For any specific title, the publisher decides whether to make a new version; Nintendo’s compatibility lookup tells you whether the existing Switch version can be played. Those are separate questions.
Three different meanings of “coming to Switch 2”
- Native Switch 2 release: A distinct game version made for the new system.
- Switch 2 Edition or upgrade: A version or upgrade pack that adds Switch 2-specific features to a selected Switch game. Terms and additions vary by title.
- Backward compatibility: The original Switch version runs on Switch 2. That does not make it a native release or mean it has been enhanced.
Nintendo’s 2025 investor material distinguishes Switch 2 exclusive software from Switch 2 Edition software and gives examples of upgrade packs for owners of certain Switch games. These examples show available release routes, not a universal policy or a prediction for any particular game. Nintendo’s 2025 financial results explanatory material also cautions that release dates may differ by region.

Who decides whether a game gets a new version?
The game’s publisher chooses whether to make and release a native Switch 2 version or offer a Switch 2 Edition or upgrade. Nintendo has not published a general formula that explains which titles publishers will select, and its public materials do not reveal private commercial agreements or unannounced plans. A game being playable through backward compatibility does not establish that a separate Switch 2 release is planned.
For a named title, look for a current announcement or regional store listing from its publisher. Check upgrade eligibility, cost, format and included features there rather than assuming an upgrade is free or available to every owner.

Why backward compatibility has exceptions
Nintendo says Switch 2 does not contain Switch hardware. Instead, Switch game data is converted in real time as it is read. In Nintendo’s Ask the Developer Vol. 16, Nintendo Switch 2 – Chapter 4, technical director Tetsuya Sasaki explains that conversion process. Hardware director Takuhiro Dohta says the goal was to run Switch games “as far as that’s possible.”
Nintendo supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but warns that some titles may be unsupported or only partly compatible. It also says testing and updates may change which titles are supported. The company has not published a reliable percentage for overall compatibility, so a broad claim that every game works would go beyond its guidance.
Controls and accessories can affect playability
A game may run but still need an original Switch controller or a physical accessory for a particular feature. Nintendo’s UK compatibility guidance lists examples:

Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console and need a separate way to charge. Check the specific feature you want to use; an accessory limitation does not by itself establish that the entire game is unplayable.

How to check a specific game
- Check the existing Switch version: Search Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility lookup for the exact title. Read any partial-compatibility notes, not just the headline status.
- Check the release route: Look for a distinct Switch 2 version, Switch 2 Edition or upgrade announcement from the publisher. Compatibility status alone does not confirm any of these.
- Check the terms for your region: Use the publisher’s current regional listing to confirm availability, release timing, eligible original version and upgrade contents.
- Check controls and accessories: If a feature depends on motion controls, an IR camera, a strap or another accessory, confirm the listed controller requirements for that feature.
Nintendo’s lookup answers whether an existing Switch game is playable on Switch 2; the publisher’s current announcement or listing answers whether a separate version or upgrade exists. For an unannounced game, neither compatibility nor general release examples can establish that it is coming as a new Switch 2 release.
