NCO, short for netCDF Operators, is a suite of command-line tools for inspecting, transforming and analysing scientific data stored in netCDF-accessible formats. You run a focused operator such as ncks or ncra with input and output files, then combine commands in a shell script when you need a repeatable workflow.
What NCO does
NCO is a collection of standalone shell programs, not a graphical data-analysis application. Each operator takes netCDF input, performs a task and can write a processed file. The official guide describes examples such as averaging, hyperslabbing (selecting a subset of data) and renaming; the suite also supports deriving data, calculating statistics, printing data and editing metadata. See the NCO User Guide and the NCO project repository.

That makes NCO useful when you want to carry out a well-defined operation on scientific array data from the shell, either interactively or as part of a scripted pipeline. Climate-model processing is a familiar use case, but the guide presents NCO as general-purpose software for netCDF data rather than a climate-only tool. The project homepage gives an overview of its scope.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, someone asking how to turn hourly air-temperature data into daily means needs to establish which dimension represents time, how records are arranged, and whether the desired mean should be weighted. The relevant NCO averaging operator and its options depend on those details; the operator name alone is not a complete recipe. Follow the current guide’s syntax and caveats before applying a command to important data.
What formats can NCO handle?
The project describes NCO as working with netCDF-accessible formats that include DAP, HDF4, HDF5 and Zarr. That is a project-level capability description, not a promise that every build and operator handles every format in the same way. The User Guide says netCDF is required, explains that a netCDF4-enabled NCO can handle netCDF3 and netCDF4/HDF5 data, and notes that HDF4 support depends on linking against a netCDF library built with HDF4 support. It also describes format behavior and exceptions across operators. Consult the format and operator notes in the guide for the relevant case.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not infer compatibility from a file extension alone. Check the installed NCO and netCDF versions, the features of the linked libraries, and the documentation for the operator you plan to use. Output format can depend on the input and the operator.

- Define the transformation. Decide whether you need to subset variables or dimensions, aggregate records, derive a field, combine or compare files, or adjust metadata.
- Check your setup. Confirm that netCDF is installed and identify your NCO version and build features. Instructions may differ across environments.
- Find the matching operator. Use the current guide to check its syntax, supported inputs and behavior for the dimensions and variables in your files.
- Specify inputs and output deliberately. Supply the required files and options, and ensure the output path and format are appropriate for the next stage of your workflow.
- Validate the result. Inspect the processed file and its metadata, and verify that the selection or calculation reflects the intended scientific operation before using it downstream.
This sequence keeps the key decisions visible: the data layout, the operation, the build’s format support and the output you intend to use. For repeated work, NCO’s one-command-per-operator model can be incorporated into shell scripts.

Which guide version should you follow?
The official User Guide documents NCO 5.4.1 and says it was last updated on 2 October 2026. That describes the guide’s version and update date; it is not an independent installation or execution test. If your installed release differs, use documentation that matches your setup and check the current guide for operator details.
