Foldable phones can handle repeated everyday use, but their flexible inner screens and hinges need more careful handling than a conventional phone’s glass display. Keep grit and objects away from the hinge and between the screens, leave the factory-installed inner-screen protector in place, clean gently, and follow the instructions for your exact model. No single fold-count or water-resistance rating guarantees how long an individual phone will last.
How durable are foldable phones in everyday use?
Durability depends on the exact model, how it is handled, and whether its hinge and display are exposed to particles, pressure, moisture, or damage. The inner display is flexible and can be more vulnerable to sharp or hard contact than a typical phone screen. The hinge also creates places where debris can collect or become trapped.

Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 withstood over 200,000 folds in its tests. Samsung’s explanation equates that result to 100 folds a day for five years under its quality-standard calculation, but also says the test was conducted under certain temperature conditions and that the cycle life is not guaranteed under other conditions. This is a historical, manufacturer-reported result for those two models, not a promise that a phone will last five years or a prediction for newer or other brands’ foldables. What to do before folding the phone
Before closing a foldable, check that nothing is caught between the displays or near the hinge. A small object can press against the inner screen when the halves meet.
- Keep coins, keys, cards, crumbs, and grit away from the space between the screens.
- Do not force the phone open or closed, and do not fold it backward. Samsung gives this guidance for its foldables; follow the matching manual for other models.
- Do not press the inner display with a hard or sharp object. Google warns Pixel Fold owners that “Flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens, so avoid contact with crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects.”
- Keep the hinge area clear of debris. Motorola also warns Razr users to check for obstructions before closing the phone.
These are model-specific manufacturer instructions, but checking for obstructions and avoiding unnecessary force are sensible precautions for a folding design.

Should you remove or replace the inner-screen protector?
No—not unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model say otherwise. On the cited foldables, the factory-installed inner protector is designed for the flexible display; it is not simply a generic screen film.

- Samsung: advises against removing the protector and directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement.
- Motorola Razr: says the protector is customized for the foldable design and should be replaced only by Motorola-approved service personnel; it advises against third-party protectors and self-replacement.
- Google Pixel Fold: says not to peel off the protector or apply a third-party one.
If the protector lifts, bubbles, or becomes damaged, check the support instructions for the exact model and region rather than peeling it off or applying a universal replacement. Repair routes and availability vary by region.

How to clean a foldable phone
Use a soft cloth and avoid abrasive materials. Cleaning-liquid and disinfectant instructions differ by model, so check the device’s own guide before applying any liquid. Do not spray cleaner directly onto a display or let moisture enter ports and openings.
- Samsung advises gently cleaning a dusty or dirty hinge with a soft, dry cloth.
- Motorola’s Razr 50 guide recommends a dry, soft cloth for the display and warns against abrasive materials, spraying cleaner directly onto the display, and moisture entering openings.
- Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold guide gives additional cleaning instructions for that model. Do not assume its allowances apply to other foldables.
A soft, lint-free cloth is useful for routine exterior cleaning; it does not replace checking for debris before folding or justify pushing material into the hinge.

Are foldable phones waterproof or dustproof?
There is no single answer for all foldables. Water- and dust-resistance ratings and exclusions are model-specific. A rating does not make a phone invulnerable, and resistance can diminish through normal wear or after damage, repair, or disassembly. Follow the exact model’s manual, especially around beaches, pools, and exposure to particles.

Are cases worth using?
A case made for the exact foldable model is a reasonable optional way to protect its exterior. Check that it fits the hinge and does not obstruct the phone’s movement. A case does not remove the inner display’s sensitivity to sharp contact or prevent debris from getting between the screens.
How to choose a foldable based on durability information
When comparing models, look beyond a headline fold count or IP rating. Check the specific model’s instructions and support information for:
- Its water and dust rating, the test conditions, and exclusions such as beach or pool use.
- How the manufacturer says to handle the hinge and clear particles before closing.
- Whether the inner protector must remain in place and who is authorized to replace it.
- Whether a durability figure is a manufacturer test, which model it covers, and what conditions or caveats accompany it.
- Whether model-specific cases and authorized repair are available in your region.
The manufacturer sources cited here do not provide a common independent test across current foldables, so they do not support a reliable cross-brand durability ranking.
