What Causes Technology Stocks to Drop Together? A Beginner’s Guide to Nasdaq Selloffs

Technology stocks can fall together even when no single company has reported a disaster. The usual explanation is a combination of shared exposure: higher interest rates reduce the value investors assign to distant earnings, a few mega-cap companies carry heavy weight in cap-weighted indexes, funds and institutions trade many holdings at once, and a common narrative—such as doubts about artificial-intelligence spending or software growth—resets expectations across the sector.

That does not mean every technology company has the same problem. A Nasdaq decline can be dominated by a handful of large constituents while smaller companies, or an entire subsector such as cybersecurity, behave differently. The useful beginner’s question is therefore not only “Why did tech fall?” but also “Which exposure did the falling stocks share, and what changed in expectations?”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The five forces that can make technology stocks fall together

1. Interest rates change the value of future growth

Many technology companies are priced on profits expected several years from now rather than on the cash they generate today. Investors translate those future profits into a value in the present. When market interest rates or Treasury yields rise, the discount rate applied to those distant cash flows generally rises as well. The same forecast of future earnings can therefore support a lower share price.

This is why a technology selloff can begin with an interest-rate move rather than a company announcement. A higher yield on relatively lower-risk bonds can also make investors less willing to pay a very high multiple for a growth stock. The effect is usually strongest for businesses whose expected earnings are furthest in the future, not necessarily for companies with the weakest current operations.

Rates are not a complete explanation for every decline. Inflation data, central-bank expectations, economic growth and liquidity can all move yields and valuations at the same time. Treat the rate channel as a common pressure, not proof that rates alone caused a particular day’s selloff.

2. Index concentration magnifies weakness in market leaders

The Nasdaq Composite is weighted by the total market capitalization of its listed companies, and Nasdaq says it has no concentration caps. A company’s weight therefore rises with its total market value. A relatively small group of very large companies can represent a significant share of the index.

That structure creates an important distinction:

  • “The Nasdaq fell” describes the movement of the index.
  • “Every technology company fell equally” describes a much broader claim that may be false.

If several mega-cap constituents decline, their combined index impact can overwhelm stable or rising smaller companies. The headline may look like a sector-wide collapse even when the average listed company is holding up better. This is the index mathematics behind Nasdaq’s explanation that a small group of large-cap companies represents a significant share of the Composite’s total weight.

3. Shared AI, earnings and capital-spending expectations reset valuations

Stocks move on expectations, not only on reported results. Investors may sell a company whose latest quarter is intact if they believe the next several years of growth will be slower, less profitable or more expensive to achieve.

Artificial intelligence has created a particularly broad common narrative. Nasdaq’s February 2026 reporting described concern that AI could replace or restructure existing software and technology businesses, as well as concern that technology valuations had become excessive. Its February 2026 technology-pullback analysis also pointed to the market reaction after Anthropic released Claude plug-ins, higher fiscal-2026 capital-expenditure estimates from hyperscalers and weak labor-market data.

The concern is not limited to an AI application vendor. If investors question whether heavy spending on data centers, chips, cloud capacity or software will eventually produce enough profit, they may reduce valuations across the companies supplying that ecosystem. Nasdaq’s July 2026 ETF research similarly described worries about whether elevated AI capital expenditure would translate into profits.

This mechanism explains why a selloff can affect semiconductor, cloud, hardware and software shares at the same time while for different reasons. The common factor is a revised view of future returns.

4. Funds, institutions and leverage transmit one decision across many holdings

Technology exposure is often held through exchange-traded funds, index funds, institutional portfolios and diversified strategies. When investors redeem a technology ETF, the fund may sell multiple constituents to raise cash. A portfolio manager rebalancing risk, a hedge fund reducing leverage or a margin call can produce the same synchronized effect.

Nasdaq’s February 2026 settlement analysis observed institutional selling in technology, hedge-fund buying during the decline, retail buying and outflows from technology ETFs. Those observations show that investor groups can disagree about value while prices still fall broadly. It is inaccurate to describe every decline as panic or to say passive funds alone caused it. A better description is that pooled vehicles and correlated positioning can amplify a change in expectations that began elsewhere.

Flows can also make the timing look abrupt. A new view about rates or earnings may develop over days, but when many portfolios adjust at once, orders arrive together and prices move quickly. Rebalancing rules, risk limits and derivatives hedges can reinforce the direction without implying that every investor reached the same fundamental conclusion.

5. Technology normally moves more than the broad market

Higher volatility means a similar change in expectations can produce a larger daily move in technology shares. Nasdaq Dorsey Wright reported that, over its cited three-month period in 2026, the S&P 500 had a daily standard deviation of returns of 0.81%, compared with 1.87% for the iShares U.S. Tech. ETF (IYW). On that measure, technology was approximately 2.3 times as volatile as the broad market.

Measure Reported value What it tells a beginner
S&P 500 daily-return standard deviation 0.81% The cited broad-market volatility baseline
IYW daily-return standard deviation 1.87% The cited technology-ETF volatility
Relative volatility Approximately 2.3 times Technology made larger typical daily moves in that period

The figures are a historical comparison for the period Nasdaq Dorsey Wright cited, not a forecast. Volatility by itself does not prove that a stock is overvalued or that a correction will continue. It explains why technology can fall farther than the initial change in expectations might suggest.

Why the Nasdaq can look worse than the average stock

The Nasdaq is an index family, not a single business. Its members have different industries, sizes and sensitivities, while the Composite’s market-cap weighting gives the largest companies the greatest influence. A drop in a few mega-cap technology names can therefore dominate the published index level.

To separate leadership weakness from broad deterioration, compare the cap-weighted index with an equal-weight measure or an ex-technology benchmark. If the cap-weighted index falls much more, concentration in the largest constituents is probably a major part of the story. If both measures fall together, the driver may be broader macroeconomic pressure, a liquidity shock or a market-wide reduction in risk.

This comparison is more informative than counting headlines. A market can have a weak Nasdaq reading while many smaller constituents are flat, and it can also have broad weakness hidden temporarily by a few large winners.

Do all technology stocks move together?

No. Software, semiconductors, cybersecurity, hardware, cloud and internet businesses have different revenue drivers, customer bases and valuation assumptions. Nasdaq’s 2026 research describes periods in which these themes diverged. In one recent example, semiconductor-focused ETFs weakened sharply even while continuing to attract inflows, showing that price performance and investor conviction were not perfectly aligned.

Correlation also changes over time. Nasdaq Dorsey Wright reported that technology’s normal correlation with the S&P 500 excluding technology and communications services is approximately 70%–75% in an average period, but it measured only 3% over the cited six months in 2026. A low recent correlation means the sector was behaving unusually relative to those other groups; it does not mean technology has permanently decoupled from the market.

When comparing subsectors, ask what each one shares with the others:

  • Semiconductors: exposure to chip demand, inventories, capital equipment and AI infrastructure spending.
  • Software: sensitivity to subscription growth, enterprise budgets, margins and the possibility that AI changes product economics.
  • Cloud and hardware: dependence on data-center investment, power and capacity spending, and large customers’ capital plans.
  • Cybersecurity: security budgets and recurring demand, which may not respond exactly like discretionary software spending.
  • Internet businesses: advertising, consumer activity and platform-specific regulation or engagement trends.

A common down day does not erase these differences. It may simply mean that a shared macro or valuation factor temporarily outweighed company-specific information.

What a real technology-stock selloff looks like in the data

One documented example helps put the mechanisms in perspective. Nasdaq IR Advisory Analysts reported an 8.2% decline in the S&P Technology Index between January 28 and February 5, 2026. That is an observed index move over a defined period; it does not establish that one cause explained the entire decline.

Nasdaq’s February 2026 analyses associated that pullback with several overlapping concerns: AI disruption following Anthropic’s Claude plug-in release, higher fiscal-2026 capital-expenditure estimates from hyperscalers, weak labor-market data and technology valuation worries. The same period’s settlement analysis described institutional technology selling, hedge-fund buying, retail buying and technology-ETF outflows. Taken together, those observations illustrate how expectations, flows and index construction can operate simultaneously.

A beginner’s diagnostic checklist for “Why are all tech stocks dropping today?”

  1. Find the first visible catalyst. Check the timing of rate and Treasury-yield moves, inflation or jobs data, tariffs, earnings announcements, AI releases, regulation and geopolitical headlines. A catalyst that appeared before the price move is more useful than a headline written afterward.
  2. Measure the breadth of the decline. Look at large-, mid- and small-cap technology shares. If losses are concentrated in a few mega-cap leaders, index concentration may explain much of the headline. If participation is broad, a common factor is more likely.
  3. Compare benchmarks. Put the cap-weighted Nasdaq beside an equal-weight measure and an ex-technology benchmark. A much larger decline in the cap-weighted index points toward leadership concentration; similar losses across benchmarks suggest a wider risk-off move.
  4. Check flows and positioning. Review technology-ETF creations or redemptions, institutional activity and signs of leverage reduction or rebalancing. Flows can amplify a move but do not prove why the first investor sold.
  5. Separate valuation from operations. A lower price-to-earnings or sales multiple is not the same as a collapse in revenue, margins or demand. Determine whether investors changed the business forecast or simply the price they will pay for that forecast.
  6. Compare subsectors. Semiconductors, software, cybersecurity, hardware, cloud and internet companies may respond differently. Divergence is evidence that the selloff is not a single uniform technology problem.
  7. Compare the move with normal volatility. A one-day decline should be judged against the stock or sector’s usual range. Technology’s 1.87% daily standard deviation for IYW in Nasdaq Dorsey Wright’s cited period shows why an apparently dramatic move may still occur more often than it would in the broad market.

How to interpret common explanations

What you observe What it may indicate What it does not prove
Yields rise while long-duration growth shares fall Higher discount rates are pressuring valuations That rates were the only cause
Mega-cap shares fall and the cap-weighted Nasdaq drops sharply Index concentration is magnifying leadership weakness Every constituent is equally weak
Several AI-related groups decline together Investors are reassessing future spending, competition or profits AI demand has disappeared
Technology ETFs show outflows during a broad decline Pooled vehicles may be transmitting or amplifying selling Passive funds alone initiated the move
Technology falls more than the broad market Its higher normal volatility is magnifying the move The sector is certain to keep falling
Semiconductor prices fall while semiconductor ETF inflows continue Investor conviction and short-term price action are diverging Flows guarantee a rebound

Common beginner mistakes

Assuming one headline explains every stock

“Rates,” “AI” or “recession” may describe a broad factor, but each company has its own earnings exposure. A chip designer, a subscription-software vendor and a cybersecurity provider can react differently to the same headline.

Confusing the index with an average holding

A cap-weighted index gives large companies more influence. Do not infer that the median constituent fell by the same percentage as the index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a price move as proof of a fundamental collapse

Prices incorporate expectations. A stock can fall because projected growth or the valuation multiple declined even when current-quarter results remain intact. Conversely, a stable index does not prove that every business is healthy.

Calling every synchronized move a panic

ETF redemptions, institutional rebalancing and leverage reduction can create correlated selling without a single emotional event. Use “forced selling” only when the evidence points to margin or risk constraints; otherwise describe the observable flow and its possible amplification effect.

Turning volatility into a forecast

The 2.3-times comparison from Nasdaq Dorsey Wright describes behavior in a specified historical period. It is not a prediction about the next session or an argument that a decline must continue.

What to remember when the Nasdaq drops

  • A handful of mega-cap companies can pull down a cap-weighted Nasdaq even when many smaller stocks are stable.
  • Higher rates and yields can reduce the present value investors assign to distant future profits.
  • AI, earnings and capital-expenditure expectations can reprice an entire technology theme before reported results change.
  • ETF flows, institutional trades, rebalancing and leverage can make correlated holdings move together.
  • Technology’s historically higher volatility can turn a modest change in expectations into a larger daily decline.
  • A sector-wide fall does not mean every technology company has the same fundamental problem.

The most reliable interpretation combines the catalyst, index concentration, flows, volatility and company fundamentals. That framework explains why technology stocks often drop together without pretending that every selloff has one cause.
