What Can Nuclear Microreactors Actually Do for Energy Infrastructure?

Microreactors could bring electricity and useful heat closer to remote or critical loads, but U.S. tests and licensing milestones are not proof of a mature commercial fleet.

Nuclear microreactors could bring steady electricity and useful heat closer to remote communities, industrial sites and other loads where resilience, transportability or energy security matters. They are not a proven plug-in replacement for large power stations: designs vary, and U.S. demonstration and licensing milestones do not yet amount to a commercial fleet with established costs.

What is a nuclear microreactor?

A microreactor is a small nuclear reactor concept intended to be factory-built, transportable and capable of self-adjusting operation. The term does not specify one fuel or coolant, so two designs described as microreactors may differ substantially in how they work and what infrastructure they need.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said in a 2021 explainer that many designs would produce 1–20 megawatts thermal (MWth). That is heat output, not a universal range for electricity generation. Some heat could be used directly; electricity requires conversion, and the resulting electric output depends on the design. DOE’s range is not a guaranteed specification for every project.

Where could microreactors fit?

Remote and resilience-critical power

A transportable reactor could be relevant where connecting to a large grid is difficult, or where a site wants a steady local source for essential loads. DOE identifies remote commercial and residential locations, military bases, rural communities, mining and industrial operations, and disaster relief as potential applications. These are prospective uses, not evidence that microreactors are already supplying those customers at scale.

DOE’s 2025 Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Advanced Nuclear notes that some remote applications rely on diesel generators, with costs approaching up to approximately $600 per megawatt-hour (MWh). This is DOE’s contextual characterization of some diesel-dependent remote use cases—not a price for every diesel system or a demonstrated cost advantage for any microreactor.

Microgrids and local energy systems

A microreactor could be one part of a microgrid, alongside renewables and other resources. Depending on the design and operating arrangement, local generation might support an islanded system or serve loads while connected to a wider grid. The practical value would depend on how the reactor’s output matches demand, how it coordinates with the other resources, and what connection the site can build and operate.

Useful heat, not just electricity

Where a nearby customer needs heat, direct thermal use could avoid converting all reactor output into electricity first. DOE lists district heating, water desalination and hydrogen production among possible applications, as well as industrial heat uses. Whether a particular site can use that heat depends on its process, temperature needs, location and connection to the reactor; a broad list of possible uses does not establish a working commercial installation.

What could change in energy infrastructure?

If factory fabrication and transportability work as intended, some projects might rely less on large-scale construction at the final site and place generation nearer to the load. That could alter planning for isolated facilities or local energy networks. It is a potential consequence of the design goals, not a measured result from a mature fleet.

The infrastructure challenge would shift rather than disappear. A project would still need a suitable site, a licensed design and operating plan, transport arrangements, trained staff, security and emergency provisions, a fuel strategy, and a customer able to use its electricity or heat. Depending on the application, it would also need a grid interconnection or a process-heat connection. Those factors determine whether a compact reactor solves a real supply problem better than other options.

Are microreactors licensed and operating in the United States?

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) says it is prepared to license microreactors using existing licensing pathways. It has also proposed Part 57, a flexible, risk-informed framework intended for microreactors and designs with comparable risk. A proposed rule is not a final rule, and neither regulatory readiness nor a project application is an issued license.

The NRC’s Part 57 proposal discusses several possible approaches that could matter for repeat deployments, including high-volume licensing of standardized designs across sites, manufacturing licenses, multiple licensing pathways, transport of fueled reactors and upfront decommissioning plans. These are proposed provisions, not authorizations already available to developers.

NRC materials also identify topics that require regulatory attention, including staffing and oversight, security, emergency preparedness, risk methods, decommissioning funding, fueled-reactor transportation and siting. The exact requirements depend on the design and deployment; compact size alone does not remove those obligations.

What do recent U.S. milestones show?

DOME: a test bed, not a power plant

In April 2026, DOE reported that construction of the Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) test bed at Idaho National Laboratory was complete and the facility was ready to host a first fueled microreactor test campaign. DOE describes it as a site for experimental testing and performance data that can inform future commercial licensing applications. The facility is 100 feet high and 80 feet in diameter; those are DOME’s dimensions, not the size of a microreactor.

University application: a review milestone

The NRC’s 2026 highlights report that the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign submitted a construction permit application on March 31, 2026, for a proposed KRONOS-based high-temperature gas-cooled research microreactor. The NRC page reported that its acceptance review was ongoing. An application under review is not a construction permit grant or an operating approval.

Two designs, two different kinds of figures

DOE’s MARVEL project is a research microreactor using sodium-potassium coolant, designed for 85 kilowatts thermal (kWth) and approximately 10 kilowatts electric (kWe). Those separate ratings illustrate why heat and electricity figures should not be treated as interchangeable; MARVEL is not a commercial-system benchmark.

The NRC’s pre-application page describes Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery as a proposed 1-megawatt-electric (MWe) gas-cooled microreactor for remote, distributed or behind-the-meter applications. The design description specifies standard low-enriched uranium dioxide fuel and an actively cooled helium loop. Pre-application engagement is not approval, licensing or evidence of an operating deployment.

How to assess a microreactor proposal

A headline capacity figure is not enough to judge whether a project can serve a particular site. Compare the proposal against the actual load and infrastructure needs:

  • Output and demand: distinguish electric output from thermal output, then check whether the output profile fits the site’s demand.
  • Operating arrangement: establish whether the project is grid-connected, behind the meter or intended to operate as an islanded microgrid.
  • Site and delivery: examine transportability, site conditions and what construction or supporting infrastructure is still required.
  • Licensing maturity: separate a concept or pre-application discussion from an application, a permit and an operating authorization.
  • Operations and safety: understand staffing, oversight, security and emergency arrangements for the specific site.
  • Fuel and lifecycle: clarify fuel supply and refueling assumptions, decommissioning obligations, delivery schedule and full lifecycle cost.
  • System integration: determine how the reactor would work with renewables, storage, grid services or a process-heat customer.

The DOE and NRC material described here does not establish comparable project-level costs, delivery schedules or performance data for ranking microreactors against one another or against other energy sources. In particular, the remote diesel figure is not a like-for-like comparison with a named reactor proposal.
