How to Block Someone on Facebook and Instagram—and What Restricting Means

Facebook’s block controls are documented, but the available official guidance here does not establish Instagram’s current Restrict steps or effects. On Facebook, go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Blocking to block or unblock a profile. Blocking limits many interactions, but it does not erase every shared space or point of visibility. Instagram has a specific exception worth knowing: someone you block may still see your likes and comments on public posts or posts from accounts they follow.

Block, restrict, or limit messages: which control should you use?

These controls are not interchangeable. Facebook documents a profile-level block, a separate option to block messages, and broader privacy settings. The available official Instagram material confirms one effect of blocking, but does not establish the current Restrict menu path or its precise effects. Avoid assuming Instagram’s Restrict feature works like any Facebook control.

What Facebook blocking does—and does not do

Facebook blocking prevents many interactions with the profile, but it is not a guarantee that the person can never encounter your content or activity. Facebook describes several exceptions:

  • Existing messages: Your message history remains in your inbox.
  • Shared group conversations: Messages in a group conversation that includes the blocked person may still be visible.
  • Mutual friends’ content: You may still see content involving mutual friends, including photos or tags shared by others.
  • Groups and events: Some group or event content may remain visible in particular circumstances.
  • External apps and games: A Facebook block does not carry over to third-party games or apps.
  • Other profiles: Blocking one profile does not automatically block other profiles the person may create.
  • Marketplace: Reviews and ratings have specific exceptions and may still be visible.

Facebook’s help page describes the scope and exceptions: What happens when I block someone on Facebook?

Block Facebook messages without blocking the profile

If the problem is limited to unwanted or uncomfortable messages, Facebook lists blocking messages and reporting the message as options. These messaging controls should not be described as blocking the person’s whole Facebook profile. Use Facebook’s current message controls on the conversation or message, and consult its help page for the applicable steps: Block messages from someone on Facebook.

What an Instagram block may still leave visible

Meta’s documented caveat is specific: a person you block on Instagram can still see your likes and comments on posts from public accounts or accounts they follow. This does not establish that all your profile information or content remains visible; it is a limitation about those interactions on other accounts’ posts. How to use Instagram Restrict

The available official guidance does not establish Restrict’s current menu path or exact effects, so there is not enough verified information here to give reliable tap-by-tap instructions or promise what the restricted person can see. Check Instagram’s current in-app options or its Help Center before relying on Restrict for a particular privacy or contact outcome. Do not treat it as equivalent to blocking.

Review Facebook privacy settings for broader protection

If your concern extends beyond one account, Facebook groups other privacy controls under Audience and visibility. These include settings for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, and profile and tagging. Facebook notes that some options vary by profile type. Facebook Help: Manage your privacy on Facebook.
