To make podzol in Minecraft, place four spruce saplings in a 2×2 square and let them grow into a large spruce tree. Podzol generates around the tree’s base. Bone meal can speed up growth, but you do not need it. This method is described in the Minecraft tree-farming tutorial.
Grow a large spruce tree to make podzol
- Get four spruce saplings.
- Plant them in adjacent blocks, forming a 2×2 square.
- Give the saplings room to grow into a large spruce. Use bone meal if you want to speed up growth; it is optional.
- After the tree grows, look around its base for the generated podzol. The tree also provides spruce wood.
The method and its podzol effect are described in the mushroom-farming tutorial and the tree-farming tutorial. The exact patch shape can vary by edition and version, so do not rely on a fixed footprint.

If you would rather collect existing podzol, look in old-growth taiga biomes; Minecraft Help describes old-growth spruce taiga as having podzol and coarse dirt, with giant spruce trees characteristic of the biome. A community reference also lists bamboo jungle as a natural generation location. See Minecraft Help’s biome guide and the Podzol reference.
To relocate naturally generated podzol intact, mine it with a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, it drops as dirt, according to the Podzol reference.

Use podzol for mushrooms
Podzol allows mushrooms to be placed regardless of light level, which can help when growing huge mushrooms. A large spruce can therefore serve both as a source of podzol and as part of a mushroom-growing setup, as described in the mushroom-farming tutorial.
