If your foldable phone’s hinge suddenly resists movement or its inner screen develops new lines, black spots, flickering, a blank display, or touch problems, stop repeatedly folding it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Don’t force the hinge, probe it with a tool, press on the flexible display, or peel off its factory-installed screen protector. The safest next step is to document the symptoms and check coverage and repair options for your exact model and country.
What to do right away
- Stop if the hinge resists. Don’t force it open or shut, and don’t keep folding a phone whose inner display appears damaged or is behaving unpredictably.
- Keep the screen and hinge clear. Before folding, check that no grit or small object is on the inner display. Don’t close the phone over debris, insert anything into the hinge, or use a sharp object on the display. Google warns that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens; Motorola likewise cautions against putting objects between the screens or inserting anything at the display edge. These are precautions, not a way to diagnose the fault.
- Don’t remove or replace the inner film yourself without checking model guidance. Google says not to peel off its pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one. Samsung recommends an authorized service center for Galaxy Z protector replacement. Motorola’s cited Razr care page says not to use a protector on the internal display. Follow the current instructions for your specific model rather than buying generic inner-screen film.
- Record what happened. Note the model, serial number or IMEI, purchase date, and whether the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid. Describe when the fault started and whether the screen still displays an image and responds to touch. Take photos or video of visible symptoms if you can do so without pressing or flexing the screen.
- Back up your data if the phone still works. Ask the service provider whether repair or replacement could erase data before authorizing service.
Which symptoms need support?
Contact support for new display faults
New lines, flickering, black spots, a blank inner display, or touch that no longer works are reasons to contact the manufacturer and check coverage. Google’s warranty guidance lists these among examples of display problems. A visibly lifting protector or exposed screen also warrants checking the maker’s instructions; don’t peel or press it back into place.

Don’t assume every sound or crease variation means failure
Motorola says slight waviness at the fold, unevenness beneath the fold, and sounds during hinge or display movement can be normal on the Razr devices addressed by its care guidance. That observation applies to those models, not every foldable. A new visual defect, impaired touch, or hinge that resists movement should not be dismissed as normal based on that guidance.
Check coverage before agreeing to paid repair
Use the manufacturer’s coverage checker or support channel for the exact device and location, and request an estimate before authorizing paid work. Google says its coverage flow uses the IMEI and reported issue to check coverage and estimated repair cost. Under Google’s guidance, a display issue without physical or liquid damage may be eligible; cracked or broken screens, drop damage, and liquid damage may be excluded. Eligibility depends on the device and circumstances, and warranty terms and statutory rights vary by location.

Don’t assume a hinge or display fault is automatically covered, or that every visible display problem is excluded. The manufacturer or service provider must assess the device and its applicable coverage.
Choose a repair route for your model and location
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized provider when a hinge or inner display appears physically faulty. Available routes, eligibility, cost, and timing depend on the model, diagnosis, region, and service terms. Compare options using these points:

For Motorola Razr 2026 in the U.S., the cited support page states a one-year standard limited warranty. That is a model- and region-specific statement, not a warranty term for all foldables. Coverage rules and any consumer rights beyond the stated warranty depend on location.

Clean only the surface; don’t try to clear the hinge
If the display surface needs cleaning, Google recommends a soft, lint-free cloth and avoiding solvents and abrasives. Motorola allows a lint-free cloth or pre-moistened screen wipes and says not to use pressurized-air dusters. Cleaning may remove surface dirt; it will not repair a damaged hinge or display or safely remove debris trapped inside. Never push an object into the hinge to dislodge anything.

A hinge or inner-screen fault needs model-specific diagnosis, and a generic part or tool may not fit or address the problem. Motorola mentions model-specific iFixit repair kits with genuine parts and tools, but says repair difficulty varies and cautions that DIY repair should be limited to out-of-warranty devices because damage during repair may affect warranty. For an uncertain fault, first obtain the official assessment and estimate; consider DIY only after confirming the exact model, coverage status, and repair risks.
