Increase watch time by improving the whole viewer journey: help the right students find and recognize your stream, make the first minutes clear and useful, and give them a reliable reason to stay. Use YouTube Studio’s live and audience analytics to find what is working for your channel, then test one change at a time. There is no published formula or guaranteed uplift for 24/7 study streams, and there is no universal best time in India.
Start with a baseline, not a guess
Before changing your title, schedule, layout, or session format, record how the stream currently performs. In YouTube Studio, filter the Content view to Live and compare equivalent date ranges and similar streams. Keep live performance separate from edited videos and Shorts; their audiences and viewing contexts can differ.

YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide covers Live Control Room and post-stream analytics. The Live analytics guidance also recommends reading impressions and click-through rate alongside views and average view duration.
Track these measures together
- Impressions and click-through rate (CTR): impressions count eligible appearances of your thumbnail on YouTube; CTR indicates how often viewers watched after seeing one. They help assess whether the packaging is earning interest.
- Average view duration: estimated average minutes watched per view for the selected content and filters.
- Total watch time: total time viewers played the live event across views.
- Average and peak concurrent viewers: the average and maximum number of people watching at the same time.
- Retention, traffic sources, and stream health: use these to investigate where viewers arrived from, which moments held or lost attention, and whether technical problems affected the session. Live Control Room also provides live indicators such as concurrent viewers and chat rate.
For a useful internal comparison, log the stream date, title and thumbnail version, orientation, scheduled time, impressions, CTR, views, average view duration, watch time, average and peak concurrent viewers, leading traffic source, notable retention changes, and technical interruptions. Find the weak point in the viewer journey
YouTube describes live performance through appeal, engagement, and satisfaction: did an impression earn a click, did the click become a view, and did viewers stay for a meaningful duration or return? Use the pattern in your own analytics to choose the next experiment rather than changing several things at once.
Few impressions
Inspect traffic sources and available search terms. Make the subject, intended audience, language, and study format easy to understand, and consider publishing complementary discovery content if it suits your channel. Metadata can clarify what a stream is about, but it does not control distribution by itself.
Impressions but few clicks
Try a clear, accurate title and thumbnail that tell students what they will find: for example, the subject or study goal, the session style, language, and whether it is live. A click is only an entry point. A more clickable presentation is not a success if it sets an expectation the stream does not meet.

Clicks but short sessions
Check the opening experience, audio levels, visual legibility, and any interruptions against the retention graph. A student arriving mid-session should be able to tell quickly that the stream is active and what they can do there. Test options such as quiet co-working, a visible timer, scheduled breaks, chat, or subject-specific sessions; treat them as hypotheses and compare results rather than assuming one format works for everyone.
Stronger sessions from a particular source or at a particular time
Repeat the conditions that appear to work, then refine them. Check the source’s search terms and audience context before drawing conclusions: a useful result for one subject, language, or device may not transfer to another.
Schedule around your actual audience in India
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics > Audience and look for When your viewers are on YouTube. YouTube says this report summarizes when your channel’s viewers were online across YouTube over the last 28 days. Review it alongside top geographies, device type, and subtitle/CC languages in the Audience report guidance.

Use those signals to set a few consistent schedule tests relevant to your students, then compare similar stream lengths and formats. An India-focused channel may have viewers in more than one geography, and the official guidance does not establish a best India Standard Time slot for study streams. Let your channel’s data—not a universal timetable—decide when to run a prominent scheduled session.
Choose vertical or horizontal for a reason
Format can affect both discovery and the experience students get once they arrive. YouTube says vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed, where viewers can scroll among live streams. Horizontal streams support features including clickable chat/channel links and live pre-roll and mid-roll ads that vertical live feeds do not. Choose based on the channel’s goal: vertical may make sense when mobile discovery is important; horizontal may be preferable when its supported features matter more. If your channel has separate or dual-stream analytics, evaluate each format using its own results. Compare like with like—similar session lengths, schedules, and content—rather than treating a combined metric as proof that one orientation is better.

Make an always-on stream distinctive and worth returning to
A long runtime alone does not give viewers a reason to stay. Build a recognizable study environment with original visuals or presentation, clear subject and audience labels, a useful session structure, genuine scheduled breaks, and moderation that supports the community. These are practical editorial ideas to test, not guaranteed watch-time levers.
Keep meaningful variation and creator contribution in the stream and across the channel. YouTube’s monetization policy says content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its policy by renaming “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content.” It says the substance of each video should be materially varied and deliver creative, educational, or other value. A continuous stream is not identified by the cited policy as automatically disallowed, but interchangeable loops with little viewer value raise a clear concern. Review the channel monetization policies with the channel as a whole in mind: reviewers may consider its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, share of watch time, metadata, and About section.

Protect copyright and continuity
Use visuals and audio you created or have the necessary rights to use for both the live stream and any archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Unresolved matches can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; archived streams may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. The platform’s live-stream copyright guidance also distinguishes having a license from being cleared to avoid live detection: licensed-content users should ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist.

Should I judge the stream by views or watch time?
