What Do Bluetooth Codecs Do, and Do They Matter for Earbuds?

Bluetooth codecs compress audio for wireless playback. Learn when codec support matters, what the main codec names mean, and how to check compatibility.

Bluetooth codecs encode and compress audio so it can travel wirelessly to your earbuds, where it is decoded for playback. They matter chiefly for compatibility and for trade-offs such as audio quality, power use, and latency—but a codec name alone does not tell you whether earbuds will sound better. Your audio source and earbuds must both support the codec, and the connection mode and settings must allow it to be used.

What a Bluetooth codec does

A codec is the method used to encode and decode digital audio. Because a Bluetooth connection has limited bandwidth, the audio is compressed before transmission and decoded by the earbuds. Different codecs and product implementations make different trade-offs in how they use that connection.

Codec support is specific to the transmitting device, earbuds, and connection mode. A phone or computer may support a codec that the earbuds do not, or the devices may connect using a mode that does not use it. A listed codec is not proof that it is active during playback.

Classic Audio and LE Audio are different systems

Bluetooth SIG distinguishes Classic Audio, which uses Bluetooth Classic radio, from LE Audio, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy radio. LE Audio includes the LC3 codec. A device’s Bluetooth version alone does not establish that it supports LE Audio or any particular codec; check the specifications for both devices and the connection mode.

How the main codec names differ

Codec What to know
SBC Sony describes SBC as the standard audio coding technology for Classic Audio and says all Classic Audio devices support it.
AAC A codec supported by some products. Sony characterizes it as mainly used in Apple products such as iPhone; that is not a universal platform rule.
aptX family Qualcomm’s proprietary family includes variants with different characteristics. Qualcomm says aptX Adaptive supports adjustable bitrate and a low-latency mode. Both the source and earbuds need compatible support.
LDAC Sony describes LDAC as its high-resolution audio coding technology. Whether a product uses it can depend on source compatibility and playback settings; Sony notes that a quality-priority setting may be required.
LC3 The codec included in LE Audio. Bluetooth SIG says it is designed to provide high quality at lower data rates and gives manufacturers flexibility in balancing sound quality and power use. LE Audio requires LC3 support, while optional or custom codecs may also be supported.

Do codecs make a noticeable difference?

They can, but there is no universal codec ranking that predicts how a particular pair of earbuds will sound. Performance depends on the codec implementation and the rest of the listening chain; fit and the earbuds’ sound tuning also matter. The available evidence does not establish a controlled, independent ranking of all major codecs across current earbuds.

Bluetooth SIG reports that listening tests found LC3 delivered higher audio quality than SBC at the same bitrate, or similar or slightly better quality at less than half the bitrate. The comparison is the SIG’s characterization of its tests, not a guarantee of an audible improvement with every device or listener. The SIG’s LE Audio overview attributes this statement to Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS: “Extensive listening tests have shown that LC3 will provide improvements in audio quality over the SBC codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate.”

Latency, battery life, and connection stability also depend on implementation

Codec support can matter for video or games, but a codec label does not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay. The source, earbuds, and product settings all contribute to audio/video synchronization. If low latency matters, check that both devices support the relevant feature and look for a product-specific low-latency mode.

Settings can affect battery life and stability too. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 Help Guide says playback time may shorten depending on sound-quality settings and usage conditions, advises switching to a stable-connection setting if sound stutters, and documents an LE Audio low-latency setting. These are product-specific examples, not universal behavior for all earbuds.

How to check codec compatibility before buying

  1. Check the exact earbud model. Read its specifications or help guide for supported codecs and whether they apply to Classic Audio, LE Audio, or a particular playback mode.
  2. Check the phone or computer. Confirm that the source supports the same codec and connection mode. For LE Audio, verify that the host device and its software support it; Microsoft’s LE Audio driver documentation is relevant to Windows compatibility.
  3. Check settings and requirements. A compatible codec may require a particular sound-quality setting, operating-system support, or feature toggle. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 guide, for example, lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for Classic Audio music playback and LC3 for LE Audio, and notes that a compatible Android phone and settings may be needed for LE Audio.
  4. Compare the qualities you will actually use. Consider fit and sound tuning, stability where you listen, battery life at your intended settings, microphone quality, controls, noise cancellation, multipoint features, price, and return policy alongside codec support.

When codec support should influence your choice

For casual listening, first make sure the earbuds work with your phone or computer and suit your needs for fit, sound, battery life, and features. Give codecs more weight if you have a specific reason—such as using a preferred codec, trying LE Audio, or seeking a low-latency mode. In those cases, verify support on both ends and confirm the feature is enabled. Do not choose earbuds on a codec label alone or assume that a higher-resolution or newer-sounding name guarantees better results.
