Short answer: a Spot VM may cost less while it runs, but AWS can reclaim it after giving two minutes’ notice, so it cannot guarantee an always-on YouTube stream will finish without interruption. An On-Demand VM has a static instance price for the selected configuration and avoids Spot-specific reclamation. Which costs less for your stream depends on the region, instance type, operating system, runtime, and the recovery or failover setup you need.
Spot vs On-Demand for a continuous stream
With Spot, you use spare Amazon EC2 capacity. Its price varies with supply and demand, and AWS may interrupt a running instance when it needs that capacity. AWS sends a two-minute interruption notice. AWS describes Spot as appropriate for workloads that can tolerate interruptions and does not guarantee an instance will remain available long enough to finish a workload. That makes a single Spot VM a continuity risk for an always-on stream. AWS Spot Instances documentation · AWS Spot best practices.

On-Demand instances have a static price for the chosen configuration, without a long-term commitment. AWS bills by the hour or second, subject to a one-minute minimum. On-Demand avoids Spot-specific reclamation, but this is not a guarantee against every interruption or capacity issue. AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.

| Factor | Spot | On-Demand |
|---|---|---|

| Availability | Capacity may be unavailable; a running instance can be reclaimed with two minutes’ notice. | No Spot-specific reclaim mechanism; ordinary capacity availability still applies. |
| Continuity for a live stream | Plan for interruption, restart, or failover; restarting may still create a gap. | Better fit if avoiding Spot reclaim risk matters more than a potential discount. |

The suitability comparison is about Spot’s documented reclaim risk, not a promise that any EC2 design will remain continuously available.

How to estimate the cost for your stream
There is no meaningful universal dollar comparison without a specified setup. A headline maximum discount is not an expected saving for a particular region, instance, time, or streaming workload. Build the estimate around the exact configuration you intend to run.
- Specify the runtime: decide whether the VM runs only during scheduled streams or continuously, and calculate the expected hours for the billing period.
- Name the location: record the EC2 region and, for Spot pricing, the Availability Zone you are evaluating. Spot prices and availability can differ by Availability Zone.
- Choose an instance and OS: identify the exact instance type and operating system. YouTube’s encoder requirements do not determine the EC2 size; sizing depends on the media format and the actual workload.
- Look up both rates: use AWS’s current pricing information for Spot and On-Demand with those assumptions. Spot rates are variable; On-Demand rates depend on the selected configuration and region. Recheck the rates when making the decision.
- Add the rest of the design: include storage and other applicable architecture charges. If using Spot, account for the cost and complexity of restarting the encoder or failing over after interruption.
- Compare the objective, not just the VM line item: decide whether an interrupted stream and recovery gap are acceptable. A lower compute charge may not meet an always-on requirement.
A full estimate should state its region, Availability Zone where applicable, instance type, OS, hours, and continuity design. Without those inputs, a precise price or saving cannot be established.

What the YouTube encoder needs—and what it does not tell you about VM size
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes supported codecs and settings for bitrate encoding, resolution, and frame rate. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and it says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingest and encoder requirements; they do not specify which EC2 instance can process or transmit a particular file reliably. Validate sizing against your own media format and load rather than inferring it from YouTube’s settings. Choose based on continuity as well as compute price
- Consider Spot if the potential variable-rate saving is worth designing and operating an interruption-aware restart or failover path, and a stream gap is acceptable.
- Consider On-Demand if you want a static instance price and want to avoid the Spot-specific reclaim mechanism. It still does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Do not treat a VM price as the total stream cost: include storage, other architecture charges, and the operational consequences of recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live without keeping a VM or home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. There is nothing to keep on at home, it streams the upload as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
