AI onboarding can speed up repeatable preparation work; it does not remove a wealth manager’s responsibility for due diligence or risk decisions. In practice, the useful comparison is between a largely manual process and a workflow in which software collects and cross-checks information, surfaces gaps, and routes cases for accountable staff review. Published speed and savings claims vary in scope and evidence quality, so firms should evaluate the whole client and control process—not assume a headline percentage will apply to them.
What traditional wealth-management onboarding involves
Opening a wealth-management account can involve collecting and validating identity and financial documents, completing know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money-laundering (AML) checks, understanding source of wealth, assessing risk profile and investment objectives, obtaining signatures, and provisioning the account. The exact sequence and evidence required vary with the client, service and jurisdiction.

KPMG identifies document volume, signature collection, disconnected systems, legacy technology and manual processes as potential sources of delay in wealth onboarding (KPMG, “Agentic AI for wealth management,” 2025). The Hong Kong Private Wealth Management Report 2025 likewise summarizes source-of-wealth verification, documentation delays, complex requirements and manual processes as challenges reported by private-wealth firms (Hong Kong Private Wealth Management Association and KPMG, report summary).
Manual work is not automatically waste: complex, high-risk or ambiguous cases may call for expert judgment and a documented decision trail. The aim of automation is to reduce avoidable repetition while preserving the checks and decisions that protect clients and the firm.

What AI can assist with—and what remains accountable work
KPMG describes potential AI assistance with gathering and verifying KYC information, cross-referencing records, integrating client data across systems, processing documents and preparing risk profiles. These functions can help staff assemble a clearer case; they do not, by themselves, establish that the information is correct or that a client should be accepted.
Automate preparation, not accountability
Deutsche Bank Private Bank describes a source-of-wealth workflow that analyzes client documents and approved external sources, identifies gaps or inconsistencies, and prepares material for human review. The bank says the solution went live in its Singapore and Hong Kong booking centres at the beginning of September 2026, with broader rollout planned (Deutsche Bank Private Bank announcement, accessed October 4, 2026). This is a bank-reported deployment and description of its own control model, not independent proof that every AI system provides adequate oversight.
The distinction is important: software may organize evidence and flag issues, while staff remain responsible for evaluating exceptions, applying the firm’s policies and owning final risk decisions. Deutsche Bank COO Yiping Li described the principle this way: “while tasks can be automated, accountability remains with our people.” That statement expresses the bank’s approach; firms assessing a system should verify how its controls work in practice.

Available figures describe different things, use different evidence types and should not be treated as comparable benchmarks.
| Claim | What it represents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 30%–40% lower onboarding costs | KPMG LLP’s 2025 estimate, based on the authors’ experience and client work involving intelligent automation and other technologies. | An estimate, not a measured result from a named wealth-onboarding deployment. |
| 50% faster onboarding | KPMG LLP’s 2025 growth projection estimate. | A projection, not a controlled before-and-after trial. |
| Approximately 30% more clients in 2026 than in 2025 | Deutsche Bank Private Bank’s forecast for its Emerging Markets coverage region. | A bank forecast, not a realized outcome or evidence that AI alone would cause the expected change. |
| Up to 70%–80% less onboarding time | Moody’s case-study account of Penguin Securities’ Maxsight implementation and automated identity verification and screening. | A vendor-published, customer-specific outcome, not an independent market benchmark. |
These numbers do not share a baseline, measurement method, geography or definition of “onboarding time.” In particular, a shorter software processing time does not necessarily mean a shorter end-to-end client wait if documents are missing, approvals queue up or another system remains a bottleneck.
Examples show different kinds of evidence
Deutsche Bank: a bank-announced source-of-wealth workflow
The bank’s announcement describes research, documentation and preparation using information in client cases and approved external sources, followed by human review. Its stated Singapore and Hong Kong launch scope and planned broader rollout describe one institution’s deployment; they do not establish that the same process or result applies elsewhere.
Penguin Securities: a vendor-published case study
Moody’s says Penguin Securities implemented Maxsight for digital onboarding, integrating data providers and internal systems and automating screening, document review and approval workflows. Moody’s reports implementation in under three months and an onboarding-time reduction of up to 70%–80%. The vendor says the implementation configured risk thresholds, jurisdictions, customer types, profiles and workflows. These are claims about that customer case, not a universal implementation timeline or expected result (Moody’s, “Case studies,” accessed October 4, 2026).
Hong Kong sector context
The Hong Kong Private Wealth Management Report 2025 identifies source-of-wealth verification and documentation among onboarding challenges reported by firms, and names account opening/onboarding as an area expected to be affected by AI. Those summary findings provide sector context, not a quantified forecast of time or cost reductions for an individual firm.

Assess AI-assisted and traditional workflows against the same case types, service scope and compliance requirements. A pilot or procurement review should include more than the average time to open an uncomplicated account.
- Time and throughput: measure median and long-tail completion times, first-pass completion and backlog. Separate time clients spend waiting from staff processing time.
- Client effort: track repeat requests for documents, abandonment, accessibility and whether clients can reach a person for help.
- Evidence quality: examine extraction accuracy, traceability to source documents, gap detection and whether reviewers can understand why a case was flagged.
- Exceptions and human review: set escalation thresholds and name who owns the final risk decision. Confirm that reviewers can challenge or correct system outputs.
- Integration and policy fit: check compatibility with the firm’s CRM, document-management tools, KYC data providers and risk policies. A workflow that does not fit existing systems may shift rather than remove manual work.
- Governance and jurisdiction: review approved data sources, privacy controls, audit records and access management, and confirm the process adapts to local requirements. There is no single global legal standard established by these examples; obtain jurisdiction-specific compliance review.
Which approach fits a given case?
Traditional, staff-led onboarding may remain appropriate where the case is unusual, evidence is ambiguous or the firm needs substantial personal guidance. AI assistance is most defensible when it makes repeatable document and data preparation more consistent without obscuring the evidence or decision path.
For many firms, the practical choice is not all-manual versus fully automated. It is where to use automation in a controlled workflow, which cases must be escalated, and how staff can review and correct what the system prepares. A credible comparison measures client effort and control quality alongside speed, using the firm’s own baseline and clearly defined case outcomes.
