The drive and its firmware still determine what the console can physically recognize. A disc-equipped PS5 officially reads PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray video, standard Blu-ray, supported BD-R and BD-RE media, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and AVCHD-compatible DVDs. Sony lists CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported. PS2 and PS3 game discs also cannot be played from the PS5 disc drive.
Officially supported PS5 disc formats
Sony’s format list applies to a PS5 with a working optical drive, regardless of whether the console is running stock software or a homebrew-capable firmware. “Supported” means the console is designed to recognize and use the disc; it does not guarantee that every title, recording method, region or authoring configuration will work.

Sony’s PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual lists these playable categories: PlayStation 5 format Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PlayStation 4 format Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and AVCHD. The list describes the optical media, not a promise that a modified system can run software written for another PlayStation generation.

Audio CDs and other CD media
CD is not supported. That includes ordinary audio CDs and other CD-based media. A jailbreak may let homebrew software work with files copied to USB storage or internal storage, but that is different from making the optical pickup read a CD. There is no general, Sony-documented CD-reading mode for a modded PS5.

BD-RE version 1.0
Rewritable Blu-ray discs made to the BD-RE version 1.0 specification are explicitly excluded. A later BD-RE disc can still fail if it is XL media, incorrectly authored or physically damaged, so the label “BD-RE” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
BD-R and BD-RE XL
BD-R XL and BD-RE XL use higher-capacity Blu-ray variants that Sony lists as unsupported. A standard-capacity BD-R or BD-RE is the safer choice when you need recordable Blu-ray media. Capacity, layer structure and authoring must match the supported specification; changing the filesystem or burning software does not turn an XL disc into a standard disc.
Unfinalized DVDs
A DVD-R, DVD+R or rewritable DVD that has not been finalized cannot be played, even though the underlying disc type appears on Sony’s supported list. Finalization writes the closing information that lets a player identify the completed volume. A disc left open for additional recording can therefore produce a format or read error on an otherwise functioning PS5.

Physical formats and damaged discs
Sony warns against inserting 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or deformed discs, repaired discs, or discs carrying paper, stickers or adhesive labels. These can wobble, shed material, jam the mechanism or damage the optical path. Modifying system software does not remove those mechanical risks.
Why modding does not automatically expand optical support
A jailbreak changes what software can run, not the optical pickup, spindle mechanism, laser characteristics or the drive’s built-in media handling. Homebrew can add emulators, file managers, media players or custom loaders, but the official documentation does not establish a universal payload that makes the PS5 read CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-XL or unfinalized DVDs.
Exploit demonstrations are often specific to a console model, firmware revision, drive revision and payload. Treat a claim about a BD-J exploit or a custom disc loader as method-specific until its maintainer documents the exact model and firmware combination. A disc that triggers an exploit is not necessarily a disc format that the PS5 supports for normal video, game or data playback.

Can a jailbroken PS5 play burned DVDs?
It can play a burned DVD when the disc is one of Sony’s supported DVD types and has been prepared correctly. Use DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW, create a compatible DVD-Video or AVCHD structure, and finalize the disc. An unfinalized recording remains unsupported. DVD data discs may be readable as data without being recognized as a playable movie if the authoring structure is wrong.
Checks for a burned DVD
- Confirm that the blank is DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW, not an unsupported or unusual variant.
- Finalize the disc in the recording application. Do not leave the session open.
- For video, create a DVD-Video or compatible AVCHD project rather than copying a movie file to an arbitrary folder.
- If using DVD-VR media, check whether the recording relies on CPRM; Sony’s support is limited to specified CPRM-compatible cases.
- Test the finished disc in a standard player or computer before diagnosing the PS5 or its modified software.
Can a modded PS5 read CDs?
No general CD support is established. The PS5’s documented optical formats omit CD, and the lack of a CD playback option is also recorded by independent PS5 technical documentation. Playing an ISO or audio file from USB storage with homebrew is a separate workflow and does not prove that the drive can read the original CD.
Can PS2 or PS3 discs work in a PS5?
No. Sony’s manual states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” The limitation is broader than region or disc condition. Even a clean, genuine PS2 or PS3 disc is not a supported game-disc format for the PS5 drive.

Homebrew emulation may provide another way to run software in some environments, but that requires an appropriate emulator, legally obtained software image and sufficient compatibility. It does not make the original PS2 or PS3 optical disc playable through the PS5’s normal game-disc path.

For legitimate recordable Blu-ray video or data, choose standard-capacity BD-R or BD-RE media in a format supported by the PS5. Avoid BD-R XL and BD-RE XL because Sony explicitly excludes them, and avoid BD-RE version 1.0. Burning a disc for an exploit is different: no general blank-disc recommendation can be made without the exploit maintainer specifying the required model, firmware, filesystem and payload.
A successful exploit disc also does not change the supported-media rules afterward. If a payload loads from a particular disc, that only demonstrates that the payload recognized its intended trigger under those conditions. It is not evidence that the console can play every recordable Blu-ray or read an unsupported capacity.

What changes for a PS5 Digital Edition?
A Digital Edition has no optical drive until a compatible drive is installed. Sony’s accessory documentation identifies the CFI-ZDD1-series drive for CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 console groups. Verify the exact model family and any regional requirements before buying or installing one.
After a compatible drive is installed and operating, the console can use PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD media. Modding does not eliminate the drive requirement, and installing an incompatible drive does not create disc support.
Region, finalization and authoring issues that look like format failures
DVD region settings
Sony explains that the DVD region is set by the first DVD played and can be changed up to four times. A region mismatch can therefore prevent playback even when the disc is a supported DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD-ROM. Avoid using a valuable disc to test an unfamiliar region setting.

Region behavior depends on both the disc and the console. Ultra HD Blu-ray often has different regional rules from standard Blu-ray, while DVD playback uses the console’s DVD-region setting. A failure on one commercial disc does not by itself prove that the drive or format is unsupported.
Authoring and filesystem
Recordable media must contain a structure the PS5 understands. A finalized disc containing an ordinary file archive may be readable as data while a video application refuses to play it. Conversely, a correctly authored video disc can fail because it is an unsupported XL variant or an unfinalized session.

Troubleshooting a disc that will not read
- Identify the console. Read the CFI model number on the console or packaging. Digital Edition owners should confirm whether a CFI-ZDD1-series drive is installed.
- Identify the disc precisely. Check whether it is PS5 game, compatible PS4 game, UHD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, standard BD-R/RE, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW. Note XL, BD-RE version 1.0 and other markings.
- Check finalization. Re-record or finalize an open DVD session. A PS5 cannot play an unfinalized DVD simply because its blank type is listed as supported.
- Inspect the disc. Remove stickers, reject cracked, warped, repaired, 8 cm and non-circular discs, and clean compatible discs with a soft lint-free cloth.
- Test a known-good commercial disc. A working PS5 game or commercial DVD helps separate a media-authoring problem from a drive or system problem.
- Check region and title compatibility. Confirm DVD-region status and remember that PS4 game compatibility is title-dependent.
- Separate mod behavior from hardware behavior. Temporarily use the documented playback path or a supported stock environment where possible. If only a payload-triggering disc fails, consult that payload’s model-and-firmware documentation rather than assuming a new optical format exists.
Practical decision guide
- Want to play a PS5 game? Use a PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game disc.
- Want to play a PS4 game? Check that the specific title is supported and use its compatible Blu-ray game disc.
- Want 4K movie playback? Use a commercial Ultra HD Blu-ray on a console with an optical drive.
- Want to play a burned DVD? Use supported DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW media, author it correctly and finalize it.
- Want to use a recordable Blu-ray? Use standard BD-R or BD-RE; avoid XL and BD-RE version 1.0.
- Want to play a CD, PS2 disc or PS3 disc? The PS5’s documented optical support does not include it; modding alone does not change that.
- Have a Digital Edition? Install the compatible CFI-ZDD1-series drive before expecting any optical disc to work.
