Those labels describe broad team contributions—not identical play styles—so the best role is the one whose heroes’ individual abilities and combat pace you enjoy.
What the three Marvel Rivals roles do
The official Marvel Rivals hero roster groups heroes as Vanguards, Duelists, or Strategists and lists each hero’s abilities. NetEase says its design process includes finding a hero’s fit among those classes before building abilities and mechanics around that choice. The roles are useful starting points, but a class label does not tell you exactly how every hero will feel to play.

How to choose a role
- Pick the contribution you most want to make. Choose frontline presence, damage, or team support as your starting point.
- Compare heroes within that role. Look at their ability descriptions and consider the kind of combat you prefer. For Duelists, for example, compare range and mobility; for Strategists, consider how each delivers support.
- Try more than one hero. A role groups heroes by broad team function, while their individual abilities shape the moment-to-moment experience.
- Reconsider after balance updates. If a patch changes a favorite hero’s kit, try the updated hero and other options in the role before deciding whether to switch.
Is one role best for beginners?
There is no established universal beginner pick among the three roles. The official materials cited here do not provide a role difficulty ranking or a role-by-role win-rate comparison. Start with the contribution that sounds most enjoyable, then judge the individual heroes you try rather than assuming a role is objectively easier or stronger.

Why role strength can change
Hero balance is patch-dependent. NetEase’s Marvel Rivals Version 20260911 Balance Post, published September 8, 2026, includes adjustments to heroes across all three classes and a shared change to Strategist energy generation. That post is a dated balance snapshot, not a permanent ranking of role strength. For the latest tuning, check the official patch notes when you play.
The cited official sources do not establish a statistical ranking of role strength or difficulty. Balance adjustments are not the same as role performance statistics such as win rates or pick rates.
