Then check that each alert is active and that your app is configured to deliver notifications. The exact menus—and whether alerts follow changes to a whole list—depend on the service.
1. Decide what your watchlist is for
A watchlist is an organizing tool for securities you want to monitor; it is not an order or a recommended portfolio. Give the list a useful name, such as “Research next” or “Near my review price,” and keep it small enough to review regularly. If your app supports notes, record why each security is on the list so you can revisit that reason later.

For example, Fidelity supports a note of up to 100 characters per symbol. Apple Stocks lets you create multiple named lists and sort their contents. These are provider-specific features, not requirements for every watchlist.
2. Search for and add the right security
- Open your watchlist area. Choose an existing list or create and name a new one.
- Search by company name or ticker. Depending on the app, you may also be able to search for funds or indexes.
- Check the result before adding it. Confirm the displayed company and security details, not just the symbol. Tickers can be ambiguous across exchanges or share classes, and there is no universal disambiguation procedure across apps.
- Add the confirmed result to the list, then check that it appears there.
Apple’s iPhone guide documents search by ticker, company, fund, or index. Fidelity describes adding securities from quote pages, search results, and recently viewed stocks. Apple also lets users sort or manually reorder symbols and choose to display price change, percentage change, or market capitalization.

3. Choose an alert condition and value
For each security, decide what change should prompt you to check in. Common examples are “rises above” a price or “falls below” a price. Enter a value that is meaningful for your own monitoring; an alert threshold is not, by itself, a buy or sell recommendation.
Some services offer more than price crossings. Fidelity documents price tripwires, percentage-change triggers, and moving-average triggers. In Schwab Mobile, the documented flow asks you to choose a target-price type and direction before entering the target. Available conditions vary by provider.

4. Save the alert and verify its status
- Open the security from its quote page or your watchlist, then choose the app’s alert option.
- Select the condition and direction—for example, crossing above or below a target—and enter the value.
- Save the alert. Complete any required delivery setup, such as enabling a device or choosing push or email notifications.
- Return to the alert-management screen. Confirm the correct security, condition, value, and enabled or active status are shown.
- Review notification settings in both the service and your device if you expect push notifications.
Fidelity says at least one alert delivery device must be defined for its described watchlist triggers. Schwab Mobile has a Stock Alerts area for reviewing and editing open alerts. FYERS says users can view, edit, enable or disable, and delete alerts in its Alerts area. These controls and delivery options are service-specific. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish a general delivery-time guarantee.
5. Know whether alerts apply to one stock or a whole list
Do not assume that one alert automatically covers every symbol in a watchlist. In TradingView’s documented watchlist-alert feature, the alert operates independently for each symbol, remains active until it has triggered for all symbols, and updates as symbols are added to or removed from the list. Other services may require you to create an alert for each security, so check the behavior in your chosen app.

Review the list when your reason for tracking changes
Remove a security when you no longer need to monitor it, update its note if your reason changes, or revise an alert threshold when it no longer serves its purpose. Before relying on a list-wide alert, check what happens when you add or remove symbols; TradingView documents that behavior for its own watchlist alerts, but it should not be presumed for other services.
Watchlists and alerts can also have separate syncing rules. For example, Apple documents watchlist availability across Apple devices under the same Apple Account when Stocks is enabled in iCloud, while Schwab says its Mobile alerts do not sync with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. Check the chosen service’s current instructions for its own devices and products.
