If controls feel delayed in a Nintendo Switch platformer, first check whether it happens only in TV Mode: the television may be adding processing delay. If the problem is intermittent, check wireless conditions and test the controller outside the game. Online lag is a separate network problem. Work through these free checks before considering a repair or replacement.
1. Check whether the delay happens only in TV Mode
If the same controller feels responsive in handheld mode but delayed on a television, the TV’s image processing is a likely place to start. Nintendo explains that a television processes the console’s signal before displaying the picture and audio, which can make controls feel delayed without indicating a console defect. Nintendo recommends checking the TV manual for Game Mode or a similar setting that shortens processing time. The feature name and setup differ by television model. - Open the television’s picture or input settings and look for Game Mode, Gaming Mode, or a similar low-processing option. The exact menu path depends on the TV.
- Enable that mode for the input used by the Switch, then try the same game section again.
- If your TV does not offer such a mode, consult its manual for settings that reduce image processing.
A steady delay in what you see is different from missed or intermittent button presses. If the issue also happens in handheld mode, continue with the controller checks below.
2. If inputs are intermittent, improve the wireless setup
For Joy-Con or another wireless controller that sometimes fails to respond, charge it and check its position relative to the console before changing hardware. Nintendo advises keeping the console in the open and reducing distance between it and the controller. Avoid placing the console behind a television, under or against metal, or near many wires. Nintendo also recommends keeping it three to four feet away from wireless devices that could interfere, including wireless speakers, cordless phones, microwaves, laptops or tablets, printers, headsets, and USB 3.0 devices. #1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
- Charge the controller, then test again.
- Move closer to the console and make sure it is not hidden behind the TV or obstructed by metal.
- Move nearby wireless devices and USB 3.0 equipment farther away where practical.
Change one thing at a time and replay the same section so you can tell whether the symptom changes.
3. Test whether the problem follows the controller
Use the Switch’s built-in input test, then try the controller in another compatible game. On the console, go to System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Test Input Devices. If a button does not register there, the issue is not limited to the platformer’s controls. Nintendo says service may be appropriate when a button test fails or symptoms seriously affect play. If the test works but only one game is affected, check that game’s controller compatibility and in-game control settings. Nintendo Support: test input devices

- Test fails: Consider Nintendo service support rather than assuming a new controller is the only solution.
- Test passes, several games affected: Recheck wireless conditions if using a wireless controller, then seek support if the problem persists.
- Test passes, one game affected: Check the game’s compatibility information and settings.
4. Optional: test a Pro Controller over USB in TV Mode
A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be connected to the dock with a USB charging cable. Then enable System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Pro Controller Wired Communication. Nintendo requires system version 3.0.0 or later for this setup. NFC cannot be used while the cable is connected, and these instructions do not apply to Switch Lite. This is an optional way to use or diagnose the Pro Controller connection in TV Mode, not a guaranteed latency improvement. It is most useful as a test when wireless response is suspect.

5. Treat online lag as a network issue
If other players or characters jump around or respond slowly during online play, network transmission delay may be involved. That symptom is not necessarily local button-to-screen delay. Nintendo lists slow internet speeds, weak wireless signal, interference, and slow network devices as possible causes, and recommends testing after each change. Nintendo Support: online play connection troubleshooting
Improve the internet connection or wireless signal and test online play again. A wired internet connection can address the network path, but it will not fix delay caused by the television processing the Switch’s local video output.
