If a VM only sends already-encoded video files to YouTube, start by evaluating a small general-purpose VM; if it must encode, compose, scale, or filter video, size it for that processing instead. In either case, verify sustained external upload capacity, transfer costs, and recovery behavior, then test the actual workload before relying on it.
Choose specs based on what the VM does to the video
Video bitrate determines much of the outbound network load, but it does not determine CPU size by itself. CPU demand depends more on whether the VM is simply forwarding an encoded stream or is processing the media. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal vCPU or RAM minimum for either workload.

Looping already-encoded files
If software reads prerecorded, already-encoded files and forwards or remuxes the stream without costly decoding, re-encoding, or scene composition, a small general-purpose instance is a sensible first candidate—not a proven minimum. Monitor CPU and memory use, YouTube stream health, reconnects, and whether the VM sustains the intended upload rate.
Encoding or transforming video on the VM
Software encoding, composing multiple sources, scaling, applying filters, or creating several output renditions can demand substantially more compute. The required capacity varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and scene complexity. Test those exact settings and representative content; a small VM that can forward a file may not be able to encode it in real time.

OBS explains that supported hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That does not establish that a GPU VM will be cheaper, available in your region, or the right fit for your workload. Estimate the outbound bandwidth you need
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends a video bitrate of 2.5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are video-bitrate figures, not total network usage. Add audio and protocol overhead, and leave room for variation rather than treating the video figure as the VM’s complete upload requirement. YouTube advises choosing a quality the connection can reliably sustain, testing the connection, and monitoring stream health.

These recommendations are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. They are not a guarantee that a particular VM plan can sustain the stream. Check the provider’s external upload ceiling and outbound-transfer terms for the exact machine, region, and plan. Google Compute Engine documents egress limits that vary by instance series and configuration; a CPU count or internal-networking figure alone does not establish external upload capacity. Use compatible encoder and ingest settings
For an encoder-based setup, YouTube’s guidance includes constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and RTMPS as the recommended ingest connection. Listed video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio options include AAC and MP3. Check compatibility for your chosen software and stream type, then use YouTube’s current settings page for the target resolution and frame rate.
- Set a bitrate appropriate for the target quality and the upload capacity you have verified.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Prefer RTMPS for the ingest connection.
- Confirm the selected video and audio codecs are supported in your chosen streaming path.
- Test with audio and moving content similar to the material you intend to loop, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Settings and connection checks are described in YouTube Help. A stream key gives your encoder permission to send video to the intended YouTube stream; handle it as a secret, and replace it in the sender if you rotate it in YouTube.
Check total cost, not just the VM’s hourly rate
A low compute price does not necessarily mean a low-cost continuous stream. Compare the selected region’s VM charges, storage, and outbound data-transfer allowance or fees, and confirm the external egress ceiling. For a stream that runs continuously, also verify the price for the full operating duration rather than extrapolating from a short trial without accounting for the provider’s billing terms.

Google Cloud’s VM pricing varies by machine shape and location, while its Live Stream API pricing depends on configured resolution tiers, codec, active duration, outputs, and region. The managed API is a different workflow from a basic VM that sends one already-encoded stream, so its processing price is not a like-for-like estimate of a sender VM. Check Google Cloud VM instance pricing and Live Stream API pricing for the current configuration and region you are considering.

A 24/7 setup needs more than enough compute to start the stream. Confirm that the sender process can be restarted after a crash or lost connection, and monitor both the VM and YouTube stream health. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API quota documentation says an active channel may restart after 24 hours in an active streaming state. That limit is specific to the documented API; it should not be assumed to apply to every VM-based sender or YouTube ingest setup. Check the service-specific rules for your architecture at Google Cloud Live Stream API quotas and limits.
- Verify capacity: check the exact instance’s external egress limit and transfer terms for your region.
- Run the real workload: use the intended files, resolution, frame rate, codecs, and encoder settings.
- Observe a sustained trial: watch CPU, memory, YouTube stream health, reconnect behavior, and whether the target upload remains stable.
- Test recovery: confirm how the sender restarts after a process or connection failure, and check any service-specific duration limits.
This is a practical validation process, not a claim that any particular VM size has been tested or guaranteed.

For a self-managed VM, the key decision is whether it only sends existing encoded media or must also process it. A managed processing service is not automatically the cheapest alternative for a single prerecorded stream; the relevant costs and capabilities depend on the full configuration.
