Providers bundle these functions differently. To understand what a particular arrangement actually does, identify the legal entity behind each service, where assets are held, how credit and collateral work, and who completes settlement.
What a crypto prime broker is—and is not
Prime brokerage describes a bundle of services for institutional clients such as funds, asset managers, and corporate treasuries. Rather than establish separate operational relationships for every task, a client may use a prime broker to connect trading with financing, collateral management, clearing or settlement, and custody arrangements. Ripple describes its bundle as trading, clearing, financing, and risk management through one counterparty; Coinbase and BitGo publish broader service descriptions that include custody-related or settlement functions.

The label does not establish which company legally provides each service. A prime broker may execute orders itself, route them to exchanges or other venues, arrange financing, coordinate post-trade processing, and connect to a separate custodian. Nor does the term mean that the provider is a central counterparty (CCP) that steps between buyers and sellers and guarantees performance. Ask what each entity does under the contract, rather than inferring its role from the product name.

What execution means
Execution is the process of arranging and carrying out an order. A prime service may provide access to multiple venues, electronic order handling, smart order routing, or an over-the-counter (OTC) desk for trades negotiated directly rather than placed on a public order book. The available venues, order controls, fees, pricing, and reporting depend on the provider and agreement.

Access to aggregated liquidity or routing across venues is not proof that a broker always obtains the best available price or execution. Evaluate the execution model and the information the provider supplies after a trade: for example, where an order was routed, how it was filled, and what costs applied.
What financing and margin mean
Financing can include a credit facility, borrowing against assets, or credit used to support trading. The client may pledge eligible assets as collateral, but the provider’s contract governs which assets qualify, how their value is calculated, and what fees or interest apply. Marketing descriptions alone do not establish a client’s borrowing limit, rate, or right to continue using credit.
Portfolio margin and cross-margining assess eligible positions or collateral together rather than treating every position as an entirely separate margin pool. Pooling can reduce the amount of collateral tied up compared with isolated treatment, but that outcome is conditional: eligibility rules, valuation methods, haircuts, margin calls, and liquidation rights determine the actual result. A shared pool can also connect exposures that a client might otherwise manage separately.

For a concrete example of how terms change over time, Kraken’s June 3, 2025 launch announcement described asset-backed lending and T+1 credit facilities. That is a dated description of its launch offer, not a guarantee of terms available to a particular client now. Coinbase’s current Prime product page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists 90+ assets available for financing and cross-margining; this is Coinbase’s product figure, not a market-wide count or a promise that every asset is eligible for every client.
What clearing and settlement mean
In broad service descriptions, clearing is the processing and management of obligations created by a trade. Settlement is the completion of the exchange of assets and cash. A prime broker may consolidate or coordinate post-trade activity across venues and products, but the word “clearing” does not by itself tell you whether the provider is a CCP, a settlement agent, or a service that processes obligations while another entity performs the legally decisive steps.
Ripple says it clears and finances trades executed elsewhere. That description does not establish that every prime broker guarantees settlement or assumes the same legal role. Before relying on a clearing or settlement service, establish which entity owes what to whom, where cash and tokens move, and whether an exchange, clearinghouse, custodian, or settlement agent participates.

Why custody is a separate structural decision
Custody concerns safeguarding and administering assets. It may be integrated into a prime-brokerage arrangement or provided by a distinct custodian connected to the broker. Even when a provider describes custody as integrated, that alone does not answer who legally holds the assets, how they are segregated, who controls transfers, or what happens if a broker, custodian, or venue fails.

It also says those assets are legally segregated but operationally commingled in omnibus wallets. Coinbase contrasts that portfolio with Prime Vault, a custody-only option in which assets must be swept before trading. These are Coinbase’s descriptions of its own configurations; other providers may use different legal and wallet structures.
Ripple says Ripple Prime does not itself provide custody and identifies Ripple Custody as a separate product; it says tri-party custody can be part of an arrangement. This illustrates why “prime brokerage” should not be treated as synonymous with “the broker holds the assets.”

How published provider offerings differ
The following examples describe provider-published service scope, not independent quality assessments or recommendations. Availability depends on the client, product, jurisdiction, and contract.
| Provider | Published service description | Structural distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Prime | Execution, financing, custody, futures, and staking through an institutional platform. | Coinbase separately describes Prime Custody and Prime Vault, which have different custody and trading arrangements. |
| Kraken Prime | Trading, custody, and financing; its current product page describes multi-venue execution, smart order routing, and borrowing against custody assets. | Kraken’s June 3, 2025 launch announcement is a dated description of launch features, while its product page describes its current published offering. |
| Ripple Prime | Multi-asset clearing and financing. | Ripple says custody is a separate product. Its November 3, 2025 announcement describes U.S. OTC spot capabilities and cross-margining with other digital-asset exposures. |
| BitGo Prime | Trading, financing, collateral management, settlement, and access to regulated custody; electronic and OTC execution are described. | Its published scope explicitly names collateral management and settlement as components of the service bundle. |
Coinbase’s current Prime product page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists 275+ tradeable assets and 40 futures contracts. Kraken’s June 3, 2025 launch announcement claimed access to over 20 venues and liquidity representing over 90% of the digital-asset market. Those Kraken figures are the company’s launch-announcement claims, not independently verified measurements; neither provider’s figures should be read as market-wide statistics.

- Execution: Which markets and venues are available to your entity and in your jurisdiction? Is execution electronic, OTC, agency, or another model? What routing controls, order records, and post-trade reports will you receive?
- Financing: Is credit actually offered to your client entity? Which assets are eligible, how are rates and fees set, and what events trigger a margin call, default, or liquidation?
- Margin and collateral: Which positions can be cross-margined? Who controls the collateral, how are it and the positions valued, what haircuts apply, and how can terms change?
- Custody: Name the legal custodian and any sub-custodians. Determine the asset-segregation and wallet model, transfer permissions, withdrawal process, and treatment of assets if the broker, custodian, or venue fails.
- Clearing and settlement: Identify the entity that legally clears and settles each trade, and the entity holding each cash or asset balance. Clarify whether “clearing” means post-trade processing, access to a clearinghouse, or another contractual function.
- Operations and concentration: Compare onboarding, permissions, reporting, service coverage, and contingency arrangements with the operational simplicity of one relationship. A consolidated setup can reduce coordination work, but it also makes the client more dependent on the provider and its connected parties.
- Jurisdiction and legal entity: Verify the exact entity, product, and permissions relevant to your location. A company-wide platform description does not establish that every product has the same regulatory status in every jurisdiction.
Regulatory status depends on the entity and activity
In a May 7, 2025 clarification, the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said national banks and federal savings associations may buy and sell assets held in custody at a customer’s direction and may outsource bank-permissible crypto-asset activities, including custody and execution, subject to appropriate third-party risk management. The OCC also said custody activities must be conducted safely and soundly and in compliance with applicable law. This is a statement about specified U.S. banking institutions and activities—not blanket approval of all prime brokers, tokens, credit products, or jurisdictions.
Provider statements about their own entities are likewise specific. Coinbase’s product page identifies Coinbase Custody Trust Company as a New York limited-purpose trust company and Coinbase Financial Markets as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant offering futures and cleared swaps. Confirm current permissions and contractual terms for the exact service and legal entity under consideration.
