For home heating, the main alternatives are electric heating—especially heat pumps—and natural gas where service is available. Renewable heating oil and biofuel blends can reduce petroleum use while retaining liquid-fuel equipment, but compatibility and supply vary. The right option depends on the vehicle or building, local infrastructure, energy prices, and the electricity or fuel being used.
Which alternatives replace oil, and how?
“Replacing oil” can mean switching to a different energy system or changing the liquid fuel while keeping much of the existing equipment. The distinction matters: an electric vehicle no longer needs gasoline or diesel, while an ethanol-gasoline blend still contains petroleum. A heat pump uses electricity to move heat; renewable heating oil remains a liquid fuel used in a heating system.

|---|---|---|---|
| Road transport | Electricity | A battery-electric vehicle replaces liquid motor fuel with electricity. | Does the vehicle’s duty cycle work with available charging? |
| Road transport | Ethanol or diesel biofuels | Blends or drop-in fuels can displace some or, for suitable renewable diesel, all petroleum diesel in the fuel. | Does the vehicle accept the specific fuel, and can it be obtained locally? |
| Home heating | Electricity, especially a heat pump | An electric system supplies heat instead of burning heating oil. | Can the building, climate, electrical service, and heating distribution system support the installation? |
| Home heating | Natural gas | A gas-fired system replaces the oil-fired system but still burns a fossil fuel. | Is gas service available, and does conversion make sense locally? |
| Home heating | Renewable heating oil or a biofuel blend | A liquid fuel can reduce petroleum use while retaining oil-heating equipment, subject to fuel and equipment compatibility. | Does the supplier offer it, and does the equipment manufacturer or installer confirm compatibility? |
What can replace gasoline or diesel in a car?
Electric vehicles
Battery-electric vehicles use electricity rather than gasoline or diesel for road travel. Their practicality depends on how far and how often the vehicle is driven, access to home or public charging, local electricity conditions, and vehicle and charging-infrastructure costs. Electricity is also used by some public transit systems, although that does not make it a direct replacement for every vehicle or route.

Ethanol is commonly mixed with gasoline rather than used as a complete substitute. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says most U.S. motor gasoline contains up to 10% ethanol by volume. That is partial petroleum displacement, not pure ethanol use; fuel availability and vehicle suitability depend on the blend and vehicle.

Biodiesel and renewable diesel
Biodiesel is generally blended with petroleum diesel. Renewable diesel is chemically equivalent to petroleum diesel and can be used as a drop-in fuel, according to the EIA’s biofuels explainer. That distinction does not guarantee that every fuel is available everywhere: check the fuel specification, supplier, and vehicle guidance before filling up.
Other transport fuels
Methanol, natural gas, propane, hydrogen, biofuels, and electricity appear in the EIA’s list of alternative fuels. They are a menu of technologies, not equally common choices for ordinary cars. EIA notes that natural-gas and propane use in transportation is concentrated in fleet applications, so vehicle and fueling infrastructure can be limiting factors.

The scale of the transition remains significant: petroleum products supplied about 89% of U.S. transportation energy in 2025, while biofuels supplied about 6%, according to EIA data. These are U.S. energy-use shares for 2025, not global figures.

Heat pumps and other electric heating
A heat pump can replace an oil-fired furnace or boiler if the building and installation are suitable. Rather than making heat by burning fuel, it uses electricity to move heat from the outdoor air or another source into the home. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says heat pumps typically provide three to five units of heat per unit of electricity input. Actual performance in a particular home depends on the equipment, climate, system design, and operating conditions.

Before choosing one, assess the home’s heat demand, insulation, existing radiators or ducts, electrical service, and local climate with a qualified installer. These factors affect whether the system can meet the home’s needs and what installation work is required. IEA analysis estimates that about half of residential fuel consumption could be electrified competitively; this is an estimate of potential, not a claim about current adoption or a forecast.
Natural gas
Where a home has access to natural-gas service, a gas furnace or boiler is another common replacement. It still burns a fossil fuel, and a conversion may require new equipment, piping, or other work. Service availability, conversion cost, local prices, and policy all affect whether it is a suitable choice. EIA reports that most new and replacement home heating systems use natural gas or electricity.

Renewable heating oil and biofuel blends
Some suppliers offer heating oil blended with biofuel; the EIA describes blends that are generally about 5% biofuel by volume. Renewable heating oil is similar to renewable diesel and meets ASTM D396, the specification for heating oil. These options can reduce petroleum use without necessarily replacing the liquid-fuel system, but do not assume that every supplier carries them or that every furnace or boiler accepts every blend. Confirm the exact fuel and equipment requirements with the supplier and equipment manufacturer or installer.
Other renewable heat pathways
A 2021 report from the IEA, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) identifies renewable electricity, renewable-based gases such as green hydrogen, sustainable bioenergy, direct solar heat, and geothermal heat as possible routes to renewable heating. These differ in infrastructure and building requirements; they are not interchangeable, equally available, or practical for every home.

Oil heating is geographically concentrated in the United States. EIA estimates that about 4.79 million U.S. households used heating oil as their primary heating fuel in winter 2023–2024, with about 82% of those households in the Northeast. The figures describe U.S. households and that winter, not worldwide heating patterns.

For a vehicle
- Match the technology to the duty cycle: Consider daily distance, long trips, loads, and how reliably the vehicle can be refueled or charged.
- Check access and compatibility: Compare charging availability with local access to the exact liquid fuel or blend the vehicle can use.
- Compare costs in your location: Vehicle, charging or fueling infrastructure, and local electricity and fuel prices all matter.
- Consider the energy source: The emissions and costs of electricity or biofuel depend partly on how and where it is produced.
For a home
- Start with the building: Heat demand, insulation, climate, and existing ducts, radiators, or other distribution equipment shape what a heating system can deliver.
- Check infrastructure: An electric system depends on electrical capacity; a gas conversion depends on gas service; liquid renewable fuels depend on local suppliers and equipment compatibility.
- Compare installed and running costs: Include required upgrades, seasonal performance, and local energy prices rather than judging by equipment type alone.
- Ask for a site-specific assessment: A qualified installer can evaluate the building and equipment. No single option is established as the cheapest or lowest-emissions choice everywhere.
IEA analysis also estimates that about half of oil-based road transport could be electrified competitively. As with its residential estimate, this describes competitive potential, not current market share or a prediction of adoption.
