There is no single, officially established rarest block in Minecraft: the answer changes depending on whether you mean a block that generates naturally, a collectible a Survival player can obtain, or a block that is rare but unavailable in Survival. For natural generation, deepslate emerald ore is a strong candidate; for a scarce collectible, Minecraft calls the Dragon Egg “arguably the rarest item in the game.”
Which block is rarest to find naturally?
Deepslate emerald ore is a defensible answer if you mean a naturally generated block. Emerald ore generates only in mountainous biomes, and Minecraft’s Java 1.18 release notes say emerald ore below height 0 is “very rare.” When emerald ore generates in deepslate, it appears as the deepslate variant. The notes establish the biome and depth constraints, but do not give a spawn probability or rank it against every other block. Minecraft’s Java 1.18 release notes and Bedrock 1.17 notes on deepslate ore variants support these details.

The Dragon Egg is a strong answer if you mean a scarce collectible rather than a naturally generating ore. Minecraft’s October 2025 feature article describes it as “arguably the rarest item in the game.” It says Java Edition yields one, while Bedrock Edition can yield two by defeating the Ender Dragon twice. Those edition-specific counts describe how many eggs can be acquired through that method, not a statistical ranking of all blocks. Minecraft’s Dragon Egg article gives the acquisition details.
What about reinforced deepslate?
Reinforced deepslate is associated with ancient cities, but Java 1.19 release notes state that it cannot be obtained in Survival. That makes it a different kind of rarity: an unusual block that players cannot collect through ordinary Survival play. It should not be treated as the answer to a question about the rarest Survival-findable block. The Java 1.19 release notes document its Survival availability.

How to interpret “rarest”
| Meaning of rarest | Best-supported answer | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Naturally generated block | Deepslate emerald ore | Emerald ore is limited to mountainous biomes and is very rare below height 0; no comparable probability or universal ranking is stated in the cited official notes. |
| Scarce collectible | Dragon Egg | Minecraft describes it as arguably the rarest item; the stated yield is one in Java Edition and up to two in Bedrock Edition after two Ender Dragon defeats. |
| Unobtainable in Survival | Reinforced deepslate | Java 1.19 notes say it is found in ancient cities and cannot be obtained in Survival. |
These categories are not interchangeable: natural generation concerns where a block appears, collectible rarity concerns whether and how it can be acquired, and Survival availability excludes blocks that cannot be collected that way. The official sources cited here do not publish a block-by-block statistical ranking, so claims that one block is definitively rarest across editions, versions and acquisition methods go beyond what they establish.
