An old Wi-Fi router can extend a home network, connect wired-only devices, or serve as a hands-on networking lab—but what it can do depends on its firmware and model. The most broadly documented reuse is a wired access point: connect it to your existing network by Ethernet, turn off its DHCP server, and configure it to bridge devices onto the same network.
Six ways to put an old router to work
| Use | Ethernet needed? | What it does | Model or firmware requirement | Separate network? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wired access point | Yes, between routers | Extends Wi-Fi coverage | Check the manual for access-point or bridge configuration | No; typically bridges clients onto the existing network |
| Wireless repeater | No uplink cable | Repeats an upstream Wi-Fi connection | Compatible hardware and firmware; may require third-party firmware | Depends on configuration |
| Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet bridge | Yes, from router to wired device | Connects wired-only equipment to Wi-Fi | Must support wireless-client or bridge mode | Usually bridges devices onto the upstream network |
| Basic network switch | Yes, for the uplink | Adds wired ports for devices | Works as part of a correctly configured access-point setup | No; devices share the same network |
| Guest or IoT network | Depends on topology | Places selected devices on a separate network | Must support a routed network and appropriate firewall rules | Yes, if properly configured |
| Networking practice device | Often useful | Provides a safe place to learn configuration | Features vary; avoid exposing an unsupported device to the internet | Not necessarily |
1. Add Wi-Fi coverage with a wired access point
This is the clearest general-purpose reuse. Netgate says most small-office and home wireless routers can be used as access points when a dedicated access point is unavailable. Its generic setup uses an unused management IP in the existing subnet, disables DHCP on the spare router, and connects the devices through LAN ports. See Netgate’s access-point configuration.

- Connect to the spare router’s administration page and find its LAN or network settings.
- Give it an unused management IP address in the same subnet as your main router. Avoid an address already assigned to another device; a DHCP reservation on the main router can help prevent conflicts.
- Disable the spare router’s DHCP server so the main router remains responsible for handing out addresses.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the main router to a LAN port on the spare router. Do not use the spare router’s WAN port for this generic access-point setup: Netgate warns that doing so can put wireless clients on a separate broadcast domain and cause double NAT.
- Set the Wi-Fi name and password as desired, then reconnect a device and confirm it receives its network settings from the main router.
Menu names and the exact setup vary by model, so check the manual. If the router offers a dedicated access-point mode, that may automate some of these settings.

2. Can an old router work as a wireless repeater?
Potentially. OpenWrt documents an access-point-plus-station (AP+STA) arrangement: the repurposed router connects wirelessly to an upstream access point and serves its own clients over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This requires compatible hardware and firmware; do not assume the stock software has a repeater option. OpenWrt’s relay configuration documentation describes one such setup.

A wireless repeater avoids running an Ethernet uplink, but configuration can be less straightforward than using the router as a wired access point. Check the exact model’s supported firmware and radio capabilities before attempting it.
3. Connect wired-only devices to Wi-Fi
A router with a supported wireless-client or bridge mode can act as a Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet bridge. Connect a device such as a wired-only media player, printer, or game console to the old router’s LAN port; the router then carries that device’s network traffic over its wireless link to the main network.

In the wired access-point arrangement, the spare router’s LAN ports can also connect nearby wired devices to the same network. This is a practical way to reuse ports as well as add Wi-Fi, provided the router bridges its LAN and wireless clients correctly.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
This does not isolate those devices. They remain on the shared network, so a router configured this way is not a substitute for a managed switch or a firewall-based security boundary.
5. Create a separate guest or IoT network—only with the right features
A second Wi-Fi name alone does not establish isolation. A genuine guest or IoT network needs a separate routed network and firewall rules that control which devices can reach the main network and the internet. The spare router must support those capabilities in its firmware, and the overall network must be designed accordingly.

If the router is no longer suitable for everyday use, it can still be useful for learning how network settings fit together. Practice changing a LAN address, configuring Wi-Fi, exploring access-point mode, or understanding DHCP—preferably on a disconnected test network rather than on a router that serves your household.

Quick Recap
Before choosing a project
- Find the exact model number and consult its manual for the mode you want.
- Check whether the manufacturer still provides security updates and whether firmware can be updated.
- Choose a wired access point when you can run Ethernet and want the most straightforward way to add Wi-Fi coverage.
- For wireless repeating, bridging, or network isolation, verify hardware and firmware support before changing settings.
- Back up the existing configuration if the router offers that option, and keep a way to restore factory settings if the setup goes wrong.
