Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K to an HDMI port, supply power using the instructions for your model generation, select that HDMI input on your TV, and follow the on-screen steps to connect Wi-Fi and register your Amazon account. The remote should pair automatically after you install its batteries; if it does not, use the Home-button procedure below.
Before you begin
Have the Fire TV Stick 4K and remote, the included power parts and batteries, a TV with an available HDMI port, your Wi-Fi name and password, and your Amazon sign-in details ready. Amazon has different setup directions for the 2nd- and 3rd-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, so check the model and use the matching power instructions.

Connect the Stick and power
- Install the remote batteries according to the instructions inside its battery compartment.
- Plug the Stick into an available HDMI port on the TV. If nearby cables, a recessed port, or a wall-mounted TV makes the connection awkward, use a compatible HDMI extender if you have one. Amazon says an extender can help when the rear-panel pocket is under 4.5 inches deep, cables crowd the port, or the TV sits close to the wall with rear-facing HDMI ports. - Connect power according to the generation:
- 2nd Generation: Amazon lists a power cable and adapter in the box and directs users to connect the adapter to a wall outlet. Its instructions say not to connect the USB power cable directly to the TV. Follow the 2nd-generation setup guide.
- 3rd Generation: Amazon describes connecting the included short USB-C power cable to the TV’s USB-A port. If the cable does not reach or the Stick reports insufficient power, Amazon recommends trying a USB-C cable and a 5V 1A adapter plugged into a wall outlet. Follow the 3rd-generation setup guide.
- Turn on the TV and use its remote to select the HDMI input where you connected the Stick. The Fire TV setup screen should appear.
Connect Wi-Fi and register your Amazon account
Follow the prompts on screen. To connect to Wi-Fi, scan the displayed QR code with a phone or choose your network and enter its password using the Fire TV remote. To sign in or register, scan the on-screen QR code or enter the activation code at the address shown on the TV.

If your Amazon account was created without a password, Amazon’s 3rd-generation directions say to press Back when asked for a password, then enter the verification code shown on screen at the displayed Amazon address. If you cannot sign in because you forgot your password, use Amazon’s account recovery process.

Pair the Fire TV remote
After you insert the batteries and turn on the TV, the remote should pair automatically and show a confirmation on screen. If it does not, try these steps in order, following Amazon’s Fire TV remote pairing instructions:
- Move within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV device and hold the remote’s Home button for about 10 seconds, until the pairing prompt appears.
- If pairing still fails, remove the batteries, wait 30 seconds, reinstall them, and hold Home again.
- Try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries. Then, if needed, reset the remote by holding Left, Menu, and Back together for 12 seconds; press Home again afterward.
- If the remote still will not pair, unplug the Fire TV device, wait five seconds, and reconnect it.
If seven controllers are already paired with the device, remove one before pairing another. You can also use the Fire TV mobile app as an alternative way to control the device.

Finish setup and resolve common problems
Configure TV or soundbar controls
Continue through the remaining prompts to configure equipment control, such as using the Alexa Voice Remote for supported TV or soundbar functions.

For the 3rd-generation Stick, check that the included USB-C cable reaches the TV’s USB-A port. If it cannot reach or the Stick reports insufficient power, try a USB-C cable with a 5V 1A wall adapter, as Amazon recommends. Check whether you already have compatible parts before buying anything.

The HDMI connection is difficult to reach
An extender is optional. Use one if the port is cramped or blocked by the TV’s position or other cables; it is not a required step when the Stick fits securely in the HDMI port.
Wi-Fi does not appear or connect
Check that you selected the intended network and entered its password correctly. For model-specific guidance, consult Amazon’s 3rd-generation or 2nd-generation setup page.
