Pixel Screen Resolution Explained: Pixels, PPI, and Display Sharpness

Resolution counts a screen’s pixels; PPI describes their physical density. Learn how to calculate PPI and why it is only one part of perceived sharpness.

Resolution tells you how many pixels a screen has across and down; PPI tells you how tightly those pixels are packed into its physical size. PPI helps explain sharpness, but it cannot predict it by itself: viewing distance and eyesight matter, and image quality also depends on factors such as brightness, color, reflections, and refresh rate.

What do resolution, pixels, and PPI mean?

Pixels and resolution

A pixel is a small addressable picture element. Text and images appear as patterns across a grid of pixels. A resolution written as width × height gives the grid’s dimensions in pixels. For example, 5120 × 2880 means 5,120 pixels across and 2,880 pixels down. Multiplying the two gives the total pixel count, but the width and height also show the grid’s shape.

Resolution does not specify the screen’s physical size. The same pixel dimensions can be used on panels of different sizes.

PPI: pixels per inch

PPI means pixels per inch. It describes how densely pixels are packed on the physical display: when the pixel dimensions stay the same, a smaller panel has a higher PPI than a larger one. Android’s documentation explains that screens with different densities can render raw-pixel-sized interface elements at different physical sizes, which is one reason apps use scalable layout units instead. How do you calculate a screen’s PPI?

For a rectangular display, use its native horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions and its physical diagonal in inches:

PPI ≈ √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²) ÷ diagonal inches

The square-root calculation finds the diagonal of the pixel grid; dividing by the screen’s physical diagonal gives an approximate density. Use the panel’s native resolution rather than a software-scaled desktop setting, which can change the size of interface elements without changing the physical pixel grid.

For Apple’s 27-inch Studio Display XDR, the published specification is 5120 × 2880 pixels and 218 PPI. The calculation gives a pixel-grid diagonal of about 5,874 pixels, or about 218 pixels per inch across 27 inches. Apple also lists 14.7 million pixels. These are manufacturer specifications and a calculation from them, not an independent sharpness test. Apple: Studio Display XDR technical specifications

Does a higher PPI make a screen sharper?

A higher PPI packs more pixels into each inch, which can make fine detail and edges appear smoother, particularly when the screen is viewed close up. But no single PPI figure guarantees that every person will see a screen as sharp or will be unable to distinguish its pixels. Viewing distance and the viewer’s eyesight affect whether the pixel structure is visible.

In a 2013 discussion of a 326-PPI phone display, Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate said people with 20/20 vision could not resolve individual pixels at viewing distances of 10.5 inches or more. That is a specific historical example, not a universal threshold for other screens, viewers, or distances. DisplayMate: The iPhone 5 Display Technology Shoot-Out

“Retina” is Apple’s branded display descriptor, not a universal scientific standard for when pixels become invisible. The available figures do not establish a PPI cutoff that applies to everyone.

What resolution and PPI do—and do not—tell you

Resolution describes the number and arrangement of pixels; PPI relates that grid to the panel’s physical size. Neither number alone describes all aspects of display quality. Apple lists properties such as color gamut, bit depth, brightness, reflectance, viewing angle, and refresh rate separately from pixel dimensions and PPI in its technical specifications. Consider the attributes that matter for your work or viewing conditions rather than ranking displays by resolution alone.

Two Apple examples show why resolution and PPI are separate measures. The 27-inch Studio Display XDR is specified at 5120 × 2880 and 218 PPI; Apple’s February 2020 overview of the 32-inch Pro Display XDR listed 6016 × 3384 and also 218 PPI. Different pixel grids and physical sizes can therefore produce the same stated density. The figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparisons of image quality. Why can interface text look different at the same resolution?

Operating systems use logical units so interface elements can remain a useful physical size across displays with different pixel densities. Those units are not the same as physical pixels, and their mapping depends on the platform and scaling settings.

These are platform-specific approaches, not interchangeable definitions. Changing scaling can make interface elements larger or smaller without changing a panel’s native pixel count.

How should you compare screens?

  • Check native pixel dimensions to understand the panel’s pixel grid, and distinguish native resolution from a supported signal or software setting.
  • Compare PPI alongside screen size rather than treating resolution as a measure of physical density.
  • Consider viewing distance and use when judging whether finer pixel density is likely to matter in practice.
  • Compare other display characteristics separately: color, brightness, contrast, reflections, viewing angle, and refresh rate can affect the experience but are not conveyed by resolution or PPI.
  • Check interface scaling if text or controls look too small or large; scaling changes their displayed size, not the screen’s native pixel grid.
