An Ethernet port light usually tells you whether a link is present, whether data is moving, and sometimes the negotiated connection speed. But there is no universal color chart: a steady green, flashing amber or dark LED can mean different things on different routers and switches. Check the manual for the exact model—and, on a managed switch, the selected LED mode—before treating a color as a fault.
What Ethernet lights usually indicate
Read the light by its state, color and device context. A steady light often indicates a link; blinking often indicates traffic. Those are common patterns, not industry-wide rules.

- Off: Often means no link or no connected device. A switch port may also be administratively disabled.
- Steady: Often means a link is established. Some devices use the color of a steady light to indicate link speed.
- Blinking: Often means data is being sent or received. Blinking alone does not necessarily signal a problem.
- Color: Green, white, amber or yellow may indicate speed or another port state, depending on the device and LED mode.
For example, NETGEAR says that on the router models covered by its LED guide, white or green indicates a 1 Gbps Ethernet connection and amber indicates 100 or 10 Mbps. That describes those listed models, not a universal rule. NETGEAR Support last updated the guide on July 7, 2025.

| Device and scope | Off | Steady or on | Blinking or color meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| NETGEAR routers covered by the support guide | No device connected to the Ethernet port | A powered device is connected | Blinking indicates traffic. White or green indicates 1 Gbps; amber indicates 100 or 10 Mbps. |
| TP-Link Wi-Fi 5/6 router examples | No powered device connected | A powered device is connected, with no traffic | Green flashing indicates LAN activity. TP-Link says its guide applies to most models and that details vary. |
| NETGEAR GS324 switch | The speed LED is off when there is no link | Green indicates 1000 Mbps; yellow indicates 10/100 Mbps | The LED blinks when network traffic passes through the port. |
| Cisco Catalyst 2960 in STAT mode | No link, or the port is administratively shut down | Green indicates a link | Blinking green indicates activity; amber indicates spanning-tree blocking; alternating green and amber indicates a link fault. |
TP-Link’s examples are in its router lighting guide, dated March 24, 2022. NETGEAR documents GS324-specific meanings in its GS324 FAQs, last updated July 7, 2025. Do not apply either device’s color meanings to another model.
Why amber or yellow does not always mean trouble
On some consumer routers and switches, amber or yellow indicates a lower negotiated Ethernet link rate rather than a fault. On the NETGEAR router models covered by its guide, amber means 100 or 10 Mbps; on the GS324, yellow means 10/100 Mbps. The light reports the device’s connection, not your internet plan’s speed.

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
Switches can use amber for other states. In STAT mode, a Cisco Catalyst 2960 uses amber for spanning-tree blocking and alternating green and amber for a link fault. The same switch can assign speed meanings to LEDs in SPEED mode. Check the mode before interpreting the color; Cisco documents the modes and indicators in its Catalyst 2960 hardware guide.

- Identify the device and exact model. Find its Ethernet LED definitions in the manual or official support page. If it is a managed switch, check the selected port LED mode as well.
- Check both ends of the connection. Confirm that the other device is powered, the cable is seated at both ends, and it connects to the intended ports.
- Check whether the port is enabled. A dark light can indicate no link, but a switch port may also be administratively shut down.
- Confirm the link rate in software. If the light suggests a lower speed, check the device’s network status or management interface. Do not confuse Ethernet link rate with internet service speed.
- Test with a known-good cable or another port. This can help isolate a cable or port issue; it does not rule out a disabled interface, configuration problem, failed port or issue with the other device. Cisco specifies Category 5 or higher cable for the copper Ethernet connections in its cited guide.
If the light is on a computer
Computer and motherboard Ethernet-port LEDs are also model-specific. The router and switch examples above do not establish a universal code for a PC network interface. Check the computer or motherboard manual for the meaning of its port lights.
