A VPN provider can technically handle the network traffic and metadata routed through its servers, including DNS requests and connection details. That does not mean it keeps a record of everything: what a service processes to route traffic is different from what it logs and retains. A VPN may also collect account, billing, support, or app-diagnostic data that is separate from browsing history.
What can a VPN provider see while you’re connected?
A VPN moves the network intermediary for traffic sent through its tunnel: instead of that traffic going directly through your internet provider, it passes through the VPN service. The provider’s servers must handle enough information to route it. Depending on the service and configuration, that may include:

- Your connecting IP address and the VPN server you use.
- Connection and disconnection times, session duration, or the VPN IP assigned to you.
- Data volume and timing.
- DNS requests and routing metadata, which may reveal queried domains or destination IP addresses.
These are categories a service may technically process or record, not a claim that every VPN collects or retains them. The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) notes that relevant data can arise across a VPN’s client, APIs, and gateways—not just its servers. CDT’s VPN assessment questions recommend evaluating the service as a whole.

Potentially, yes. If the VPN handles your DNS requests, it may process the domain names you look up. It may also handle destination IP addresses and traffic timing and volume. Whether it can associate those details with your account, and whether it stores them, depends on its architecture and logging practices.

Cloudflare’s documentation for its specific WARP product says that, when the client is enabled, it handles DNS queries and collects limited DNS-query and traffic data, excluding payload. That describes WARP; it should not be treated as a description of every VPN. Cloudflare’s WARP privacy documentation lists additional service-specific data it collects.
Can a VPN read my passwords or page contents?
A VPN can process unencrypted traffic that passes through its endpoint. For websites using HTTPS, the connection between your device and the website encrypts page contents, such as the text you submit in a form. This limits what an intermediary can read, but it does not necessarily conceal all connection metadata or domain clues. What is visible depends on DNS handling, routing, and configuration.

The Federal Trade Commission’s discussion of encryption concerns studied US internet service providers, not VPN providers. It helps explain the general limits of encryption for intermediaries, but it is not evidence about what a particular VPN can see. The FTC report should be read in that context.
What information might a VPN collect besides browsing activity?
Browsing logs are only one category of data. A provider may separately hold information needed to run an account or support its app and service, such as:

- Aggregate usage, transfer totals, or speed metrics.
For example, ExpressVPN’s policy describes account and payment information and optional diagnostics while disclaiming specified traffic logs. Cloudflare’s WARP documentation lists an app installation ID, transferred data, average speed, and aggregate traffic by website and region. These are examples from those services only; they do not establish industry-wide practices. ExpressVPN’s privacy policy and Cloudflare’s WARP privacy documentation describe their respective products.

A service may process information in real time to route a connection without keeping an identifiable history after the session ends. Conversely, a claim such as “no activity logs” does not, by itself, answer whether the provider retains connection details, diagnostic records, account data, or information collected by its apps and APIs. Ask separately what the service processes, what it records, and how long each category remains.

CDT distinguishes activity logs—records of browsing activity—from connection logs, which may include source IP, timestamps, or session duration. Its 2018 guide says activity logs can provide a record of browsing activity and are potentially more sensitive than connection logs. CDT’s guide recommends that providers make both policies easy to understand.
Provider claims are specific to the service and the policy or audit scope. ExpressVPN’s current policy says it does not collect browsing history, destinations, traffic content, DNS queries, or connection logs such as IP addresses, connection timestamps, and session duration; it separately describes account/payment information and optional app diagnostics. DuckDuckGo reports that Securitum’s audit, conducted from October 2025 through January 2026, found no user-attributable connection metadata, DNS logging, or VPN traffic inspection or logging in the audited system. Those statements do not prove that all VPNs follow the same practices. ExpressVPN’s policy and DuckDuckGo’s VPN privacy page give the provider-specific details.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
How to evaluate a VPN’s data practices
- Separate activity logs from connection logs. Look for explicit answers about browsing history, DNS queries, destinations, source and assigned VPN IP addresses, timestamps, session duration, and data volume.
- Check every part of the service. Review what the app, APIs, support systems, payment processor, and server operators collect—not only what the VPN gateway logs.
- Look for purposes and retention periods. “Minimal logs” is less informative than a list of data categories, why each is collected, and when it is deleted.
- Read audits within their scope. Check the auditor, date, systems and regions examined, and whether the work assessed policy, configuration, source code, or live operation. DuckDuckGo’s reported audit, for example, is evidence about the audited system and period, not every VPN.
- Consider infrastructure security separately. A 2024 study by Teemu Rytilahti and Thorsten Holz reported traffic-filtering weaknesses across a majority of the VPN service providers it tested. That finding concerns the tested networks and methods; it does not establish that every VPN exposes user data. The study’s USENIX Security 2024 page provides its scope.
- Review legal-request and transparency information. CDT recommends checking how a provider handles legal requests and what it discloses in transparency reports. A provider can disclose only data it holds, so assess those materials alongside the logging policy.
