Compare Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK hynix on product mix, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) execution, matched-period financial results, capacity spending, and valuation—not on a single headline profit or price-to-earnings ratio. All three are exposed to memory demand, but they report on different schedules and have different business mixes. Strong AI-related demand does not remove the risk that memory prices and earnings can fall when supply outgrows demand.

Start with what each company sells

DRAM, NAND, and HBM do not have identical demand or margin profiles. HBM is a form of DRAM designed for high bandwidth; Micron describes it as a 3D-stacked architecture using through-silicon vias. Compare each company’s product exposure and the applications it serves before treating the companies as interchangeable bets on AI.

  • Micron: Its portfolio includes DRAM, NAND, and NOR, sold as components, modules, SSDs, managed NAND, multi-chip packages, and wafers. Its markets include data centers, client devices, graphics, industrial, mobile, automotive, consumer, and embedded applications. Micron FY2025 filing describes its products and markets.
  • Samsung Electronics: Samsung’s reported results include businesses beyond memory. Its consolidated revenue and profit therefore cannot be read as memory-segment performance. In Q2 2026, Samsung said its Memory Business achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit, with a server-heavy mix. Samsung Q2 2026 results.
  • SK hynix: The company highlighted HBM, AI-server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) as high-value products in its Q2 2026 results. Its performance is consequently closely tied to memory, including demand for AI infrastructure. SK hynix Q2 2026 results.

Those differences affect how investors interpret consolidated earnings: Samsung’s non-memory businesses add other drivers, while the cited Micron and SK hynix disclosures focus on memory products and markets.

Separate HBM milestones instead of counting announcements

HBM positioning is a useful comparison, but product samples, customer qualification, mass shipments, manufacturing yields, packaging capacity, and sustained profitable production are distinct steps. Company announcements establish what each company says it has done; they do not by themselves establish market share, yield, or future returns.

  • Samsung: In its Q2 2026 release, Samsung said it had scaled HBM4 sales and shipped HBM4E samples to major customers. It also described supply constraints and robust, server-centered demand in its outlook for the second half of 2026. That outlook is management’s expectation, not an independently verified forecast.
  • SK hynix: The company said it began HBM4 mass shipments in Q2 2026. Its release also said it planned to expand production while maintaining capital-spending discipline. Those are company-reported milestones and plans, not a guarantee of profitable output or future customer demand.
  • Micron: The supplied FY2026 results establish a sharp increase in company-wide revenue and operating income, but do not provide a directly comparable HBM shipment or qualification milestone. Do not infer relative HBM share from those totals.

For a deeper comparison, track the same measures for each company: generation being shipped, customer qualification, production volume, packaging capacity, yields where disclosed, and whether high-volume output is contributing to earnings.

Read financial results with their periods attached

The latest periods in the cited releases are not aligned: Micron reported fiscal Q4 and full-year 2026, while Samsung and SK hynix reported calendar Q2 2026. A fiscal year and a calendar quarter cover different spans, so headline figures are not a like-for-like ranking.

Company and period Reported figures How to interpret them
Micron, FY2026 Revenue: $133.188 billion; operating income: $99.340 billion; net capital expenditures: $27.37 billion Company-reported full fiscal-year figures. Net capital expenditures are for the full year. Micron FY2026 results.
Samsung Electronics, Q2 2026 Consolidated revenue: KRW 171.5 trillion; consolidated operating profit: KRW 89.5 trillion Whole-company figures, not memory-segment totals. Samsung separately reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit for its Memory Business; the figures above must not be attributed to that segment. Samsung Q2 2026 results.
SK hynix, Q2 2026 Revenue: KRW 79.3187 trillion; operating profit: KRW 60.5426 trillion; operating margin: 76% The company described the figures as preliminary and subject to change after independent audit. SK hynix Q2 2026 results.

These headline figures are not sufficient to rank earnings quality. When comparing filings, use matched periods and check revenue, gross and operating margins, cash flow, cash and debt, and segment definitions. Also distinguish full-year capital spending from quarterly results. Micron reported $73.48 billion in cash, marketable investments, and restricted cash at FY2026 year-end; that balance-sheet figure has a different date and scope from the quarterly results above.

SK hynix’s FY2025 release provides a separate annual reference point: revenue of KRW 97.1467 trillion and operating profit of KRW 47.2063 trillion, with HBM revenue more than doubling year over year. Those are FY2025 figures and should not be compared directly with Micron FY2026 or either company’s Q2 2026 results. SK hynix FY2025 results.

Assess capacity and the memory cycle together

Supply plans matter because memory production is capital-intensive. New capacity, advanced packaging, manufacturing utilization, and process execution can support growth when demand is strong; if supply later grows faster than demand, added capacity can weigh on prices and returns. Micron’s FY2025 filing identifies oversupply, falling selling prices, utilization, process integration, and efficient capital spending among the business risks and execution factors it monitors. This is a risk disclosure, not a prediction that oversupply is imminent.

Current company statements point to favorable conditions, but they are not proof that the cycle has permanently changed. Samsung described constrained supply and robust server demand, while SK hynix said customer demand exceeded its supply capabilities. Compare those claims with subsequent reported shipments, utilization, inventory, pricing, and investment rather than treating management outlooks as established outcomes.

Micron reported FY2026 net capital expenditures of $27.37 billion, while SK hynix said it intended to expand production and maintain capex discipline. These are not directly comparable measures: one is a reported full-year figure and the other a stated plan. The cited Samsung release does not establish a comparable capex figure here. Assess each company’s actual spending and capacity additions against demand and returns, not merely the size of an announced expansion.

Use valuation across more than one earnings scenario

A low price-to-earnings ratio can be misleading for a cyclical memory company if current earnings are unusually high. Test valuation against both current estimates and a normalized earnings case that assumes less favorable pricing and utilization. A sound comparison also uses the same date and methodology for all three stocks, including share price, diluted shares, enterprise value, and the source and assumptions behind forward estimates.

On October 7, 2026, the retrieved Stock Analysis pages showed forward P/E ratios of 5.94 for Micron and 4.32 for SK hynix. These are estimate-based market-data snapshots, not audited company figures; a comparable Samsung figure was not available in the retrieved data. The two values do not establish a complete three-company ranking. Refresh all three on one date and compare them using the same approach before drawing relative valuation conclusions. Micron market data; SK hynix market data.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Align reporting periods. Label fiscal versus calendar periods and compare equivalent quarters or trailing periods.
  2. Map product exposure. Separate DRAM, NAND, HBM, and adjacent server-storage products; account for Samsung’s non-memory businesses.
  3. Check HBM execution. Record generation, samples, qualifications, shipments, and production capacity as separate milestones, attributing company claims.
  4. Measure earnings and cash generation. Compare margins, cash flow, cash and debt, and capital spending using consistent periods and definitions.
  5. Test supply discipline. Compare investment and capacity expansion with demand, utilization, and the risk of future price declines.
  6. Recalculate valuation under different earnings assumptions. Use same-date inputs and a normalized case, not just peak-cycle earnings or one forward P/E snapshot.

The cited releases support a framework for comparing the companies, not a personalized investment recommendation or a prediction of returns. Any conclusion depends on current financial results, market prices, and assumptions about the next memory cycle.
