What Counts Toward 100% Completion in Modern Video Games?

There is no universal industry definition of “100% completion.” In most games, the authoritative answer is the title’s own statistics, progress, compendium, or completion menu. That counter usually measures a selected and sometimes weighted subset of content, not every activity in the game. Treat platform achievements or trophies and a personal “everything” checklist as separate completion goals.

What “100% complete” can mean

Players commonly use the same phrase for three different records. Confusing them is why a game can display 100% while you still have missions, challenges, cosmetics, or online activities left.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Completion standard Authority What it measures
In-game 100% The game’s progress, statistics, compendium, or completion screen The categories and items the developer selected for that counter, often with category-specific weighting
Platform completion Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or another platform’s achievement/trophy set Every currently required achievement or trophy in the relevant set, subject to that platform’s rules
Personal “everything” goal Your own item-level checklist Any optional, cosmetic, seasonal, online, collectible, challenge, or other content you decide to include

Choose the standard before you start. “I want the in-game 100%” is a different project from “I want every trophy” or “I want to see every piece of content.” A guide can be correct for one standard and misleading for another.

Start with the game’s own tracker

Open the menu named Progress, Statistics, Completion, Compendium, or something similar. Copy the category names and the displayed totals into your notes. Those labels are the closest thing to an official definition for that title and version.

Read categories, not just the headline percentage

A 62% total may combine several categories with different weights. One game can require every main mission but only a selection of side activities; another can count discoveries, upgrades, or specific challenges instead. A visible list of 100 collectibles does not prove that all 100 affect the percentage.

Look for category totals such as “12 of 15,” completion bars, or entries marked complete. If the menu exposes only a percentage, compare it with the game’s item lists and a current, title-specific checklist rather than assuming an even one-item-one-percent calculation.

Record the threshold and version

Write down the exact threshold shown by the game, your platform, edition, and patch version. Updates can add activities, alter requirements, or change whether downloadable and seasonal content appears in the same tracker. A save made on one version can therefore report a different total from a new save on another.

Content that commonly counts

The following categories appear frequently, but none is universal. Confirm each one in the title’s tracker.

  • Main missions: story chapters, required finales, or designated campaign objectives.
  • Named side missions: quest chains that the game treats as a formal series, rather than every incidental conversation.
  • Selected collectibles: named sets such as letters, artifacts, signal points, or map markers. The counter may require only a defined subset.
  • Activities and pastimes: races, sports, minigames, target ranges, or other activities, sometimes at a bronze or minimum result rather than the highest score.
  • Challenges and upgrades: rank milestones, equipment improvements, skill trees, or crafting objectives when listed by the progress menu.
  • Discoveries and locations: named areas, viewpoints, landmarks, or entries in a compendium.
  • Miscellaneous tasks: property purchases, vehicle purchases, friend or companion activities, stunts, or one-off interactions specifically named by the tracker.

Conversely, games often leave out repeatable grinding, every cosmetic variation, optional dialogue, maximum scores, unused map icons, and activities available only in a separate online mode. “Available in the game” is not the same as “included in the completion formula.”

Achievements and trophies are a separate record

Platform achievements and trophies are platform records, not a universal translation of the game’s internal meter. Unlocking every one is a legitimate completion goal, but it does not automatically mean the in-game counter reaches 100%, and reaching the in-game counter does not automatically unlock every platform award.

Steam’s set rules

Steamworks states that “Completion is tracked per set.” A set is complete when you unlock every achievement in that set that is still available. Its documentation also says that archived achievements you have not unlocked are not required, and that a downloadable-content set counts only when you own that DLC. A set that was already complete remains complete if achievements are added later. Read the current rules in Steamworks achievement documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are Steam’s platform rules. They do not define what the game’s own percentage must include, and they do not make an archived, timed, or DLC objective part of every player’s base-game target.

Xbox achievement criteria

Microsoft’s Xbox certification requirements say that “All achievements unlock according to their criteria” and that “All achievements represent a thorough exploration of or engagement with game content.” That language sets quality and unlock expectations for achievements; it does not claim that an achievement list contains every in-game objective. The same documentation describes a base-game launch allowance of 1,000 gamerscore spread across 10 to 100 achievements, which is a certification limit rather than a completion definition. See the Xbox certification requirements.

PlayStation and other platforms

Other platforms similarly maintain their own trophy or achievement lists. Check whether you are viewing the base-game list, an expansion list, a remaster’s separate list, or an online title’s list. A platform may show a complete base set while additional DLC sets remain unfinished, or may track a remaster as a new set even when the underlying game is familiar.

DLC, updates, online modes, and archived content

Scope is the most common source of disagreement. Label every item before treating it as required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Scope label Question to answer How to record it
Base game Does the original release’s tracker or achievement set include this item? Keep it in the base-game column.
Owned DLC Is the expansion installed or owned, and does it have its own set or tracker? List the DLC name and ownership requirement separately.
Free update Did a patch add missions, collectibles, or achievements to an existing set? Note the patch or version that introduced it.
Seasonal or timed Is the objective available only during a date-limited event? Record the event dates and whether it can return.
Online-only Does it require multiplayer, an account, servers, or another player? Mark the server and cooperation dependency.
Archived or retired Can the objective still be unlocked, or is it preserved only as history? Mark it archived and apply the platform’s current completion rule.

Do not silently combine these scopes. A guide that says “all achievements” may mean the base list only, while a player may mean every expansion and seasonal list. Server shutdowns and retired events can also make a personal “everything ever released” goal impossible even when the current in-game tracker is complete.

Why a game can show 100% with things left to do

The percentage is weighted

Developers may assign different values to categories. Completing a small, high-weight category can finish the meter while many low-weight activities remain visible elsewhere in the world.

The tracker uses a selected subset

A game may count 20 named side missions but ignore unrelated errands, or require a defined selection of random events rather than every possible spawn. The uncounted content remains playable without affecting the official percentage.

Online and expansion content is outside the base tracker

Separate online progression, later expansions, and seasonal activities may use their own menus or achievement sets. A base-game save can therefore be complete while those additional scopes are unfinished.

“100%” is not the same as every maximum result

Some trackers require participation or a minimum medal, not a perfect score. A completion counter can be satisfied at bronze level while gold times, leaderboard records, or higher difficulty challenges remain optional.

Case study: Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V demonstrates why the title’s own target must be separated from an everything checklist. PowerPyx reports that its official 100% target uses Franklin’s Stranger & Freaks missions, a selected number of random events, specified collectibles and stunts, bronze-level pastime results, properties, and other listed tasks. Gold medals in story missions are not required for that counter.

A September 5, 2026 checklist from HowToPlayHub describes the title-specific target as 69 story missions, 20 Stranger & Freaks missions, 42 hobbies and pastimes, 14 random events, specified collectible and stunt subsets, properties, a vehicle purchase, friend activities, and one-off tasks. Those figures describe that checklist’s interpretation of the current target; edition and version differences mean you should verify the live tracker or a current guide for your platform before treating the numbers as universal.

The example illustrates three separate outcomes: completing the in-game 100% list, earning every platform achievement (which may include objectives outside that list), and completing every optional activity or collectible you personally care about.

A reliable method for planning your own completion run

  1. Choose the authority. Decide whether the finish line is the in-game counter, a platform set, or a personal everything list.
  2. Copy the in-game categories. Open the progress, statistics, compendium, or completion menu and write each category exactly as displayed.
  3. Find the threshold. Record required totals, medal levels, weighted bars, and any subcategories. Do not infer requirements from map icons alone.
  4. Build an achievement column. Add every relevant trophy or achievement, then mark missable, online-only, timed, DLC, and archived entries.
  5. Separate scopes. Use distinct sections for base game, owned expansions, free updates, seasonal content, and online modes.
  6. Track items individually. Record the mission, collectible, activity, or challenge name and its location or menu source. A percentage alone cannot tell you what remains.
  7. Mark missables before starting. Note decisions, chapters, difficulty settings, or quest windows that can permanently block an item. Keep a backup save before those points.
  8. Update for patches. Add the version, platform, and edition to your checklist. Recheck the achievement list and in-game categories after major updates.
  9. Verify the finish. Confirm the game’s own 100% display, then separately confirm platform completion and your personal optional list.

How to handle missables and online requirements

Missable objectives

Mark a missable before you enter the relevant chapter or make the relevant choice. Follow a chapter-order checklist, create a manual save, and verify the unlock immediately when the game provides feedback. If you miss it, determine whether chapter replay, new game plus, or a second save can satisfy it; some games count replay results while others require a fresh run.

Online-only objectives

Check account, subscription, matchmaking, and server requirements before committing to an “everything” goal. Record whether solo private sessions work, whether another player is required, and whether the objective is tied to a live event. Treat server-dependent content as a separate scope so an unavailable service does not make the base-game result ambiguous.

Timed and archived objectives

Capture the event name and end date in your notes. If a platform archives an objective, apply that platform’s rule rather than deleting the historical entry from your personal list. Steam, for example, does not require an archived achievement that you have not unlocked when determining set completion.

How to use a guide without losing the definition

Choose a title-specific checklist that identifies achievements or milestones, missables, walkthrough steps, and reference lists. The useful guides start from the game’s own menus, then expose details the counter omits, such as item locations and order dependencies.

  • Confirm the guide’s platform, edition, region, and patch date.
  • Check whether it covers the base game, owned DLC, online mode, and seasonal content.
  • Compare its category names with your in-game tracker before following its route.
  • Use an item-level checklist, not a single percentage copied from another player’s save.

When a guide and the tracker disagree, first check scope and version. A guide may include every collectible while the official meter counts only a subset, or it may include an expansion that your edition does not own.

What to call your result

Use precise labels in your notes, screenshots, and completion posts:

  • Official in-game 100%: the title’s displayed completion target is satisfied.
  • Base-game platform complete: every currently required achievement or trophy in the base set is unlocked.
  • All owned DLC complete: the expansion sets you own are complete.
  • Everything checklist complete: your personal definition, including optional or cosmetic items, is finished.

These labels prevent a completed in-game meter from being mistaken for every trophy, and prevent a full trophy set from being presented as proof that every optional activity was completed.
