What Claude Can and Cannot Do: A Practical Guide to Its Features and Limits

Claude can help with writing, analysis, coding, and some image and tool-enabled tasks, but capabilities vary and its answers need verification.

Claude can help with writing, analysis, coding, and document-heavy tasks, and some versions can work with images or use tools. Its abilities depend on the model, product, permissions, and setup—and its answers can be wrong. Treat it as an assistant whose work you review, not an authority that replaces verification or professional judgment.

What can Claude do?

Claude is a family of AI models available through consumer and developer products. Anthropic describes uses that include conversation, analysis, coding, creative work, and document and knowledge tasks. Depending on the model and interface, it can also process image inputs such as diagrams, charts, and tables. These are vendor descriptions, not guarantees that a response will be correct or useful for every task. Anthropic’s Transparency Hub describes model capabilities and safeguards.

Writing, analysis, and document work

You can ask Claude to draft or revise text, explain material, organize information, and help reason through a question. For document-heavy tasks, provide the relevant files or text in a product that supports them, then check that the response reflects the source rather than adding unsupported details.

Coding and knowledge work

Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 for well-scoped everyday coding, agent, and knowledge tasks, and Fable 5.1 for complex coding and knowledge work. Those descriptions are Anthropic’s positioning, not independent evidence that one model will outperform another on your project. Anthropic’s Sonnet product page provides its current product information.

Images and other inputs

Image understanding is available in some Claude models and products, but should not be assumed for every chat or access route. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 as supporting text, voice dictation, and image inputs. If your task depends on an image or another input type, confirm that the specific interface accepts it before relying on the feature. Anthropic’s model and safety descriptions provide model-specific details.

Can Claude browse the internet or take actions?

Some configured Claude products can use tools and carry out multi-step workflows. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 operating a browser, working across applications, recovering from failed steps, and running as a managed agent. That does not mean every Claude conversation can browse, access your apps, or act on your behalf. Tool access depends on the product surface, integrations, permissions, and setup. Anthropic’s Transparency Hub describes these capabilities in the context of its models.

Before asking Claude to take an action, check what tools are enabled and what permissions they have. Review consequential changes—such as edits, messages, or transactions—rather than assuming a completed workflow is correct.

What can Claude get wrong?

Claude can provide false facts, invent details, or fill gaps with plausible-sounding answers. Anthropic’s historical report on Claude 2 warned that its models “still confabulate,” and advised against relying on them alone in high-stakes situations. The report is historical; its statements about the older product’s web access or knowledge cutoff should not be read as descriptions of current Claude. Anthropic’s report, Unintended uses and limitations, gives the original context.

  • Verify important factual claims against primary sources, especially dates, figures, legal requirements, and technical instructions.
  • For decisions involving health, safety, finances, or legal rights, use Claude only as an aid and consult a qualified person.
  • When working from supplied documents, compare the answer with the source material and ask Claude to identify the passages supporting its conclusions.

Why Claude’s abilities vary

“Claude” does not refer to one fixed set of features. Capabilities can differ by model, product surface, enabled tools, access level, and safeguards. Anthropic publishes separate model descriptions and system cards; its product safeguards can block, limit, or reroute some requests, particularly in sensitive areas. The Transparency Hub and system-card index are useful for checking model-specific information.

Models, access, and pricing change

As of Anthropic’s pages checked on October 7, 2026, Sonnet 5.5 was listed for Claude.ai on web, iOS, and Android, as well as the Claude Platform and named cloud marketplaces. Anthropic listed API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Fable 5.1 was described as available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users, with API pricing of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. These are vendor-listed prices and access details at that time, not a complete plan-by-plan feature guarantee; confirm current terms on Anthropic’s Sonnet page and model documentation.

Model identifiers and lifecycle status also change. On the developer documentation checked October 7, 2026, Sonnet 4.5 was marked deprecated, with retirement listed for November 30, 2026, and Sonnet 5.5 recommended as its replacement. Developers should check the live model lifecycle documentation before choosing or updating an API model.

Fable and Mythos are not interchangeable access options

Anthropic says Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are the same underlying model with different safeguard levels. Fable is generally available under Anthropic’s specified access terms; Mythos is limited to trusted access programs and Claude Security, with safeguards designed for cybersecurity and life-sciences work. Mythos should not be treated as a generally available option for ordinary Claude users. Anthropic’s Transparency Hub and its Mythos announcement describe the distinction.

How to use Claude well

  1. Match the model and interface to the task. Check that the product supports the inputs, integrations, or tools you need; access varies.
  2. Give relevant context. Supply the source text, requirements, or constraints Claude needs, and specify the form of answer you want.
  3. Ask for evidence when it matters. Request source passages or a clear account of assumptions, then check them yourself.
  4. Review actions and outputs. Inspect generated code, factual claims, and any changes made through connected tools before using them.
  5. Use human expertise for high stakes. Do not make Claude the sole basis for decisions where an error could cause harm.
