China Construction Bank (CCB) determines its dividend from consolidated net profit attributable to equity shareholders, cumulative undistributed profit, capital needs and a board recommendation that shareholders approve. Its stated policy gives cash priority when the bank is profitable and has positive cumulative undistributed profit, with a policy minimum of 10% of consolidated attributable profit. In practice, CCB has kept its ordinary-share payout close to 30% in each recent year.
That payout currently appears reasonably sustainable, but the evidence supports a stable distribution rather than guaranteed annual increases. Capital ratios and allowance coverage provide substantial support, while weaker first-half 2025 profit, margins and returns show why future dividend growth still depends on earnings and balance-sheet conditions.

What actually determines CCB’s dividend?
A CCB dividend is not set by the share price or by a fixed cash amount. It is the result of a policy and approval process that connects the distribution to the bank’s consolidated financial results and capital position.

1. Consolidated profit attributable to shareholders
The starting point is net profit attributable to equity shareholders on a consolidated basis. This measure includes the results of the group, rather than only the parent bank, and represents the earnings available to ordinary shareholders after the relevant accounting adjustments.

CCB’s policy says the cash dividend distributed in a year shall be no less than 10% of that year’s consolidated net profit attributable to equity shareholders. The 10% figure is a policy floor, not an automatic promise that shareholders will receive exactly that amount or that a dividend will be paid under every circumstance.
2. Positive cumulative undistributed profit
Normal cash distribution also requires positive cumulative undistributed profit. In practical terms, CCB must have accumulated profits available for distribution after taking account of prior results and distributions. A profitable year by itself does not override this condition.
3. Capital, regulation and the bank’s needs
Banks retain part of their earnings to absorb losses, support loan growth and meet regulatory and internal capital requirements. CCB’s policy therefore operates within its capital-management framework. If risk-weighted assets expand rapidly, capital buffers become less comfortable or regulatory requirements change, management may decide to retain more earnings even when reported profit is positive.

The board recommends the dividend plan for shareholder consideration. Changes to the dividend policy itself involve a formal process: board discussion, a written explanation, views from independent non-executive directors and approval by special shareholder resolution. The annual distribution therefore reflects both the published framework and a decision by the bank’s governing bodies.
What is CCB’s payout ratio?
CCB’s recent ordinary-share payout has been remarkably consistent at about 30% of attributable profit. The 2025 annual report records a 30.0% payout ratio, matching 2024 and sitting very close to 2023’s 30.1%.
| Year | Reported cash payout ratio |
|---|---|
| 2022 | 30.0% |
| 2023 | 30.1% |
| 2024 | 30.0% |
| 2025 | 30.0% |
The 2025 annual report also reports total cash dividends of RMB101,684 million. Because the payout ratio is calculated against attributable profit, the absolute cash amount can rise or fall even when the percentage remains unchanged.

As an arithmetic implication of a 30% payout, roughly 70% of attributable earnings remains in the business. That retained portion is not a separately reported CCB “retention ratio”; it is simply the complement of the reported payout and can be used for capital support, growth or other approved purposes.
How much has CCB paid per share?
CCB’s 2024 annual report lists the following cash dividends per ordinary share:
| Dividend year | Cash dividend per share |
|---|---|
| 2022 | RMB0.389 |
| 2023 | RMB0.400 |
| 2024 | RMB0.403 |
These figures show a modest increase in the per-share amount through 2024, but they should not be read as a contractual annual-growth schedule. A per-share dividend depends on the approved total distribution, attributable earnings and the number of shares entitled to the payment.
When does the dividend arrive?
CCB introduced an interim dividend in 2024 and continued interim distribution in 2025. Annual cash return can therefore arrive in two installments instead of being concentrated in a single final-dividend payment.
This timing matters when comparing CCB with banks that pay only a final dividend. An investor assessing a calendar year should combine the interim and final distributions attributable to that year, while checking the relevant record dates and payment dates in the bank’s announcements. The existence of an interim payment does not change the underlying policy conditions: profit, cumulative undistributed profit, board recommendation and shareholder approval still apply.

Sustainability means more than whether the latest dividend was paid. For a bank, a durable payout requires recurring earnings, adequate capital after distribution and sufficient provisions against credit losses. CCB’s latest reported figures provide support on each of those dimensions, although none removes the possibility of a lower future dividend.

A stable distribution anchor
CCB has held the payout ratio around 30% for four consecutive reported years: 30.0% in 2022, 30.1% in 2023, 30.0% in 2024 and 30.0% in 2025. This consistency gives investors a clear planning reference and leaves a large share of earnings inside the bank.
Capital ratios above stated regulatory requirements
At 30 June 2025, CCB reported a common equity tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 14.34%, a tier 1 capital ratio of 15.19% and a total capital ratio of 19.51%. The half-year report said these ratios complied with regulatory requirements.
Strong capital ratios support the continuation of distributions because the bank is not starting from a position of immediate capital shortfall. They are not, however, a guarantee of a particular dividend: capital requirements apply to the bank’s evolving risk-weighted assets, and management can retain more profit if that asset base or the required buffers increase.
High allowance coverage relative to non-performing loans
CCB reported a non-performing-loan (NPL) ratio of 1.33% and allowance-to-NPL coverage of 239.40% at 30 June 2025. High coverage provides a cushion against losses already identified in the loan book and reduces the chance that a moderate deterioration immediately consumes distributable earnings.
Coverage is a snapshot, not a permanent shield. If defaults rise, recoveries weaken or new impairment charges accelerate, provisions can increase and reduce the profit available for future dividends.
A long distribution record
CCB stated in its 2025 half-year report that cumulative dividends since listing exceeded RMB1.3 trillion. The bank also described its approach as maintaining “consistent and stable cash dividends.” A long record is useful evidence of management’s distribution preference, but the policy and financial conditions still govern each individual year.

What could make the payout less sustainable?
The most important risks are visible in the first-half 2025 operating figures. They do not show that a cut is imminent; they show why the 30% ratio should not be treated as an unconditional guarantee.
Lower net interest margin
CCB’s net interest margin was 1.40% in the first half of 2025, down from 1.54% in the comparable period. Net interest margin measures the spread earned on interest-bearing assets after funding costs. A narrower margin can reduce revenue even when the loan book grows, putting pressure on attributable profit and the cash available for distribution.
Profit and return on equity declined
First-half 2025 net profit attributable to equity shareholders was RMB162,076 million, compared with RMB164,326 million in the first half of 2024. That is a year-over-year decline of 1.37%. Annualised return on average equity (ROAE) fell to 10.08% from 10.82% over the same comparison.
Lower profit does not mechanically force a lower payout ratio; CCB could keep the ratio at 30% and pay a similar amount if earnings remain resilient. It does mean that dividend growth would have less support unless profitability recovers.
Credit losses and asset-quality deterioration
The current NPL ratio and coverage figures describe conditions at 30 June 2025. A future increase in NPLs, higher impairment charges or weaker collateral recoveries would reduce earnings available for dividends. Credit costs can also consume capital, creating a second reason to retain more profit.

Higher capital needs
Loan growth, changes in the composition of assets or tighter regulatory buffers can raise the amount of capital CCB must hold. Even with positive earnings and a 30% historical payout, the board may choose a lower distribution if retaining earnings is the prudent way to preserve capital strength.

How to judge CCB’s dividend as an investor
A useful assessment separates the headline payout from the conditions that fund it. The following sequence avoids relying on yield alone.
- Confirm the earnings base. Use consolidated net profit attributable to equity shareholders and check whether it is rising, flat or falling. For the latest half-year period, CCB reported RMB162,076 million, down 1.37% year over year.
- Check the payout ratio across several years. CCB’s 30% range from 2022 through 2025 is more informative than one unusually high or low annual payment.
- Check margin and return trends. The first-half 2025 net interest margin of 1.40% and annualised ROAE of 10.08% were both below the comparable 2024 figures, indicating pressure on earnings quality and profitability.
- Review capital after the proposed distribution. The latest reported CET1, tier 1 and total capital ratios were 14.34%, 15.19% and 19.51%, respectively, and were reported as compliant. Watch whether those buffers narrow as assets grow.
- Review asset quality and provisions. Compare the 1.33% NPL ratio and 239.40% allowance coverage with future reports. Deterioration in either direction can change the room for distributions.
- Read the actual dividend resolution. The board recommendation, shareholder vote, record date and payment schedule determine what shareholders receive. An interim payment and a final payment should be combined when calculating the full annual cash return.
How to interpret the 10% policy minimum
The policy minimum is often misunderstood. CCB’s wording says cash dividends in a year shall be no less than 10% of consolidated net profit attributable to equity shareholders. That statement sits alongside the requirement for positive cumulative undistributed profit and the broader approval process.
It does not mean every investor is guaranteed a 10% yield, nor does it mean 10% of the share price. It is a percentage of a reported profit measure. A lower profit figure would produce a lower cash amount even if the 10% percentage were applied. Conversely, CCB’s recent 30% payout has been well above the policy floor.

CCB’s record supports a distinction that matters for planning. The bank has demonstrated payout stability: the ratio has stayed near 30%, and per-share dividends rose from RMB0.389 in 2022 to RMB0.403 in 2024. The available evidence is weaker on perpetual growth. First-half 2025 profit, margin and ROAE all declined, and a bank must balance shareholder distributions with capital and credit resilience.
For an income-oriented shareholder, the practical base case is therefore a distribution that tracks sustainable earnings near the established payout convention, not an assumption that each year will bring a larger per-share payment. A future increase would require stronger attributable profit or a deliberate change in the payout decision; a reduction could result from weaker earnings, higher losses or greater capital requirements.
Bottom line
CCB’s dividend is determined by consolidated attributable profit, positive cumulative undistributed profit, capital and regulatory considerations, and formal board and shareholder approval. The bank’s recent 30% payout ratio, strong reported capital ratios and 239.40% allowance coverage make the current distribution look reasonably sustainable. However, first-half 2025 profit fell 1.37%, net interest margin declined to 1.40% and annualised ROAE fell to 10.08%. Those trends mean the best-supported conclusion is stability with conditions—not a promise of uninterrupted dividend growth.
