In Edge, ordinary Copilot may use your prompt, recent conversation history, and browsing context selected for the request. That context can include a page’s URL, title and content, open tabs, or browsing history. Microsoft’s separate Browse with Copilot feature can also interact with webpages and has distinct access and screenshot-retention details. The two features do not share one identical data flow.
What ordinary Copilot in Edge may use
Microsoft says Edge chooses browsing context according to what you ask. If you ask Copilot to summarize or discuss a webpage, it may use the current page, its title, open tabs, and browsing history. If your prompt does not refer to page content, Microsoft says Edge uses no information beyond the URL, page title, prompt, and previous conversation history. Microsoft’s Context Clues explanation lists possible browsing context as the URL, page title, page content or screenshots, and browsing history. These are possible inputs, not a claim that every item is used for every prompt.

What appears in conversation history
Microsoft says browsing context is not stored in Copilot conversation history; the prompt and Copilot’s response are. That statement concerns conversation history only. It does not establish that browsing context is never processed, transmitted, or retained elsewhere, and Microsoft’s reviewed pages do not give a universal retention period for ordinary Edge Copilot prompts and responses.

Suggested prompts when Copilot opens
When Copilot opens, Edge uses open-tab titles and URLs to suggest prompts. Microsoft says Context Clues are not used to generate those suggestion tiles.
How to stop ordinary Copilot from using browsing context
- In Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says that with this setting off, Copilot cannot use the current webpage, page title, open tabs, or browsing history in responses. Suggestions and some answers may be less relevant. The setting and its effects are described in Microsoft’s Context Clues guidance.

Microsoft says it informs users or asks permission before first use of Edge information, depending on region, and then remembers the preference. Its reviewed documentation does not specify the regional consent rules; see Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge.

Browse with Copilot can take actions such as clicking, typing, and navigating tabs. Microsoft says it can work in the current tab or a new one, while the user monitors, interrupts, or takes control. Its availability is volatile: Microsoft describes a rollout to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with other markets to follow. Information it can access
For this feature, Microsoft lists screenshots, limited Edge profile data, cookies, open tabs, and site permissions. It says saved passwords, autofill data, and wallet information are inaccessible. However, if a website is already signed in through cookies, Copilot may also be signed in on that site.
What it saves and how long screenshots remain
Microsoft says Browse with Copilot saves prompts, responses, and a record of the work in conversation history. Screenshots are saved with the conversation, are not used for training, and are deleted when the conversation is deleted; otherwise, they are retained for up to 30 days. That 30-day maximum applies to screenshots captured by Browse with Copilot, not ordinary Edge Copilot chat.

Information typed directly into a webpage is not saved by Copilot, though Edge may save it. These details come from Microsoft’s Browse with Copilot documentation.

Microsoft describes Browse with Copilot as experimental. It may misinterpret instructions or encounter malicious hidden instructions in webpages. Microsoft recommends supervision and cautions against using it for sensitive financial activity or with personal identifiers, medical records, or highly confidential data. The fact that saved passwords and autofill are inaccessible does not mean the feature cannot encounter sensitive information displayed on a page.
