To give a proposal for standalone PFA/PFB font support a useful review, make its scope, parsing behavior, tests, and fit with OpenType.js explicit. No preparation can guarantee a merge: the available sources do not establish the current status or quality of pull request #871.
What OpenType.js supports—and what that does not imply
OpenType.js describes itself as a JavaScript library for reading and writing OpenType fonts. Its README lists WOFF, OTF, and TTF support, including TrueType glyf and PostScript cff outlines (project README). That CFF support concerns outlines inside OpenType files; it does not establish support for standalone PostScript Type 1 files in PFA or PFB form.

That distinction matters in a pull request: describe the proposed input formats and intended use directly instead of presenting existing CFF support as proof that standalone Type 1 parsing is already within the library’s supported scope.
Check the project’s scope before asking for approval
In historical issue #643, a user asked about incomplete font parsing and Type 1 support. A maintainer distinguished CFF Type 1 that could load through existing CFF support from standalone PostScript fonts, which raised a separate scope question. The discussion also mentioned plugins as a possible way to make parsing extensible. It is useful context, not a statement of current project policy (issue #643).
#1 Best Overall
Ask maintainers whether standalone Type 1 belongs in the core library or whether an extension point would be a better fit. Getting that architectural question answered early can prevent reviewers from spending time on implementation details before agreeing on the feature’s place in the project.
Make the review request concrete
OpenType.js documents a contribution path: fork and clone the repository, install dependencies, make changes, and open a pull request. Its README also describes development, build, and test commands; follow the current instructions there rather than assuming commands from an old checkout still apply (project README). These steps explain how to contribute, not how quickly a pull request will be reviewed or whether it will be accepted.
In the pull request description, give reviewers a short architecture overview and separate the work into verifiable questions. Identify the smallest useful entry points—format detection, parsing, conversion into the library’s font and glyph representation, and tests—so reviewers can navigate a larger change without guessing where each behavior lives.

- Detection: Explain how the parser distinguishes PFA and PFB inputs from formats already handled by the library.
- Representation: Show how parsed font data and glyphs map to OpenType.js structures.
- Failure behavior: Say what happens with unsupported, malformed, or truncated input, including whether the parser returns a clear error or deliberately skips a case.
- Provenance: Identify borrowed code and its license and origin so maintainers can review compatibility and attribution.
Test the format-specific risks
PFA and PFB need separate test coverage because their input structures differ. FreeType’s Type 1 parser is a useful technical reference for concerns such as PFB segment tags and sizes, PFA text input, locating the eexec marker, and reading private-dictionary data. Its implementation illustrates parsing hazards; it does not show that any particular JavaScript pull request handles them correctly (FreeType Type 1 parser source).

- Used Book in Good Condition
Include small, reproducible fixtures and tests that let reviewers check behavior rather than infer it from the implementation:
- Valid PFA and PFB files, with expected parsing results.
- Truncated or malformed data, including invalid or incomplete PFB segments and boundaries.
- PFA processing around the
eexecmarker and private-dictionary data. - Supported and unsupported Type 1 features, with expected outcomes for each.
- Regression coverage showing that existing font parsing continues to work.
These are review recommendations based on the documented workflow and known parser concerns, not assertions about the tests or behavior in PR #871.

What is known about PR #871
A contributor-authored DEV article describes a PFA/PFB support pull request, and a social search result points to PR #871. The official pull request page was not available in the sources reviewed here, so its present status, diff, checks, review comments, and merge decision are unverified. Do not assume it is open, approved, blocked, merged, or technically correct; check the official GitHub page before relying on any status claim (DEV article; social post).
