page labels the entry LOCAL, read the prominently displayed schedule time as ET when the schedule is using its standard format. The official interface separates ET from LOCAL so readers can distinguish the league’s reference clock from a viewer-specific conversion.
For example, if a game is listed as 8:20 p.m. ET, a viewer in another U.S. time zone should use the LOCAL display or the Ways to Watch location setting rather than assuming the listing is already local. The exact local result depends on the game date and the location’s daylight-saving rules. International viewers should likewise rely on the location-aware guide, because a simple U.S. time-zone conversion may not account for local calendar changes.

Do not confuse a local-market broadcast with a local-time display. “Local” in the schedule control refers to the clock where you are. “Local market” refers to the geographic broadcast area for a team, and it affects which Sunday afternoon game a television affiliate carries.
What channel is the NFL game on today?
The outlet depends on the game’s window, whether it is a local or national assignment, and the season’s rights. The following is the NFL’s current high-level broadcaster map; it is a guide to the type of listing, not a permanent rule. Always open the entry for the particular game.

The NFL’s broader Ways to Watch guide displays television providers and streaming services as options for a personalized schedule. An icon in that guide means the service is a possible route for the listed game, not that the service carries every NFL game or that your current package includes it.
Why does the TV listing say one network while my local guide shows another game?
This usually reflects the difference between a national schedule label and a local-market Sunday afternoon feed. CBS and FOX divide the Sunday afternoon window among regional affiliates. Your local station normally shows the game assigned to your market, while another city can receive a different matchup at the same kickoff time. A national listing for NBC, ESPN, ABC, Amazon Prime Video, NFL Network, YouTube, or Netflix is describing a separate league-wide or specifically assigned outlet.
National assignment versus local affiliate
A schedule page may identify the broad network that owns the window. Your provider’s electronic guide then maps that network to a local channel number and, for Sunday afternoon, selects the regional game feed. Channel numbers vary by television provider and city, so the network name is more portable than the number shown on your remote.

Listings that appear to conflict
- Compare the matchup, not just the network logo. Two games can share the same kickoff window while different markets receive different teams.
- Check whether one entry is the national game and the other is a local affiliate’s regional feed.
- Refresh the provider guide if the game was recently flexed or its assignment changed.
- Use the NFL’s location-aware guide to see the combination of game, outlet, and viewing option intended for your area.
How do I find out whether a game is available in my area?
Availability is a separate check from kickoff. The NFL’s Ways to Watch tool asks for your location and viewing services so it can filter the schedule. Follow this sequence before game day:
- Identify the exact matchup and date. Do not search only for “NFL today”; late-season weeks can contain multiple windows and changing assignments.
- Enter your location. Use the guide’s location prompt so it can distinguish your local-market broadcast from an out-of-market game.
- Select or connect your television provider. The generic TV Provider option assumes access to FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network. Your actual provider may not carry every one of those outlets in every package or region.
- Choose the device you will use. A phone, tablet, connected television, desktop browser, and set-top box can have different sign-in or app requirements.
- Read the access note for that game. Look for a provider login, a required subscription, an exclusive streaming outlet, or a rights and blackout notice.
- Recheck shortly before kickoff. A tentative assignment or late-season flex move can change the result that the guide displays.
This process tells you whether a listed route is usable in your circumstances. It does not turn a network logo into a guarantee of reception, and it cannot remove a blackout or a regional-rights limitation.
Local-market, out-of-market, and mobile viewing are different
Local-market Sunday afternoon games
The NFL identifies CBS and FOX for local-market Sunday afternoon games. Your market determines which of the games in that window is shown by the local affiliate. The result can differ from a friend’s listing in another city even when both of you have the same television provider brand.
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games
The NFL identifies NFL Sunday Ticket, available through YouTube TV, for out-of-market Sunday afternoon games. “Out of market” means the game is outside the local broadcast area assigned to your location. The game still remains subject to the applicable rights and blackout restrictions, so check the current listing rather than assuming that an out-of-market package covers every circumstance.
NFL+ and supported screens
The NFL says NFL+ offers live local and nationally televised games on mobile phones and tablets. Watching on a connected television or desktop may require a supported cable or streaming-provider sign-in. The device distinction matters: a service that shows a game on a phone is not automatically a license to show it on every larger screen.

International and exclusive games
International games and selected Saturday or holiday games can have dedicated outlets. The São Paulo Week 1 game is identified with YouTube, while exclusive Christmas Day games are identified with Netflix. NFL Network also carries selected exclusive, international, and Saturday games. Location, rights, and the season’s announced assignments control whether those outlets are available to you.

Yes. The league uses flexible scheduling, and some late-season information is intentionally released later. A listing marked not finalized is not a missing detail you should fill in from a typical Sunday window; it means the assignment has not been finalized in the schedule you are viewing.
Weeks 16 and 17
The NFL can leave designated games in Weeks 16 and 17 unassigned until later announcements. Their eventual kickoff and outlet depend on the competitive picture and the league’s scheduling decisions.
Week 18
Week 18 dates, start times, and networks are announced after Week 17. The league selects those matchups once playoff implications are known, so an early-season calendar cannot provide a final Week 18 appointment.
Flex scheduling windows
Games in a flex window are tentative and subject to change. A matchup can move to a more prominent window, or a previously listed time can be replaced. Reopen the official game listing before making travel plans, recording a program, or setting a reminder.
What the NFL schedule structure explains—and what it does not
The NFL’s schedule-making explainer describes a regular season of 272 games over 18 weeks. Each team plays 17 regular-season games and has one bye week. NFL Football Operations states: “Each NFL team plays 17 games over the 18-week season.”
Those figures explain why the calendar includes bye weeks, different Sunday windows, Thursday and Monday games, Saturday games, and a final week whose assignments are made late. They are structural facts, not a prediction of how many games will appear on your local channel. Schedule makers also weigh fans, broadcast partners, venue events, travel, and logistics, so the league’s preferred window may not match the most convenient time for every market.
Troubleshooting common NFL listing problems
The listed kickoff is an hour earlier or later than expected
Check whether you are viewing ET instead of LOCAL and confirm the game date. Daylight-saving changes can alter the difference between Eastern Time and your local clock. If you are traveling, update the location in the NFL guide rather than relying on the location saved at home.

The network is listed, but the channel is missing
The NFL schedule names the outlet; your provider supplies the local channel number. Search the provider’s guide by network and matchup, verify that the channel is included in your package, and confirm that the game is not a regional Sunday afternoon feed assigned to another affiliate.
A streaming app shows the service, but playback is blocked
Check the account or provider login, supported device, location permission, subscription level, and any rights or blackout notice. An outlet appearing in the Ways to Watch guide does not establish that every device or package has the same entitlement.
The game disappeared or moved
Look for a flex-scheduling update, a replacement kickoff, or a newly announced Week 16, Week 17, or Week 18 assignment. Refresh the official listing and your provider’s guide close to game time.
The local guide shows a different Sunday afternoon matchup
That is often normal regional distribution. Compare your market with the location entered in the NFL guide and distinguish the local affiliate’s feed from an out-of-market listing.

- Read the time label: ET, LOCAL, or another explicitly identified zone.
- Confirm the date and matchup, especially in a week with several games.
- Check whether the entry is confirmed, not finalized, or in a flex window.
- Identify the listed outlet and then find its local channel, app, or website on your chosen device.
- Verify your location, provider package, subscription, and login.
- Check whether the game is local-market, out-of-market, mobile-only under the stated service, international, or subject to a blackout.
- Refresh both the NFL listing and your provider guide on game day.
Keeping the clock question and the access question separate prevents the most common mistakes: a correct ET kickoff read as a local time, a network assignment mistaken for a guaranteed channel, and a national listing assumed to apply identically in every market.
