Usually, not precisely. A website or lookup service can use your public IP address to estimate the location of the network or connection, often at country or regional level. A city result is only an estimate—not proof of your home address or where you are right now.
What an IP address can reveal
IP geolocation services associate blocks of IP addresses with geographic and network information. A lookup may show a country, region, or city, and sometimes an accuracy area, time zone, internet service provider, or other network details. These describe the IP address or network; they do not, by themselves, identify the person using it. MaxMind explains how IP geolocation accuracy varies by level of detail, while its GeoIP product information describes the kinds of information a lookup may return.

An IP lookup is not a GPS fix. It does not establish a person’s exact physical location or street address. MaxMind cautions that a common misunderstanding is that IP geolocation is designed to reveal a person’s precise location or street address. Its accuracy explanation treats geolocation as an estimate, not a way to pinpoint an individual.

Accuracy depends on the provider, the geographic area, the connection type, and the level of detail requested. Country estimates are generally more reliable than city estimates. MaxMind’s published figures are its own estimates for its GeoIP products, not independent measurements or guarantees for every lookup:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Location detail | MaxMind’s published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Country | 99.8% country-level accuracy, according to MaxMind’s undated support article accessed in 2026 | A provider estimate; not an industry-wide guarantee. |
| U.S. state or region | About 80% accuracy for U.S. IPs, according to the same support article | Regional estimates can still be wrong. |
| U.S. city | 66% accuracy within a 50 km radius, according to the same support article | A city result can cover a broad area; a map pin should not be read as an exact spot. |
In a separate explanation, MaxMind gives broader ranges: country-level accuracy generally exceeds 99% when VPN use is excluded, state or province accuracy typically ranges from 55% to 80%, and city-level accuracy typically ranges from 20% to 75%. These ranges reflect the provider’s description of varying accuracy; they are not universal performance guarantees. MaxMind’s accuracy explanation discusses the factors behind the variation.
Why a location result can be wrong or broad
- The database is an estimate. Providers maintain their own mappings, and results can differ or change as their databases are updated.
- The network path may not match your physical location. Mobile networks can route traffic across broad areas. A hosting or proxy IP may locate a server or endpoint rather than the person using it.
- The provider may not support a precise result. Some services provide confidence indicators or an accuracy radius, and may omit detailed fields when they do not have enough confidence.
For these reasons, a city label or map marker is a rough clue about an IP or network—not evidence that someone is at a particular home or street. MaxMind says its geolocation data is not precise enough to identify a specific household, individual, or street address. Its accuracy documentation and support article explain those limits.

What a VPN or proxy changes
A VPN routes your traffic through a VPN endpoint. The website you visit generally sees the endpoint’s IP address, so an IP lookup may show the VPN server’s location rather than yours. A proxy can have a similar effect. MaxMind notes that VPN use can affect IP geolocation accuracy.
This does not guarantee that a website will show a location you select with precision, nor does it make you anonymous. The result depends on the endpoint and the lookup provider, and the IP address is only one possible source of location information.

IP location is not the same as every kind of location tracking
This answer concerns location inferred from an IP address. A website or app may also obtain location through device permissions, account information, or other sources. Those are separate from IP geolocation, and an IP lookup alone does not establish what other data a particular service collects.

- Check whether the result is for a country, region, city, or a point accompanied by an accuracy radius.
- Look for a confidence indicator and note which provider produced the result; another provider may return a different estimate.
- Consider the connection type. A mobile network, VPN, proxy, or hosting address may place the apparent location away from the user.
- Treat the result as a rough network clue, not as identification evidence about a person or household.
MaxMind’s customer restrictions prohibit using its geolocation data to identify a specific household, individual, or street address, or encouraging others to do so. Read MaxMind’s acceptable use policy.
