To search the words inside several open web pages, use an extension that explicitly searches page content. Browser features such as Firefox Search tabs and Microsoft Edge Tab Search are designed to find tabs, not to search the full text of every open page. If you only need to locate a tab by its title, start with the browser’s built-in search instead.
First decide what you want to search
- Find a tab: Search tab titles or other tab details to reopen the right page.
- Find words on pages: Search the body text of multiple open pages for a phrase or term. This requires a feature that explicitly indexes or scans page content.
The distinction matters: a tab-search box may return a page because its title matches your query, without finding words that appear only in the page itself.
Find an open tab with built-in browser search
Firefox
Open the tab overview and select Search tabs, or type % followed by a search term in the address bar. Mozilla documents this as a way to search open tabs by their identifying information, not as full-text search across page content. See Mozilla Support’s Search open tabs in Firefox.
Microsoft Edge
Open Tab Search and enter a keyword to locate a tab. Microsoft says the feature can search open tabs across multiple Edge windows and includes recently closed tabs. Its feature description does not say it searches the text inside pages, so use it to find tabs rather than to look up a phrase within their contents. See Microsoft’s Tab search page.

Search page text across tabs with an extension
For cross-tab page-text search, choose an extension whose listing specifically says it searches tab content. Marketplace descriptions advertise several approaches, but those descriptions are not independent tests and do not establish an overall best extension.

These are advertised capabilities in the respective store listings, not comparative performance findings. Extensions may differ in whether they inspect only active tabs or also discarded or sleeping tabs, whether they cover one window or several, and whether they show snippets or take you to a match.

Choose an extension safely and effectively
- Confirm that it searches page content. Look for explicit language about tab contents or page text; title- or URL-only search will not find a phrase that appears only in the body of a page.
- Match the search scope to your tabs. Check support for active, discarded, or sleeping tabs and for the current window versus multiple windows.
- Check how queries work. Look for the options you need, such as literal phrase matching, case sensitivity, all-words or AND/OR operators, and regular expressions.
- Review permissions and data disclosures. Some Firefox add-on listings request access to tabs or website data, while some Chrome listings describe access to open-tab text. Read the specific listing before installing rather than assuming all extensions need the same access.
- Check page restrictions. Some browser pages cannot be searched by an extension. One Chrome listing notes restrictions on internal browser URLs and extension-store pages; limitations vary by add-on.
- Try a representative query. Search a word you can see on a normal webpage, then check whether the extension shows a useful snippet or takes you to the matching tab. This verifies the behavior you need on your own setup.
Ratings, user counts, version numbers, update dates, and privacy statements on extension marketplaces are listing information that can change. They do not, by themselves, prove comparative speed, accuracy, or independent privacy review.
