In Fluvio, these modules—called SmartModules—can run at different pipeline stages and be chained so one module’s output becomes the next module’s input. The practical questions are where the transform runs, what operations it supports, and whether its development model fits the job.
What a WASM transform does in a stream
A stream transform changes or filters records as they move through a data pipeline. Fluvio describes SmartModules as user-defined functions compiled to WebAssembly and used to transform streaming data (Fluvio Transformations, updated July 9, 2025). A simple example is mapping a JSON record into a different shape, or filtering out records that do not meet a condition.

WASM is the module format in this design, not a guarantee that every streaming system supports the same operators, languages, or deployment model. Fluvio’s implementation is one concrete example of using compiled modules for record transformations.
Where the transform runs
Fluvio documents two execution locations with different resource and data-flow implications:

- Producer-side: The transform runs in the producer process before the record is sent to the topic. The producer’s environment performs the computation, and the transformed data is what gets published.
- Consumer-side: The transform runs on the SPU before data is sent to consumers. This places the computation on the platform side rather than in each consumer process.
Choose placement based on which stage should see transformed data and where the computation belongs in your architecture. The documentation does not establish a universal rule that one location is better for every workload.
How chained modules process a record
A chain runs modules sequentially: the output of one becomes the input of the next. For example, a chain could reshape JSON first and then apply a regex filter. Reversing the order can change the result, because the second module receives the first module’s output, not the original record. Before composing modules, check that each output has the schema and data form expected by the following module, and decide how invalid records or transform errors should be handled. The documentation demonstrates ordering and examples but does not prescribe a complete production validation policy.

Fluvio’s documentation covers SmartModules in producers, consumers, connectors, CLI use, and YAML-based transform chains. A quickstart workflow includes downloading a module, applying it to a producer or consumer, and declaring multiple transformations in YAML; connector configuration is also documented (SmartModules Quickstart, updated July 9, 2025). The exact configuration surface depends on which integration point you use, so follow the relevant producer, consumer, or connector instructions rather than assuming one setting applies everywhere.

What custom SmartModule development involves
For custom modules, Fluvio documents the SmartModule Development Kit (SMDK) and a Rust-based workflow that compiles to WebAssembly. Its developer overview says SMDK is currently limited to Rust (Building Your Own SmartModule, updated July 9, 2025). That is a meaningful constraint if your team expects to write and maintain transform code in another language.

- Execution placement: Determine whether logic should run in the producer, on the platform, or in the consumer.
- Operator needs: Establish whether record-at-a-time mapping and filtering are enough, or whether the task needs broader operations such as windows, joins, enrichment, or aggregation.
- State: Decide whether each record can be handled independently or whether the computation must retain state across records or time.
- Development and deployment: Check supported languages, compilation, SDKs, testing, module distribution, configuration, versioning, and rollout practices.
- Composition: Confirm how modules are ordered and parameterized, and how downstream modules handle earlier outputs.
These are also useful axes when comparing approaches. Apache Flink describes applications over bounded and unbounded inputs, including transformations, windowing, event enrichment, and stateful applications (Apache Flink Applications). Kafka Streams documents processor topologies and operations such as map, filter, joins, and aggregations (Kafka Streams Core Concepts). These platforms provide context for comparing capabilities, but the cited documentation does not supply directly comparable WASM performance measurements or establish a universal performance winner.
