Yes. Android malware can steal banking details even when it is installed from outside Google Play. Google describes malware that impersonates trusted sources to collect credentials—including banking credentials—and identifies some sensitive permissions abused in financial fraud. Sideloading alone does not make an app malicious, and a permission request by itself is not proof of wrongdoing.
How an app installed outside Google Play can steal banking details
Google calls apps installed directly from sources such as browsers, messaging apps, and file managers “Internet-sideloading sources.” The installation route is separate from what an app does: a sideloaded app might be legitimate, but malicious apps can use that route too.

Google’s malware taxonomy describes phishing code that impersonates a trusted source, asks for credentials or billing information, and sends that information to a third party. Banking credentials are among the common targets. It also describes trojans that can look benign while concealing harmful behavior. These are recognized forms of credential theft; they do not mean every app outside the store can access a banking app’s data automatically.
The risk depends on the app, device, Android version, permissions granted, and available protections. Android’s security model should not be treated as absent just because an app was sideloaded.

Why certain permissions are a warning sign
Google identifies RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, notification-listener access, and Accessibility access as permissions frequently abused in financial fraud. They can expose sensitive activity or enable harmful actions, which is why an app from a web page or message deserves extra scrutiny when it asks for them.
Context matters. An app may have a legitimate reason to request a sensitive permission, and the request alone does not establish malicious intent. Be wary when the permission is unrelated to the app’s stated purpose, or when someone pressures you to grant it.

What Google Play Protect can—and cannot—do
On Android devices with Google Play services, Google says Play Protect scans apps regardless of where they were downloaded. It can check an unknown app during installation and warn about or block threats it detects. Google recommends leaving it enabled.

Google also says enhanced fraud protections can block installation from internet-sideloading sources when an app declares certain sensitive permissions. That block is available in select markets, not universally. Protection availability and behavior can vary by device, Android version, Google Play services, and region. Scanning and warnings reduce risk; they are not a guarantee that every harmful app will be detected.

What Google’s reported figures show
Google’s figures illustrate why off-store threats receive attention, but they are company-reported operational metrics—not estimates of an individual user’s chance of infection. The installation statistic below applies to studied malware families, not to all sideloaded apps.

How to reduce the risk
- Keep Play Protect enabled. Review its warnings and follow scan prompts rather than dismissing them without checking.
- Use a trusted source. Prefer an official app store or the publisher’s verified channel. Do not install an app because a caller, message, or pop-up creates urgency. Google reports that scammers may tell people on calls to disable Play Protect before installing a malicious sideloaded app.
- Check permission requests before approving them. Pause if a newly installed app—especially one from a website or message—asks for SMS, notification-listener, or Accessibility access. Grant it only when the app’s function clearly needs it.
Google’s Play Protect guidance gives this user-facing warning: “This app can request access to sensitive data. This can increase the risk of identity theft or financial fraud.” Treat it as a reason to stop and assess the app and its permissions, not as proof that every app displaying a warning is malware.

If you suspect an app is malicious
Stop using the app and contact your bank through its official app or a phone number you already know is official. Follow the bank’s advice for securing your account; the appropriate response can depend on what information or access may have been exposed.
