How to Use an Eligible Co-Branded RuPay Credit Card for UPI Payments on Google Pay

You can use a co-branded card for UPI payments on Google Pay only when it is an eligible RuPay credit card and its issuing bank supports RuPay credit cards on UPI. Add it through Google Pay’s dedicated RuPay setup, complete verification, and use the UPI PIN for that card to pay participating merchants. Co-branding alone does not make a card eligible.

Check whether your co-branded card is eligible

Google Pay’s India instructions require a supported RuPay credit card and an issuer that enables RuPay credit cards on UPI. Check the card network and confirm card-specific support with the bank; if the bank or card does not appear during setup, contact the issuer. See Google Pay’s RuPay card setup guidance.

A co-branded product can be issued on more than one network. For example, Google describes Flex as a partnership with Axis Bank and SBI Card and says it is available on RuPay and Visa; its UPI QR payment instructions apply to the RuPay card only. Do not assume a Visa version, or another co-branded card, can be linked for UPI. Check the network printed on your card and the issuer’s support.

Adding an ordinary credit card to Google Pay for tokenized card payments is a different feature from linking a RuPay card for UPI. For this process, use the dedicated Add RuPay credit card option, not the standard card-add flow. Google’s separate credit or debit card instructions describe regular card payments.

Add the RuPay card and set up its UPI PIN

  1. Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Add RuPay credit card.
  3. Select the issuing bank and the eligible RuPay card.
  4. Complete the verification method shown in the app. The mobile number in Google Pay must match the number registered with the card, and the phone needs outgoing SMS service. If Aadhaar verification is offered, the Aadhaar-linked mobile number must also match the number registered to the card. Google says Aadhaar verification is available only for a limited number of issuers.
  5. Follow the prompts to create a UPI PIN for the card, or enter its existing UPI PIN.

Google’s setup instructions cover card linking and verification. The UPI PIN is not necessarily the same as the card’s ordinary credit-card or ATM PIN.

Pay a merchant with the linked card

At an eligible merchant checkout or when scanning a merchant’s UPI QR code, choose the RuPay credit card as the payment method and enter that card’s UPI PIN. Google says RuPay card-on-UPI payments can be used for online merchant purchases and merchant business accounts reached through UPI QR scans. See Google Pay’s RuPay payment guidance.

The linked UPI address is intended for merchant checkout. A payment attempt to a person-to-person destination will fail; using the card does not turn a merchant-only UPI facility into a way to send money to friends or family.

Know the restrictions, limits and possible charges

  • Not for person-to-person payments: Google says the card cannot be used to pay friends or family or receive money from them.
  • Not for transfers or investing: It cannot be used for a self-transfer from RuPay to a savings account or for stock-market investing.
  • Merchant acceptance varies: Some merchants may not accept RuPay credit-card payments. Choose another payment method if the card is unavailable or declined at checkout.
  • Limits are issuer-controlled: Google says the issuer considers the card’s approved credit limit, its own UPI risk-management limits, and any limit the cardholder sets in the bank’s mobile banking app. Google’s guidance does not establish one universal RuPay-on-UPI transaction cap.
  • A merchant fee may apply: Google says some merchants may charge a small processing fee inclusive of GST, payable directly to the merchant. Check the checkout screen and the merchant’s terms; the fee is not stated to apply to every transaction.

Troubleshoot common setup and payment failures

  • The bank or card is missing: The issuer may not support RuPay credit-card UPI for that card. Ask the issuer to confirm card-specific eligibility.
  • Verification does not complete: Check that the card details and OTP are correct, outgoing SMS is available, and Google Pay is using the SIM with the card-registered number. If Aadhaar verification is not offered, Google advises contacting the issuer.
  • A payment is rejected: Confirm that the destination is a merchant and that the merchant accepts RuPay credit-card payments. Check the card’s UPI limit and any issuer-set restrictions in the bank app.
  • The PIN is rejected: Enter the UPI PIN set for the RuPay card, rather than assuming the ordinary card or ATM PIN will work.

Google’s help pages do not provide a comparable issuer-by-issuer card matrix. If choosing among co-branded cards, verify RuPay network and UPI support with the issuer, then compare each card’s own fees, limits and rewards rather than treating co-branding as proof of UPI eligibility.
