Hydrogen production efficiency in an organic photocatalyst depends on a chain of steps: the material must absorb useful light, generate charges, keep electrons and holes from recombining, transport electrons to reactive sites, and form hydrogen there. Reaction conditions and measurement methods affect the result too. A high hydrogen-production rate in one setup does not, on its own, prove that a material is intrinsically more efficient than another.
Efficiency depends on the whole light-to-hydrogen pathway
Organic photocatalysts include several distinct material families, such as polymeric carbon nitride, linear and conjugated polymers, porous polymers, small molecules, covalent triazine frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. Their structures and electronic properties differ, so there is no single material property that determines performance across all of them.

For hydrogen to form, incident photons must be absorbed and create excited charges. Those charges must separate and move through the material without recombining; electrons must then reach a surface reaction site where they can contribute to hydrogen evolution. Loss at any stage can limit the final output. Improving light absorption alone, for example, may not raise hydrogen production if charge recombination or surface reaction kinetics remain the bottleneck.

What controls each stage?
Light absorption
The material’s structure determines which wavelengths it absorbs and how strongly. Only absorbed photons can drive the photocatalytic process, so the useful light spectrum matters alongside the amount of catalyst and how it is dispersed or arranged. More catalyst does not necessarily mean a proportionally larger output: the reactor’s light path and the fraction of incident light reaching active material also matter.

Charge generation, separation, and transport
After absorption, excited charges must avoid recombination and reach reactive sites. Molecular structure, crystallinity, defects, morphology, and heterostructure design can influence charge generation, separation, and transport. Their effects depend on the particular material and system; none is a universal predictor of higher hydrogen production.
Surface hydrogen-evolution chemistry
Electrons that reach the surface still need to take part in hydrogen formation. Surface sites and cocatalysts can affect the reaction kinetics. Results also depend on whether hydrogen is produced in a donor-assisted half-reaction or through overall water splitting. A sacrificial donor can consume photogenerated holes and facilitate hydrogen evolution, but activity measured with a donor is evidence for that donor-assisted system—not, by itself, proof of overall water splitting.

Reaction conditions and durability
The reaction medium, pH, temperature, co-existing ions, catalyst dispersion, and concentrations of additives can affect activity and stability. A reported result therefore belongs to the full reaction recipe, not just to the photocatalyst name. Stability claims also need their conditions: the medium, illumination, duration, and presence or absence of a donor can all matter. A 2023 review notes degradation or corrosion concerns in some systems when sacrificial agents are absent.
Why a hydrogen-production rate is not enough
A volume or molar rate is tied to the amount of catalyst, reactor geometry, light path and illumination, reaction medium, and test duration. It is useful for describing output under stated conditions, but it does not normalize for the photons available or establish that two studies tested comparable systems.

For a comparison, look for a wavelength-specific apparent or external quantum efficiency (AQE/EQE) under monochromatic illumination, or solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH) where a solar-driven overall water-splitting result is established. These metrics answer different questions: quantum efficiency relates hydrogen production to incident or absorbed photons under specified illumination, while STH expresses conversion of solar energy to hydrogen for overall water splitting. The metric must be reported with enough test detail to interpret it.
A 2022 review of polymer nanoparticle photocatalysts likewise cautions that measured rates depend on reaction conditions, photocatalyst and cocatalyst state, reactor type, and medium, and recommends established quantum-yield and STH measures for comparison. Do not compare donor-assisted half-reaction activity directly with overall water-splitting performance.

How to interpret published headline efficiencies
A 2023 EES Catalysis review reports an STH figure of 1.16% for a state-of-the-art polymeric carbon nitride system. The same review reports 0.40% as the highest documented STH figure for a covalent organic framework system in its coverage. These are review-reported figures, not results from a head-to-head controlled comparison; differences in testing conditions mean they should not be treated as a direct ranking of the two material families.

When comparing any two reports, check their absorption range and wavelength-specific quantum efficiency, charge separation and transport, surface chemistry and cocatalyst dependence, use of a sacrificial donor versus overall water splitting, reactor and illumination conditions, and stability under the stated test conditions. Without protocol-matched conditions, a universal ranking across organic photocatalyst families is not established.
