For a straightforward playthrough, follow the main console releases in this order: Silent Hill (1999), Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004), Silent Hill: Origins (2007), Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008), Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009–10), Silent Hill: Downpour (2012), and Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012). This is release order, not a timeline of events within the series.

Core Silent Hill games in release order

The sequence below focuses on the major console games. Release months and dates varied by region and platform, particularly for later entries, so the years are the clearest title-level guide.

  1. Silent Hill (1999) — The original PlayStation game. Konami records its Japanese release as March 4, 1999; North American and European releases followed later that year. Konami’s series portal and the Silent Hill Memories chronology document the releases.
  2. Silent Hill 2 (2001) — Play this before Silent Hill 3 when following release order. A Japan-only alternate-format spin-off, Silent Hill: Play Novel, also appeared in 2001; it is not part of the core console sequence.
  3. Silent Hill 3 (2003) — Although its number might suggest otherwise, it followed Silent Hill 2 by two years.
  4. Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) — The fourth main console entry.
  5. Silent Hill: Origins (2007) — The first of the later major console entries in this sequence.
  6. Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008) — Its regional releases came in different months.
  7. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009–10) — Its release year depends on platform and territory; there is no single global year that covers every release.
  8. Silent Hill: Downpour (2012) — One of two major console releases from 2012.
  9. Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012) — The other major console release from that year. Regional timing differed.

What release order means

Release order follows when games and related interactive experiences appeared, not when their stories take place. It is a useful way to see the series as players encountered it and avoids treating the numbered titles as a complete timeline. The first four main console games arrived in 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004.

Optional additions beyond the core sequence

The list above is a practical route through the major console games, not an inventory of every release associated with the franchise. If you want a broader release-order survey, these are notable additions and different-format experiences:

#1 Best Overall
Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
  • Silent Hill: Play Novel (2001) — A Japan-only alternate-format spin-off.
  • Mobile and arcade titles (from 2007) — Platform-specific releases sit alongside the console games; their dates and availability are not uniform across markets.
  • P.T. / Silent Hills playable teaser (2014) — A playable teaser associated with the announced Silent Hills project, not a completed full game.
  • Silent Hill: Ascension (2023) — An interactive streaming experience rather than a conventional standalone game.
  • Silent Hill: The Short Message (2024) — A separate release from the Silent Hill 2 remake.
  • SILENT HILL 2 remake (2024) — A distinct product released after the 2001 original. Konami describes it as a full remake and lists PS5 and PC/Steam; its current official title page provides product details.
  • SILENT HILL f (2025) — Set in 1960s Japan. Konami lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC storefronts on its official title page.
  • SILENT HILL: Townfall (2026) — Konami’s current portal lists it as available. The exact first release date by market is not established in the official pages cited here, so it is not assigned a more precise date.

Historical dates for these releases are compiled in the specialist Silent Hill Memories chronology, which states that it is unaffiliated with Konami. It records regional releases separately, so dates should be read as release windows or years where appropriate.

Should you play the original or the remake first?

If you want to follow the franchise’s historical release order, play the 2001 Silent Hill 2 at its place in the core sequence, then treat the 2024 remake as a later, separate release. Konami calls the remake a full remake of the PlayStation 2 game; it is not the original version and does not replace it in release order.

If your priority is a current entry point rather than a historical playthrough, Konami lists the remake for PS5 and PC/Steam. That makes it a clearly identified modern option, but the fact that it is a remake should not be taken to mean it reproduces the original experience exactly. Check Konami’s title page for current platform information; availability can change.

Why Silent Hill 2 comes before Silent Hill 3

In release order, Silent Hill 2 (2001) came before Silent Hill 3 (2003). The title number is not a reason to reverse them: the straightforward historical sequence is to play the second game first, then the third.
