The accelerated accretion heats the inner disk, which can become brighter than the star itself; material striking the star may add an intense hot spot. This explains the outburst’s energy source, but astronomers do not yet know one trigger that accounts for every eruption.
How an accretion outburst makes a young star brighter
Young stars grow by drawing gas from disks that orbit them. During an outburst, the rate of inward flow rises sharply. As gas moves deeper into the star’s gravitational field, it releases energy and heats the inner disk. In the powerful events known as FU Orionis-type, or FUor, outbursts, the disk can dominate the system’s visible light. NASA’s Hubble account describes the inner accretion flow reaching the star and creating a hot impact region that emits ultraviolet light; the team interpreted its observations as indicating a temperature of about 16,000 kelvins for the inner disk and impact region (NASA, Hubble report).

The scale of the change can be dramatic. NASA reports that FU Orionis rose to about 100 times its earlier brightness within months in 1936. That historical example is not a standard amount for every young-star outburst.

What triggers the surge in accretion?
The increase in accretion is the immediate source of the extra light; what sets off the increase is less settled. Thermal instability in the disk is a leading explanation for classic FUor events, but theoretical uncertainty remains. In their review, Lee Hartmann and Scott J. Kenyon summarized approximate accretion rates of 10−7 solar masses per year in a low T Tauri state and 10−4 solar masses per year in a FU Ori high state. Those figures describe states discussed in the review, not measurements that apply to all young stars (Hartmann and Kenyon, 1996).

Other possible contributors include gas falling onto the disk from its surroundings and gravitational interactions with a companion. These possibilities need not be mutually exclusive: infalling material or a companion’s influence could help destabilize a disk, while the resulting increase in accretion powers the brightening. The evidence does not establish a single trigger for all eruptions.
A streamer observed around FU Orionis
ALMA observations of FU Orionis detected a thin stream of carbon monoxide falling onto the system. The researchers said the observed stream did not appear sufficient on its own to sustain the ongoing eruption. They proposed that a larger stream in the past might have destabilized the system. This is a proposed interpretation of one star, not proof that infalling streams trigger every outburst (ALMA report).

FUors and EXors: two broad patterns
FUor and EXor are useful labels for different patterns of eruptive behavior, not rigid categories with universal cutoffs. An ESO-hosted 2024 meeting abstract describes EXor brightenings as typically recurring, roughly 2–4 magnitudes, and generally lasting less than a year. It describes FUor brightenings as reaching up to 5 magnitudes and potentially persisting for decades. Individual stars can show mixed characteristics, so these ranges should be treated as class-level tendencies (ESO-hosted 2024 meeting abstract).

EX Lupi’s 2022 burst
A peer-reviewed study of EX Lupi found that its accretion rate increased sevenfold during the March 2022 burst, which the authors estimated lasted three months. They tested whether a reduction in dust obscuration could explain the brightening and concluded that it could not in this event (Cruz-Sáenz de Miera et al., 2023). The case illustrates why astronomers examine more than brightness alone when identifying an outburst’s cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How astronomers distinguish an accretion outburst
A sudden rise in brightness is an observation, not by itself a diagnosis. Astronomers look for evidence about the material and energy producing the light: whether accretion has increased, how the disk and star contribute, and whether changing obscuration could instead account for the apparent change. EX Lupi’s 2022 observations, for example, allowed the study’s authors to reject reduced extinction as the explanation for that particular burst. The cause must be assessed for each object from its observations.
