But current reviews do not establish a general increase in farm yields caused specifically by biodegradable nanoparticles. Their value depends on the formulation, crop and pest or nutrient target, and the conditions in which they are used.
What biodegradable nanoparticles do in agriculture
Agricultural nanotechnology includes several different approaches, such as nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanobiosensors and environmental remediation. A product’s use of nanotechnology does not, by itself, mean it is biodegradable: that property must be established for the particular material or carrier.

Some formulations use biopolymers such as chitosan, alginate or starch as carriers. Researchers investigate whether these materials can protect an active ingredient and control how or where it is released. In principle, better delivery could help an ingredient remain stable or reach its target more effectively. Those are formulation goals, not guarantees of higher yields, lower pesticide use or reduced environmental impact.

Researchers also examine how these formulations move through plants and soils and interact with microbes, wildlife and people. These are active areas of investigation rather than proof that every formulation is safe or effective in routine farm use.

Can biodegradable nanoparticles increase crop yields?
They might contribute to better agricultural performance if a formulation improves delivery of a needed nutrient or pest-control ingredient under the conditions where it is applied. However, improved delivery or measured efficacy is not the same as a demonstrated increase in crop yield. The reviews cited here do not establish a general field yield gain attributable specifically to biodegradable nanoparticles.
A 2018 critical analysis by Kah and colleagues in Nature Nanotechnology examined 78 published papers on nano-agrochemicals and reported a median efficacy gain of about 20–30% relative to conventional analogues. That is a broad comparison across nano-agrochemicals, not a result specific to biodegradable nanoparticles, and it is not a measured farm-yield increase. The authors also identified shortcomings in nano-specific quality controls and noted that, at the time, the literature lacked a comprehensive field-condition study assessing both efficacy and environmental impact.
The distinction matters when interpreting an experiment: an ingredient that performs better in a laboratory or greenhouse, or a formulation that improves a measure of efficacy, does not by itself show that farmers will harvest more. Yield claims require field evidence for the crop, application, comparator and conditions in question.

- Complete 25-Piece Seed Starting Set: Includes 25 peat pots and 25 plant labels for organizing different seeds and seedlings. The compact quantity is ideal for small home gardens, balcony planting, apartment gardening and beginner seed-starting projects
- 3.1 Inch Pots for Small-Batch Growing: Each seed starter pot provides practical space for starting a manageable number of flowers, herbs and vegetables without purchasing an oversized bulk pack. Suitable for seasonal planting and small spring gardening projects
- Drainage Holes for Water Management: Pre-made drainage holes help excess water flow out of the nursery pots, supporting a balanced growing environment for developing seedlings while making daily watering easier for new gardeners
- Plantable Pots for Easy Transplanting: Place the seedling pot directly into a larger container or garden soil when the plant is ready to move. The plantable design helps reduce disturbance to delicate young roots during transplanting
- Made for Home and Small-Space Gardening: Ideal for kitchen windowsills, balconies, patios, small greenhouses and outdoor garden beds. A practical seed starting kit for beginners, apartment gardeners and anyone growing a small selection of herbs, flowers or vegetables
Why results can vary from one farm or formulation to another
Nanoparticle stability and performance can change with the environment. A 2026 review by Wang and colleagues in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment identifies soil texture, pH and ionic strength as factors that can influence stability. Material characteristics and interactions with soil constituents can also affect a formulation’s efficiency and fate.
That means the same formulation may not behave identically in different soils or conditions. The relevant question is not simply whether a product is “nano” or “biodegradable,” but whether its delivery and release behavior has been tested for the intended crop, target and setting.
How to assess an agricultural nanoparticle claim
Before treating a claimed benefit as useful evidence for a farm decision, check what was actually tested:

- Material and biodegradability: Is the carrier identified, and is biodegradability established for that specific formulation?
- Target and outcome: Was the test about nutrient delivery, pest control, another efficacy measure or harvested yield? These outcomes are not interchangeable.
- Evidence setting: Was the work conducted in a laboratory, greenhouse or field? Field evidence is needed to support claims about performance under farming conditions.
- Comparator and controls: What conventional treatment or untreated control was used, and was the comparison appropriate to the claim?
- Characterization: Does the study report the material and nano-specific quality controls needed to interpret what was applied?
- Environmental effects: Does it examine environmental fate and possible effects on soil organisms, microbial communities or other non-target species?
These checks help distinguish a promising formulation result from evidence that is strong enough to support a claim about production or environmental benefit.
Are nanoparticle fertilizers safe for soil?
“Nanoparticle fertilizer” does not describe one material with one environmental profile. Safety depends on the formulation, its behavior in the soil and its interactions with soil constituents and organisms. Reviews identify environmental fate and interactions with microbes, plants and people as areas that need careful assessment; biodegradability alone does not establish that a formulation has no harmful effects.
A responsible evaluation therefore looks at both intended performance and what happens to the material after application. It should consider non-target effects and relevant soil conditions, rather than assuming that a carrier’s biological origin or degradability makes every use harmless.

Are nano-fertilizers already used routinely on farms?
Wang and colleagues’ 2026 review estimates that nano-agrochemicals account for less than 1% of the global agrochemical market. This is an estimate for the broader nano-agrochemical market, not a measure of biodegradable formulations, adoption by farmers or agronomic performance. It indicates that research potential should not be confused with routine commercial use.
For now, the most defensible view is that biodegradable carriers are a research and development category with potential applications in nutrient and biopesticide delivery. Claims about yield gains, safety or farm readiness need to be judged formulation by formulation and supported by evidence appropriate to those claims.
